I said I was gonna finish HoopTober this year and look that, I did! Following along with all of you was a blast. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.
We Are Zombies had a fun concept and some good effects throughout but doesn’t deliver enough to be anything more than meh.

“She was born at the same time as Jesus. Midnight on Christmas Eve. Isn’t that remarkable?”
When the baby was born I thought “this has gotta be almost done” so I looked at the time left and a part of me died when it said 42 minutes. Such a slog to get through. Probably would’ve been better with a group but watching it solo on a Wednesday afternoon sucked ass and not in the fun way.

“Guess what? It’s All Saints Day.”
Perfect that this lined up to be my Horror-Thon warm up watch. Guts and brains galore! So many dope moments. Loved the bleeding eyes. When I thought the drill was going to go into dude’s eye I was BUGGING. Then when it went through his cheek to the other cheek I was bugging but for a different reason. Great kill, great effect. I also feel like I’ve noted it before…

“The hands. Holy god. the hands!”
Cannot get over how good this score is. Easily the best part. For a movie that’s a 100 years old I was surprisingly engaged. The ending wasn’t great but, like, I can’t really fault that all things considered.

“An instrument of evil, like they said in the damn movie, you heard it.”
A sick Goblin synth score during the opening credits is an easy way to get me invested. A movie inside a movie theater is a gimmick that also works for me 99% of the time and I’m happy to report this in fact worked for me here.
It’s not perfect but it’s fun to watch unfold. The effects carry it through…

“Look, if Howard Johns has been released, I’m sure we can get him back without too much trouble.”
It’s your basic 80s slasher except this one has some 3D moments sprinkled in. They don’t really add anything but the random “oh, this is a 3D shot” moments aren’t terrible, either. It hits all the slasher beats you want, from a good final girl to the shitty and annoying characters you cheer for when they get theirs.…

One thing you should know about me is that I will fuck hard with any late 90s horror action movie no matter how dated the CGI is. A cruise ship is such a great setting for a horror movie, too. Bloodier and creepier than I expected. When they stumble on the bones and all you can hear are the screams of the dead? That’s some great horror movie stuff!
“Added up, how much money did you get from the Clutters that night?”
“Between $40 and $50.”
I finished In Cold Blood last night so felt like I needed to watch this. I can’t say anything about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance that hasn’t already been said but I really was blown away. The story itself is good, nothing spectacular, but he makes it so worth a watch. Clifton Collins Jr. and Catherine Keener also had great performances. If you’ve read the book I think it’s worthwhile to check this out too.
