This film has been on my radar for the longest time but I was too scared to watch it for the obvious reason: it concerns a serial killer who kills cats in one neighborhood. It has a certain reputation to be a very brutal film in that regard.

And yes, the plot is EXTREMELY GORY, with animal abuse, torture and death shown explicitly. I thought I knew it was drastic but I was not prepared for how far the filmmakers…

What if the Hero was sent on the quest to defeat the Villain... by this Villain himself? And the Villain often acted like a twisted Mentor? The result is a brilliant variation on the Hero's Journey known as The Hitcher, which is one of my top 4 films on Letterboxd. After this rewatch, I want to shout from the rooftops that it's also one of the best films ever made.

When watching the first sequence in this film, I had to swear in awe, which I rarely do. To quote from the super quotable Polish classic, "Mają rozmach, skurwysyny." ("They have impetus, those sons of bitches.")

I’m positively surprised. From a film d as a metaslasher filled with nostalgia for 1970s, I certainly didn’t expect a serious meditation on the role of sex and desire in our lives!

This film takes its time to get to the bloody parts and while it delivers in this department, neither gore, nor the titillating scenes are the most important aspects. The filmmakers use large part of the plot for... building the atmosphere and character development! Ha! The director/screenwriter Ti…

Trigger warnings: body dysmorphia; ageism; don't watch this film if you can't handle body horror.

As a big fan of body horror and female-centered horror, I have been anticipating this film for months. Now I'm happy to announce that it didn't disappoint and the hype around The Substance is real.

The film focuses on the cruelty of female beauty standards and the dangers of various "substances" that promise us perfection. As shown in this film, perfection is scary and unnatural.…
