Overall I really liked this and as a documentary it feels vital in of focus and timing, but I don’t get the seemingly random cuts to safari/anthropological film footage of Africa? There’s a brief bit about one of the main girls wanting to “live in Africa with a pet monkey” when she grows up but even that felt out of the blue. Maybe I’m missing some parallels to the overarching theme of queer experience among young American (mostly white, but some Black) girls in the 60s but it felt fetishizing and just out of place to throw that kind of imagery in without commentary.
