Shin Godzilla

2016

I'm a bit confused by Shin Godzilla as it seems to try to be both the satire on serious kaiju films and an actual serious kaiju film. The combination didn't work for me.

The plot contains a lot of office humor and mocks the ineffectiveness of Japanese government in dealing with the monster, as the officials are limited by archaic social norms and command hierarchy. Then they learn to abandon these old rules in order to cooperate and defeat the monster.

The best parts of the film involve, unsurprisingly, Godzilla. The monster design is very interesting here: both scary and entertaining, as this creature posseses very googly eyes for some reason. I still haven't seen that many kaiju films but out of all of them this may be the most destruction committed by a single creature I've seen so far. If you long for shots of Godzilla burning Tokio down, you may like this film more than I did.
