Almost as if Lynch let a classic American sitcom live past its expiry date, as its characters find themselves exploring and coming to with the reality of their idealistic neighbourhood, discovering the underbelly which exists parallel to the utopia, their ‘All American’ innocence slowly disintegrating and replaced by a far more solemn pessimism. Yet, the Robins still came, and all is well.

Nichols performs an incredible balancing here, as he masterfully weaves between laugh out loud comedy, and really heartfelt drama. You hear about films handling two different tones, but rarely do you see it done so well. The humour undoubtably works for me here, with Hank Azaria and Nathan Lane being standouts, but Gene Hackman was certainly the MVP. I absolutely loved the dry delivery of his lines; “It’s the most intelligent show on earth.”, gold!!! It was refreshing to see…

Some really subpar character work and truly horrendous pacing on display here. You’re never really given any reason to care for these characters at all, and the film doesn’t develop them in any meaningful way either. Still a visually gorgeous looking picture though, and I’d be lying if I said that Andor’s series finale didn’t increase my enjoyment of this. Those last 15 minutes were electric.
