2025 Cult Movie Challenge Week 9: Keith David Week

“One day maybe you'll learn that not being able to relate to other people isn't a badge of honor.”

Wasn’t sure what to expect here but I know I ended up enjoying it a lot. A great mix of family drama and satire backed by some incredibly good performances. A well made movie from top to bottom.

HoopTober 11 Movie #34

“Ladies and gentlemen: the dead are back.”

I said I was gonna finish HoopTober this year and look that, I did! Following along with all of you was a blast. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.

We Are Zombies had a fun concept and some good effects throughout but doesn’t deliver enough to be anything more than meh.

The fact that this takes place in New Jersey and shitbird Steve gives Frankie anything other than pork roll for breakfast is a slap in the face to my great state.

Trash movie, fun to watch with the boys.

HoopTober 11 Movie #10

“You'd be a good mom someday, Auntie Beth.”
”Oh yeah?”
”Yeah. You know how to lie to kids.”

Now this is how you open a movie. Quick, brutal, and dope title card sequence to boot. It’s a little slow after that but then the shit hits the fan and it’s great.

It takes all the Evil Dead beats you want to see and does a great job adjusting the to a new setting.

“Keep your head up, all right? You can do this.”
“Yeah, I was gonna tell you the same thing.”

Another fantastic entry in the All Boys Prep School Movies That Remind Me Of My All Boys Prep School cinematic universe. Wish I would’ve watched it during the holidays but it will certainly be added to the yearly rotation next December. I can’t say enough good things about Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Really impressed with Dominic Sessa, too. Coming in to your first feature and standing toe to toe with those two? Tough to do but he helped make it a heartwarming watch.

“I must go punch that baby.”

It’s as stunning as it is weird and fun. Unreal performance from Stone who definitely shines bright in this role. Probably my favorite thing she’s ever done. It makes me happy that a movie this visually gorgeous and bold in almost every aspect has got so much love and praise.

The cinematography and sound design stood out the most. So many well framed shots throughout, all accompanied by terrifying noises coming from beyond the walls. The last bit where it shows you the true horrors and evil of Auschwitz had me equal parts angry and depressed. Took a second for me to gain my composure and leave the theater. Even then, it’s gonna stick with my for awhile.

“7 hours. Man, who knows where we’re gonna be in 7 hours.”

Come for Kyle Gallner and stay for, well, Kyle Gallner! He’s the best part about this and his performance is believably terrifying. Johnny Berchtold is really solid too. If Gallner is believably terrifying, he is believably anxious and scared. Hopefully we see more of him in the future. Most of the dialogue before Benson snaps was not great and I wasn’t sure what direction things were going to go, so I’m glad that changed and it went in a tense but emotional direction.
