A little hit or miss for me but the strong scenes are STRONG. Sandra Hüller is transcendent in this.

So gorgeous. And basically tailor-made to make me fall in love with it.
In "When Evil Lurks" a demon wreaks havoc and destruction in an Argentine province. The movie offers a distinct viewing experience.. not because it is scary in an unusual way, but rather due to its merciless treatment of children. Whether this aspect makes the movie outstanding is debatable. The familiar theme of possession becomes confusing by the end. The developments make little sense, and the characters, aware of this, behave outright irrationally.
perhaps weird wording given some of the activities the slasher is getting into here but this was cute?
a bit short and i honestly could've watched this as a full length feature but i loved the visuals and atmosphere. originally wasn't sure how i felt away to the cutaways to the youtube/video essayist giving comments on the movie but it came together by the end.
the great watchlist shuffle #26
okay Kelly Clarkson...
so the first movie i settled into watch got pushed back because Fandango at Home (which i only learned of its existence today btw) has unhinged ad placements/quantities. this was chosen out of my second watchlist shuffle.
deeply unhinged and a bit of a scream for 20 minutes or so but it quickly loses its appeal and can't overcome the uphill battle this was already facing (i'm allergic to some of this casting) to begin with.
unlike 99% of the movies i watch so it was something different, i guess?
A painfully average adaptaion with little to no bite.
Fair play for at least trying to explore a new angle, the journey in which Count Dracula hitchhikes below deck and sails across the ocean to Whitby.
Dracula himself in this rather so so version is beyond human, I've always liked the non human looking adaptions of Dracula. Must say I appreciate the subtly of keeping the blood sucker in the dark as well, and having a kid as a main lead is great for heightening up tensions. There's also Liam Cunningham as well, who even in the direst of films makes this film somewhat tolerable.
1st act is top tier alien invasion horror! Once she leaves her house the movie takes a slight step back for me until she gets back home and I’m right back into it! There’s a sharp turn for me though and that’s the moment she enters that red light. It becomes pretty meh for me the rest of the way, but most of the first 2/3 is just too good not to give this film a positive rating overall.
watched this for the first time not even a month ago but with a showing at the cleveland cinematheque i couldn't not go..
wonderful as always, an absolute joy to see these outdoor shots on a larger screen.
“There are thoughts in my head I have no one to talk to about.”
A film with potential that falls to being slightly derivative. Almost a good film.
Thematically, it dips its toes into the topics. It’s not bad, necessarily, just not that deep. Surface-level monologuing that repeats itself too often. The incel depiction is quite realistic. Unfortunately, I’ve met a few people like this. It sometimes feels like it can’t decide if it wants to present the protagonist as…
They didn't die. They just crossed over.
Burn the place to ground. Make sure those creepy clowns are little nothing but a puddle of latex goop on the charred remains of the manor.
Found footage I find to be quite hit and miss, sometimes you get the most generic found footage film possible and then you get something like Hell House.
Disturbing and generally gets the heart racing with nervousness, that clown is just the absolute definition of the word creepy.
After revisiting 2018s The Nun I was obviously going to rewatch the sequel.
Thankfully Nun II is actually way better than I originally ed, I saw it in cinema on release day and thought it was just ever so slightly better than the first. Which wasn't really saying much.
Biggest issue I had with the original film was it's constant need to jumpscare, it's absolutely littered with them and the sequel honestly has some really creative scares in place. The…
I'm thankful for Eli Roth making a 80s homage splatter fest.
