So much of the current decade's horror is all about escaping generational trauma, which made this an interesting contrast with its "Yeah, that awful curse that got ed down to you through no fault of your own? Good luck trying to do anything about it lulz" throughline. (The other theme of the movie, of course, is "Some people just shouldn't have kids," so that tracks.)

Probably a 4-star movie on its merits, but docking half a star because it starts…

Decided to give this a rewatch after seeing a brief clip from it on some random YouTube video, because while I liking it, and being in the minority on that, but I couldn't articulate why on either of those.

On the small screen, without it being a special occasion that let me get out to see it...yeah, I can better see the shagginess that bothered others. It's over-indulgent in its excesses, slap-dash in places, and a thematic hodge-podge.…

This is such a quintessential piece of filmmaking — its influence on the action and scifi genres can't be overstated, and everyone at every level clearly knew exactly what movie they were making, and brought their A game. It's visually stunning; the concept is compelling (even if its world can't necessarily stand up to heavy scrutiny); Reeves, Fishburne, Moss, Weaving et al. keep you engaged with their every move.
