I dunno why but I expected this to be way more mawkish and kind of lecturing, so I was very pleasantly surprised by how odd it was. It's surreal and meta, and very funny in parts. I think it maybe got a bit less interesting as it went on, but only because the first act is so strong. Very original and enjoyable. Always cool when a Marvel actor does something weird and grimy like this.

Also am I the only one who doesn't think Adam Pearson is that great an actor?

Loved this. Very very funny and very sweet. Tim Key plays the ballance between irritating, endearing and heartbreaking so well that it's impossible not the be won over. The script is very sharp, the characters are all well written and well portrayed, and crucially, the music is really good. Ticks so many of my boxes.

And on that note, Carey Mulligan is in it, and she plays a folk singer, in case Inside Llewellyn Davis just wasn't enough for you.

It's no wonder that wire drop scene has been parodied to death, it's really that good. Really weird to watch this with the context of where the franchise would go, not least of all because it made me think about the fact that Ethan Hunt is a human man with a human mother.

This one did nothing for me. Flat and lifeless in the way so many of his films feel to me. Very much felt like it was made from lesser parts of his better films. Not very good. The script is so poor that the actors, some of whom are usually very dependable, just can't do anything with it. It doesn't look cheap though at least. Nice sets and location shooting. I think it's so funny how Guy Ritchie was once the bright shining future of British Cinema and now he's just this gun for hire with a little more style than average.

This has moments where it works, but overall I found it really uneven and a bit of a drag. The whole first hour is spent setting up the plot and going through the perfunctory beats of any "stuck in a time loop" movie, and then we finally actually get a scene of some character development and an actual relationship forming, only for it then to take a baffling detour, plus an out of place flashback and the whole thing just grinds to a halt again.

So much of the film revolves around the characters "figuring it out", but we never know exactly what they are trying to figure out, so it's hard to know when to feel like something is or is not being accomplished or even moved towards. Plus it's all a bit of a downer. I was never sure what it going for, tonally. The two leads are good in it, but I wish the film used them better.

This was a big movie for me when it first came out. It's been both interesting and frustrating to see the opinions on it shift and change over these last 16(!) years. Ironically, for a film that starts with the premise that the main character's entire personality stems from a misunderstanding of "The Graduate", a lot of people misunderstood this too.

I've had so many conversations with people who believe that Summer is a bitch who leads Tom on and that she is the villain of the piece, which I'm glad that even when watching it as a love lorn 21 year old, I never bought into. There's also the reading of it that says Tom is basically the prototypical incel. I don't agree with either point really because the answer is way more nuanced. Tom is definitely immature and probably a bit of a mysogonist, but the film exists to challenge his point of view and lead him to a place of growth and acceptance. Summer is completely honest with him the whole way through, she gives him every chance to back out - is it her responsibility to cut herself off from someone she can see if becoming infatuated with her? Does she keep it going for so long in the hope that maybe she'll eventually feel that thing that she is never sure of? In my opinion her only real wrongdoing was not telling him about her new partner before he comes to the party. But then we wouldn't get the best scene in the movie, would we?

Speaking of which, there are so many standout scenes. The Expectation/Reality of course, the dance number, the since meme worthy "I love the Smiths" scene, their final conversation in the park, Tom ing things as they really were for the first time - all great stuff. It's very cine-literate in it's production and direction, sharp and cleverly written with some real depth, and an all timer soundtrack. Watching it again made me realise how much these songs were on heavy rotation on my iPod back then. Perfect ending too 🍂

Maybe the best MCU Phase 5 film, and definitely in the top end of the post Endgame films. What a difference it makes to have a film that doesn't feel like it was cobbled together from reshoots, rewrites, and last minute CGI.

The cast all work really well together. It's funny thinking back to how much people were worried about why they chose this particular group of characters, but having seen the film, it makes perfect sense. Loved the villain and the way the central theme of the film tied into him and all the characters. It all feels very purposeful and thought out.

Also, as much as Florence Pugh is probably the defacto lead, it genuinely feels like an ensemble where everyone gets their part to play. Who would have guessed Ghost would get a decent second chance?

The Bucky motorcycle scene is obviously trying to be very cool - but I don't care, it was cool!

I always tend to enjoy American high school movies, probably because they were so rife when I was growing up and they have this mystique to them. They are so completely different from my school experience, and I have no way of knowing if they are actually accurate or not, so in my mind, this is what American schools are like. And they are such a great setting for hightened drama and comedy because they are full of insane teenagers. What this film does is throw the teachers in the mix and make them just as petty and immature as the kids. Everyone taking a Class Council election this seriously is such great fodder for comedy. It was really funny. Great cast of odd-ball characters.

I'm beginning to think I just started with all the worst Wes Anderson films. What stood out to me most about this is that it felt like it actually had some heart to it, and came from a character first perspective. Most Anderson films don't click with me because of how terse and dry they are, but this one felt warm and inviting. Plus, I love the commitment to having the cast dress like cartoon characters who always wear the same outfit. It also manages to have that signature Wes Anderson style without feeling overly stagey and artificial like so many of his do. Coogler has managed this incredible task of making a film that is at once rich in character, deep in it's themes and ideas, technically wonderful in of music and visuals, and also a thrillingly fun popcorn genre movie.

I loved the slow burn first act where we are just being introduced to the world and characters. Actually taking the time to set everything up makes such a difference later on when all the characters are together and it all kicks off. I guess that's what making a billion dollar Black Panther movie allows you to do. The first club scene where the musicians start to play is another standout.

It also kind of has three ending, each of which I think it earns, and I actually think each successive one improved the film for me. I loved the whole coda during the credits (so make sure not to miss it)

I was worried that my inherent distaste for any kind of modern American military stuff would put me off this movie too much, but it's such a technical powerhouse that it's impossible not be be taken in by it. Incredible sound design - it's loud and shocking and unnerving, and for those 90 minutes where there is nothing really in the way of story or character development, it's still edge of your seat film making.

Knowing Alex Garland, and being an adult with a functional adult brain, I watched this aware that there is nuance in the world, and that the depiction of something isn't an inherent condoning or celebration of said thing. This is clearly and anti-war film. It's whole reason for being is to show exactly what happened based on the memories of the soldiers involved. It isn't glamorous or aspirational, or even really inspirational. It's futile and violent and messy, and ultimately meaningless. Now I'm sure some people will dismiss it out of hand purely because it depicts American soldiers fighting an unjust war (which I get, to some extent) and there will be people who blindly celebrate it because HOO-RAH U.SA (which I very much don't get) - but taken as a piece of film making it's undeniably impressive. Didn't totally do it for me I'm afraid. I think Robert Pattinson is great in the dual lead roles, I loved the look of everything, and it is certainly enjoyable with moments of pretty good sci-fi musings on the ethics and legality around a human soul - but I felt like the movie kind of lost its focus in the second act, and then found a whole new focus in the finale that I thought was pretty weak. And Mark Ruffalo was doing too much.

Man. Is it weird that this reminded me of Stand By Me? Except instead of being about the end of the carefree naivety of childhood, it's about the end of the free spirited excitement of adolescence. Also I'm amazed that I didn't hear more about this when Challengers came out, since this is so clearly an influence on that.

I get the feeling that I'd get more out of this if I knew more about Mexican history or culture, but the warmth and depth of the story and characters comes through regardless. Funny too.

Also I love when a character deliberately looks into the camera in an otherwise completely straight movie, and it's done to fantastic effect here.

From the moment Hugh Bonneville said "keep your eyes down, there's some sort of bear over there - probably selling something" I knew I was on board.

There's something genuinely magical about this film, and I think it's just that it's so clear that a lot of effort was actually put into making it good. What a concept! The jokes, the visual gags, the pitch perfect performances, the framing and set design, it's all just so incredibly pleasant.

It wasn't totally my thing, but the irrepressible charm and humour of Keke Palmer completely carried me through all the really lazy writing and lack of actual jokes. Plus the ending came together in a nice way and it had this really nice, vibrant colour palette. An easy, breezy Friday-like for the modern age.

Dunno why it took me so long to see this, like everyone else is saying, yeah, it's really good. A bunch of quality actors swanning about in robes, decieving and conniving, intrigue and mystery up to your ears. Also, the location and cinematography where bellisimo, mama mia. Looked fantastic.

The ending did fall a little flat for me. I was kind of like "ok...so what?". I think I expected something more shocking. But no complaints other than that.

One of those films that I knew I had watched, but really ed very little about the actual film. I have a very vivid memory of exactly where and when I saw it too - the Caldwell Cinema on Bloomfield Ave, visiting my family in New Jersey in August 2001, so I would have been 13 years old, which in retrospect, was too young to appreciate any of this.

It's a bit heavy handed with it's allegory and emotionality in the way that a lot of Spielberg tends to be, but by the same token, it's impossible not to get swept up in the exact emotional journey Spielberg wants you to go on. He's good like that. The nightmarish fairytale stuff is all so unnerving, carried by a really remarkable performance from Hayley Joel Osment. I love the ending too, you can really see the Kubrick influence there.

Also, from a more academic perspective, it's a fascinating watch with the knowledge that Spielberg idolised Kubrick and made this film as a way to honour him. You end up watching the whole thing through that lense, or I did at least.

This was a pleasant surprise. I mean it wasn't amazing or anything but I was a lot better than I expected. The first act is the strongest, then it gets a little more generic as it begins to remind you of other, often better things. It's a little bit Firewatch, a little bit Annihilation, but then it's also a little bit I Am Legend and a little bit Overlord. On that note actually, this also felt like it could have been reworked into a Cloverfield movie. Some shonky dialogue and shonkier VFX bring it down a little, but I did enjoy the two leads and the overall premise. However (for the second time this week, weirdly) they had no idea how to end this movie.

Also it's funny that they had Anya Taylor Joy play chess and Miles Teller play drums.

What's up with Miles Teller's voice btw? The whole film he sounds like he's just taken a fat bong rip.

As I was watching this I was thinking "this is pretty good! It's intriguing, it has it's own tone and vibe, the characters of Sam and Ross are working well, and the story is genuinely interesting". Then it felt like they forgot to write an ending? The last act so much feels like a prelude to a final sequence that just doesn't come, and it kind of leaves a sour taste in the mouth for what was a mostly enjoyable movie.

Also some of the green screen is pretty bad and there's a fair amount of clunky dialogue, but there's also the President as a Red Hulk standing on top of the crumbling White House, so swings and roundabouts. Feels like they could have done more with it, but what they did do was ok.

This was good, but it wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. The whole section where the hostage situation is first beginning to unfold and no one really knows what going on is really well done, and there are a bunch of good performances, namely Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch. But none of it really rose above the level of a well done retelling of events. All a bit surface level and a bit safe maybe. Maybe I was expecting too much? I sound more negative than I am, it was good and I enjoyed it. A good prequel to Spielberg's Munich.

I was also gonna say they could have picked a better time time to release a movie with such a sensitive subject matter, but if this film shows us anything, it's that nothing much has really changed in the last 50 years.

The Ryan Gosling Cool Jacket Trilogy 1q1473 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/alankerr/list/the-ryan-gosling-cool-jacket-trilogy/ letterboxd-list-6564179 Sun, 29 Dec 2019 10:10:56 +1300 <![CDATA[

One Man. Three Jackets. Not a lot of talking.

  • Drive

The prototypical "Ryan Gosling wears a cool jacket" movie. It has a golden scorpion on the back of it and, as far as I can tell, it plays Kavinsky.

  • The Place Beyond the Pines

Not since Eddie Murphy has red leather been so iconic. This jackets makes up for it's brief screen time by granting the wearer sick motorcycle skills

  • Blade Runner 2049

The jacket of the future... Today!

    Keeps out the cold. Cells.
    Fashionable high collar. Cells.
Suitable for humans and replicants. Interlinked.
