Victor/Victoria 5q5e5f 1982 - ★★★★★ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/abtony_box/film/victor-victoria/ letterboxd-review-910232100 Sun, 8 Jun 2025 19:05:50 +1200 2025-06-07 No Victor/Victoria 1982 5.0 12614 <![CDATA[

Quite gay. Fun with an edge replaced with honesty. The gays star in the setting of the film, even if a straight romance ultimately drives the main narrative. However, as the confusion goes with the charade of Victoria, the ultimate perception of the narrative, based on the fictional character's knowledge, is a gay romance between a gangster and a showman.

In the beginning, we are presented with the shameless Todd, who is accepted in full, until petty humor causes a stir, flipping the nightclub upside down. Played rather convincingly by the late Robert Preston, he frequently makes sure we know of his sexuality, so we do not forget, while also adding humor, such as with his opening “Paris” show tune or joking with the partner of King Marchard, Norma Cassidy. If it were to come out, no pun intended, in today’s age, it could be seen as redundant, but for the 80s, it was a nice squirm bait for one opposed to the humor.

Norma, played by Lesley Ann Warren, while still providing luxury and beauty, served as a campy caricature of a hypersexual mistress, providing goofy humor throughout, “Close the door.” Mr. Bernstein, being in the dark about what the audience eventually knows about Victoria and King Marchard’s relationship, adds to the various angles of comedy that the film provides.

Through the humor, there is also social critique, mainly coming from Victoria: The double standards between the sexes, as well as her newfound autonomy while living the life as a man, even in the social taboos of being gay.

King Marchard does not shy away from being blunt about caring about perception, even though he has the exact person that he wants. There is a bit of seriousness in his questioning his masculinity in his newfound love, even through the lens of satire.

I love that this campy film pulls from every angle of comedy, from over-the-top slapstick scenes to subtle nuance and dry humor.

A film to laugh together, and also raise a congregational hand in amen at its social critique. It was needed when it was released, and it's needed now for a release. With love and pride, thank you to Julie Andrews, Robert Preston, Blake Edwards, and the rest of the writers and cast, “Oh, how I love this crazy world.”

There were a few highlights for me. The pauses in conversation between Julian and Michelle created great sexual tension in their first meeting. I felt this moment got diluted a little too quickly with her ultimately being rejected in this particular moment, and later pleading in desperation. It would have been nice to bask in it a little more. Richard Gere (Julian) was in peak shape and dapper attire throughout. Lauren Hutton (Michelle) is presented on the screen with high-class elegance while practicing her French, but we gradually grow accustomed to her down-to-earth appeal and longing for love. The high-end escort life did not initially appeal to me, but it was later stripped down as a facade of the perceived solidity. The peak of this part of the narrative was his final conversations with both Annie and Leon. I was captivated by Bill Duke's domineering lines while speaking in a hushed tone.

I’d also like to mention the unwavering smugness of Sunday, played well by the pleasant sighting of a younger Héctor Elizondo.

An emotionally tugging moment was how tenderly Julian says “Don’t go” to Michelle before being taken away back to his cell, another scene I would have liked to bask in a while longer.

A specific shot sequence that felt futuristic was when Julian was being chased by a worker of Charles Stratton. The full-body powershot chase felt like the film jumped a couple of decades for a brief moment.

I give grace to 80s charm as far as the narrative jumping around, and an enhancement in regards to the soundtrack. The LA scenery was beautiful from the beachouse, apartment, streets, etc. However, for the nearly two-hour run time, along with the buildup, the ending felt rushed.

An 80s timestamp carried by the star power of Richard Gere.

The closing scene alone got a second watch out of me. I was looking for a slow film watch and this one definitely fit the criteria. It felt a bit longer than its just over an hour and a half run-time. The post-climax felt like a cool down toward the conclusion opposed to a daunting finish. My second watch felt more encapsulating than my first watch, where I was questioning if I was understanding what I was watching. Beau Travail is stamped in my mind as an example of a hyper-masculine character critiquing a portion of his life in which it got the better of him, part in self-pity, and another part in what you would seek to hear if you fell victim to it. It tried to think of another film in which a hyper-masculine character self-critiqued in such a way, especially in a way that felt like such a short period between the ultimate fall and the self-reflection, and I couldn’t.

The shots are much of the story, and I wouldn’t give any pushback to those who say they are the story. I loved the wide shots along with their relationship with the enclosed shots of the soldiers. We were overseeing them as the narrator, and likewise right there with them. The pictures dismissed of dialogue feel like we are getting a montage of his solace and what he misses. Though the dialogue is poetic, “Now all that is no more. Those mountains and deserts are just things, information stocked in my memory.” The beginning quote about being “Unfit for life. Unfit for civil life” gives off a statement of reproach for his actions, and a lament for the position he is now in.

The slow movement without large peaks creates a narrative of acceptance of failure and a reminiscence of beauty, which seems to be solidified in the conclusion. War films are not toward the top of my genre list, but this particular film transcends that in the guise of cinema.

This felt pleasantly unique. It felt natural and documented rather than overly dramatized with emphasis. We see things through makeup, facial expressions, and second-hand conversations, rather than being explicitly told or beaten down with over-dramatization. An early example is the state of Omar’s father. He is unwell, and he is being cared for by Omar, however, we do not know until later, through his brother’s joking with friends, that it is in part due to his alcoholism and from career and family woes. Another is the physical relationship between Omar and Johnny. Tania’s facial expressions, much like her mother’s in seeing her pursuits of Omar, show that she sees there is more than a regular friendship going on between Omar and Johnny.

Omar and Johnny’s relationship is a prominent part of the film, but their sexuality serves as a nuance of a particular conflict rather than being a source. This, within itself, is unique, especially for an '80s film. The main sources of conflict are politics, prejudice, and underground crime. In a pool of taboo relationships, Omar’s Uncle Nasser and Rachel, his cousin Tani, as well as the family’s taboo earnings through organized crime, Omar and Johnny’s sexuality takes a backseat.

Overall, it's an interesting film with a lot of warmth and enough drama to keep you leaning forward, anticipating the results. It’s worth another watch for me. It’s an intriguing drama, also stocked in the gay-film file of non-tragedies.

My score is primarily based on how beautifully shot the film was. The highlights for me were the intimate shots of Robert speaking with his mother and Ivar. More specifically, when Robert goes to help Ivar with his wardrobe and performance, it peaks for me when they retrieve Ivar’s clothes and take photos. I could also feel the gloominess and tediousness of the factory through the screen. There was plenty of cool outdoor scenery to open things up from the factory. The shots coincided fluidly with the emotion being portrayed in each scene.

It falls off with untouched elephants in the storyline. Ivar being black and queer having a father who is an opressor to his working class colleages as well as Ivar himself. How and why did this dynamic come about? His perceived privilege, vocalized by his colleagues, feels like an oxymoron based on what we later realize he deals with at home.

I was intrigued by Robert’s storyline, which isn’t a unicorn, but has been a more recent narrative being shown more in queer films. He is someone who is out to his specific tribe with little reserve and comfort, but closeted to the outside. He expresses his shame for not taking a stand, as he can clearly escape with how people perceive him at work, and how he is perceived by his mother. It coincides with the external conflict he has with his job vs the union. It’s not a simple storyline of self-hate. It focuses on intense self-preservation. I think the ambitions of the topics the writer wanted to cover are ultimately what create the film's flaws.

While trying to cover a lot, it seems to ignore a lot. However, Robert is a beautiful and flawed character to follow. It is easy to empathize and sympathize with his character. His choices are hard to make, and even when they are selfish, they don’t come with malicious intent. The film and Robert can be seen as one in the same, flawed, but the beauty is still apparent.

I finally got a chance to watch this Spike Lee t on the big screen, and it was such a surreal experience. I catching it numerous times in my youth in pieces via BET. I can’t pinpoint a date I watched it in full, but I went on a Spike Lee binge a few years ago. Long story short, I vividly recalled each scene, which is more about the impressive writing and directing, as opposed to my memory, which I’m sure none of you care about.

My favorite part about Spike Lee films is how well-rounded he depicts Black Culture. Whether for or against his practices, culturally, we picture Malcolm X as a serious man. In this film see his laughter, we see his joy, his anger, his love, his lust, his courage, and vulnerability. We are given a coming-of-age story. We see contrasting expressions and nuances of these emotions. The frustration Denzel has at the table playing Russian Roulette changes to a controlled frustration in trying to get medical attention for a fellow black citizen being denied treatment while being held at a precinct. More closely, we see it resemble how it was early in the film when arguing with his wife (Angela Bassett), or smashing his hand on his desk.

At each stage of his life, we also see dynamics in the world around him. I mean, having an incredible dance number in a film like this, and pulling it off without stripping it of its seriousness is “chef’s kiss.”

A great ing cast mimics this same idea. Archie, played by Delroy Lindo, adds to his brilliance, also showcasing this in Sinners, is confident and sure of himself, while later being broken down and inferior. Angela Bassett is an abiding woman of the Muslim community, but that does not stop her from shameless pursuit of Malcolm, not giving up her power by giving in to the idea of sharing her age and height to be his match. Baines introduces Malcolm to his enlightenment, and is later suggested as a main culprit in his demise by becoming the thing he despised in the old Malcolm.

The most vivid moment, as I type right now, is the closing scenes of Malcolm before his death. The famous Spike powershot of Malcolm being in a daze, facing the inevitable. Here, the “power” is vulnerability. I felt an eerie and down-to-earth sympathy. An unspoken moment of any kind where you have to face something and have completely let go to fate, not in a sense of giving up, but rather in acceptance.

It’s hard to watch this film, especially on the big screen, and not think it's the greatest film I have ever seen. It is certainly Spike Lee’s Magnum Opus, as it would be for any other filmmaker if they were able to make it. It’s a heavy topic, and as important today as it was yesterday. As long as the film is, and emotional, it's something I will still have to come back to in the future, hopefully with less relevance.

Cheers to my favorite director 🍻

I appreciated the film focusing on the grand effect of oppression and racism rather than the grand acts. The mistress was generally a spoiled person, as you could see her aggression toward her husband, drinking, and her lack of affection toward her kids by casting them away outside with Diouana. A highlighting contrast to this was the acts of her husband, such as him checking on Diouana and being the one to take the boy to bed, which go against the stereotypical gender roles. There were various microaggressions. An overt one to pinpoint is the first guest dinner when a man who had “never kissed a black woman” before took it upon himself to make an introduction in a dehumanizing way to Diouana.

The sub-theme of simply wanting more out of life, outside of what is given to us, made Diouana relatable beyond the main theme of race-related oppression. The pain and regret of things not being as they seemed, yet not wanting to go back to the way things were, provides an ultimate dilemma and tragedy.

A stapled aspect throughout was the communication barrier and lack of communication.
There was never a clear discussion from the mistress to Diouana on her daily tasks. I see this written with intent through Diouana’s dialogue of expecting to only be focused on the children. The mistress expresses her orders as they pop into her mind, starting at the first dinner or lunch party. She yells at her husband about Diouna, and later Diouana herself, without any formal discussion or boundaries.

Though more level-headed, the monsieur has a character of entitlement, seemingly blind. He opens Diouana’s letter, and though he reads it with her permission, it's still an odd thing to ask, with it being personal. Showing up unannounced in Dakar is an example of this as well. My favorite scene is the development of his detachment from the environment, eventually leading to him feeling the energy of being unwelcome.

The low-budget, indie-style camera work works well with a first-person narrated documentary-esque feel. It’s poetic in how it shows a grand impact on one’s person without giving a continuous montage of grand circumstances. The resolution sees two different cultures looking through two different lenses.

It fits its time while being modern in its handling of narrative.

This was a pleasant hit for my Saturday night movie crate dig. It has strong themes that mimic modern ideologies, such as independence versus conformity, male and female relationship dynamics, and the caste system.

Sybylla proclaims herself as ugly early on in the film, something unrefuted by those around her, such as family and friends. Throughout the narrative, the actual truth seems to be the lack of traditional elegance and what society expects of her. She is sought by two men who are respected in the social hierarchy. She has a natural charm that even the most critical finds amusing at times.

There is a beautifully written friendship between Sbylla and Harry after a shaky introduction. The trials come from the elder women in her life sharing either their story of disappointment or the possibilities of her romantic future. Aunt Gussie seems to be the most accepting of her among the women.

Conventionality is the breach between the simplicity of a beautiful relationship. The idea of belonging. The problem is that Syblla not only has ambition and a longing for self-discovery, but she also knows a life that is not for her.

I enjoyed the slowness and stillness of the film. It enhanced the moments of chaos and disagreement.

The most profound element is that of showing the loneliness and macro/micro pushback of self-discovery. In the latter, we see social expectations of adult male and female relationships cause a ripple in a joyful, platonic relationship.

A film that shows you can be quietly profound. Will watch again.

I love that they involved people directly in this Black horse riding culture. It was pleasant to learn about a community I did not know existed. Would definitely like to do more research, so I thank those involved with bringing this film to light. We see two themes of a chosen family through common interest and another of reconnection. One is much more unique than the other.

With what was given to work with of the writing, familiar favorites did not disappoint in the likes of Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, and a personal one of mine, Jharrel Jerome. A standout for me would be Method Man, as I feel he brought out the most charm in the film, ironically, as having antagonist characteristics. Paris, played by Jamil Prattis, brought a very humanistic and authentic emotional appeal throughout his screentime. Rome, Bryon Bowers, brought a lot of energy and comic relief that was much appreciated.

The storyline of choosing street life versus humble civilian life did not have much uniqueness, but I appreciated the humanity of Smush simply wanting peace. Even with it being muted by Cole’s story, I think it was a very strong message that likewise coincided with the horse-riding community fighting to keep their stable.

A charming film and modern Western echoing and listening to the voice of a Philadelphia community that deserves to be heard. I wouldn’t mind seeing even more about their community through the likes of film.

Beautiful Cinematography. I could watch it endlessly for its aesthetic alone. I appreciated the simplistic, clear divide of right and wrong, which also held moments a bit more complex.

In a film enthralled with various forms of masculinity, it was refreshing to see a woman in the ultimate power position for a significant portion of the storyline (especially in the 50s). Regarding masculinity, we even saw our humble protagonist still needing to prove something to himself while combating the brute mentality of his opposition. Furthermore, a need to act as a protector.

We have a slight progression from the simplistic storyline, with the antagonist character arc that seems to have been there all along.

The beautiful scenery and the shooting age very well. The only elements that aren’t so timeless for me are the writing of Ramón as an unintelligent minority in “The Big Country” and an attempt at assault by an outlaw being more ionate than the relationship of the main characters. Though I do it, for the 50s, there was a lot of kissing.

Overall, it is such a beautiful film to look at and will be on my short list of 2:40:00 plus films that get a second watch from me.

It satisfied my Western itch for the night.

As a Coleman Domingo fan, this has been on my list since I first saw his promotion. I truly was missing out. There’s a charm about this film. It felt organic yet fluid and structured. We are met with an opening theatre monologue with dream-like staging met with applause. It is short lived as it continues into the inmate's reality. This is a great use of time without explicitly showing us how it is rationed with the rest of their stay.

The character of Divine Eye is a wonderfully written embodiment of what the inmates are trying to escape as the Protagonist Divine G is a clear leader who embodies the rehabilitation and mental rest the group is trying to achieve. Instead of showing graphic chaos, we are given a controlled reality check with Divine Eye’s anger and paranoia. His pushback throughout the film feels natural as someone who is all too aware of their confines within the system.

It's emotional in a mostly cerebral way. It defies toxic masculinity while remaining masculine. We are shown the strength of vulnerability and how it allows them to keep their heads with what they are going through.

The situation is bleak, but the story and feel are consistently centered around warmth. Even the lowest moments of the plot still try to tug toward the arc of hope and deliverance.

My standout moment was when a former inmate came back to speak with the group. The way he touches on enjoying the simplicity of being free is touching and can put life and joy into perspective for any one from any walk of life.

I did not know what to expect going into it, but it is a film deserving of all the critical acclaim it has gotten and perhaps more.

While fatigued and watching with subtitles, the plot and storytelling still garnered my attention. The ultimate blend achieved is romance and tragedy. It is a multi-dimensional tragedy of relationships, worldview, and self. We’re drawn in by an uphill battle of two individuals trying to escape a world of homophobia and, more importantly, do so together.

The reasoning behind Martin’s incarceration doesn’t give a pull to empathy. He does accuse of a double standard of his crime as being further punished because of his sexuality. Even though the story seems to revolve around Martin, heaviness is placed on Thomas's shoulders.

Thomas is young and sure of himself and his wants. He fearlessly acts out his desires with naivety to the dangers that could fall upon him. However, Martin encourages him to face the ugliness rather than run away into bliss, which, unfortunately, becomes ironic.

This is one of those avant-garde films that often remind me that the plethora of insults for gay men are nothing new. Even more so with the dictatorial reformatory it depicts we sit along with these characters unable to escape its consistency.

With low-fidelity, the cinematography provides a warm hand throughout the bleak journey. The occasional crackle mixed with gentle voices provided a late-night, fireplace-type of feeling for me.

My main critique is that it feels like we are delving into the self-pity of Martin’s perspective while another character is catching the brunt of the problem. It is like we are watching Martin watching a movie.

An encouraged Gay History viewing. Though bleak, the black and white shots mixed with low-fidelity provide some cushioning.

I appreciated the realism significantly more than the surrealism in this film. Toward the end, particularly in chapter three and beyond, I felt like I was watching multiple ideas that weren’t as cohesive as the beginning and middle portions. I enjoyed the humor throughout, and even with heavy moments again in the beginning, it felt like a pretty light form of humor, particularly coming from Lee and Joe. A standout point in regards to the narrative was the character of Allerton. The ambiguity of his sexuality doesn’t seem to be a point of self-confusion written in a cliché manner. The confusion instead comes from Lee in trying to find others like himself. I perceived Allerton’s demeanor as holding back his thoughts on how he felt about Lee concerning his time spent with Lee.

I like how deeply immersed the narrative and shots were with the main characters. When the outside was introduced, it added to the humor, such as a woman jumping in her seat when Lee yells out, “homosexual.” It also added more emotional appeal to the poetic shots. A moment that stuck with me was the outdoor aerial shots during the love scene, perhaps the most intimate in the latter part of the film. It was as if the characters were getting privacy from the viewer from the back and forth shots.

Though it is not my particular style, toward the end, I can appreciate the film for what it is. I won’t judge the artistic choice of the teeth, but points for the Omar Apollo appearance.

Running on Empty 1tu1u 1988 - ★★★★★ (contains spoilers) https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/abtony_box/film/running-on-empty-1988/ letterboxd-review-845532828 Wed, 26 Mar 2025 02:41:57 +1300 2025-03-24 No Running on Empty 1988 5.0 18197 <![CDATA[

This review may contain spoilers.

I watched this right after “My Own Private Idaho " and enjoyed it with the same warmth and nostalgia (though bleak), thanks to the naturalistic '90s appeal (1988). And of course Mr. River himself. I also found myself on edge not from the narrative of being on the run, but rather the glimmer of hope in having a different life.

We are given a plot that humanizes flawed characters who were formerly anti-war demonstrators. The predicament that rears its head is two children strung along the charade of protecting their parents for an act they are not responsible for. Most of the weight has fallen on the oldest child, Danny, who is coming of age in his late teens and has dealt with being on the run since he was two.

We are not given a traditional, singular “Monster” antagonist to overcome. The most apparent throughout is the offscreen FBI they are trying to avoid. There are moments where the father, Arthur can appear as the bad guy with his narrow-minded and ironically dictatorial approach to family matters. But then we see the love he has for his family, and the occasions of his paranoia being validated.

The mother, Annie, who is just as responsible for their situation, shows the most guilt even though she continues to adhere to Arthur's control over their situation.

Mr. Phillips spots Danny’s talent right away, leading to a close-knit relationship with his daughter Lorna. There is the interesting paradox of Lorna's worldly view of questioning the bourgeois personality of her parents closely mimicking Danny’s father and Danny’s musical gift and appreciation creating a bond with her father.

Both fathers have their temperaments challenged, particularly by the women. Their reactions further shape the idea of the ambiguous obstacles being overcome by the main and ing characters.

Each character felt believable. I particularly loved the well-rounded performances of Arthur (Judd Hirsch), Annie (Christine Lahti), and Danny (River Phoenix). There’s confidence, assertiveness, timidity, and cowardice, and we get to see the contrast highlighted by their appearance in the same setting at different points in the film.

This isn’t like the typical “Parents just don’t understand” film. There was a natural flow depicting the duality of human selfishness and selflessness and how life’s disruptions can complicate the status quo. The situation is a bit sensational for what the majority will ever go through, but there is a relatability in the ideas of love, sacrifice, trying to figure out how to make it through life, and ideas we thought we had figured out being challenged.
