A brutal story of an unlikely duo who will stop at nothing to find what they are looking for, Adilkhan Yerzhanov's award-winning film Steppenwolf is "a nihilistic, hyper-violent redemption tale filled with social commentary" (Molly Henery, The Blogging Banshee) and "a must-see for fans of ultra-violent, vicious and unforgiving revenge films" (Gary Gamble, Moviehooker).

Tamara (Anna Starchenko), a young lady consumed by trauma, searches for her missing son, Timka, in a small town dominated by riots and violence. In a desperate attempt to get him back, she teams up with an amoral former police investigator (Berik Aitzhanov) whose methods prove to be frequently cruel and sadistic. Quietly determined, Tamara decides to complete the mission with the nihilistic detective, no matter the cost, as the pair embark on a bloody and bullet-riddled road trip in their combined search for salvation. Winner of the Golden Raven Grand Prix at the 2024 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the Outstanding Performance Award for both Anna Starchenko and Berik Aitzhanov at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival, Steppenwolf is the latest film from acclaimed director Adilkhan Yerzhanov (Cannes-selected The Gentle Indifference of the World and Venice-selected Goliath) and Oscar-nominated producer Alexander Rodnyansky (Leviathan).

SHE WON’T BE SILENCED.

Director Anthony Waller (The Piper, An American Werewolf in Paris) combines cat-and-mouse suspense with classic intrigue in Mute Witness, an updated take on the Hitchcockian thriller in which the only witness to a brutal crime can neither speak nor cry out in terror.

Billy Hughes (Marina Sudina) is a mute special effects artist working on a low budget American slasher movie being shot in Russia. Accidentally locked in the studio late one night, she stumbles upon two men shooting what appears to be a snuff film. Having borne witness to their victim’s final moments, Billy desperately flees – but this is only the start of a protracted night of terror, drawing her and her friends into a tangled web of intrigue, involving the KGB, the Moscow police… and a mysterious crime kingpin known as “The Reaper”.

Filmed on location in Moscow and co-starring Fay Ripley (Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein) and Evan Richards (Society), Mute Witness is an unpredictable, nerve-shreddingly tense viewing experience.

Struggling to cope, Anna becomes fixated on finding Booger, the stray cat she and Izzy took in together. Deftly blending elements of Mark Duplass’ Creep with Man Bites Dog and mismatched buddy movies such as The Cable Guy, Stéphane is a darkly comic thriller set in the world of amateur film-making that is as bleakly funny as it is disturbingly twisted.

When Tim (Bastien Garcia), an ambitious and aspiring filmmaker out making his latest short film, encounters the eccentric Stéphane (played by the film's co-director, Lucas Pastor), it seems like a match made in heaven. Stéphane claims to be an experienced special effect supervisor and stuntman and, after impressing Tim with his home-made pyrotechnics, the two embark on a journey to Stéphane’s private island to set about making a World War II epic, along with Stephane’s friend, a strange and mostly-mute refugee actress named Bianca (Eva Gregorieff). But as their filmmaking odyssey continues, it soon becomes apparent that neither men may be what they claim, and tensions quickly escalate...

Part found-footage, part sinister thriller and part self-reflexive black comedy, Stéphane is punk filmmaking at its finest and “a real rollercoaster ride” (Eye for Film) that will “keep you squirming on the edge of your seat” (SplatterPunkReviews), right until the final, chilling, post-credits scene.

Isao Natsuyagi stars as Kiba, a charismatic ronin who wanders into a small town and ends up ensnared in a local conflict that becomes increasingly treacherous. After dispatching a pair of highway criminals seen robbing a courier wagon, Kiba agrees to assist a beautiful blind woman who runs the local shipping company. Double- and triple-crosses ensue, illustrated with savage but economical violence courtesy of famed director Hideo Gosha (Three Outlaw Samurai, Violent Streets). The result is a lean and mean triumph of samurai cinema, cementing Gosha's status as a master of the genre.

From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore (City of the Living Dead, The House by the Cemetery), comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece, Don't Torture a Duckling.

When the sleepy rural village of Accendura is rocked by a series of murders of young boys, the superstitious locals are quick to apportion blame, with the suspects including the local "witch", Maciara (Florinda Bolkan, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin). With the bodies piling up and the community gripped by panic and a thirst for bloody vengeance, two outsiders - city journalist Andrea (Tomas Milian, The Four of the Apocalypse) and spoilt rich girl Patrizia (Barbara Bouchet, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) - team up to crack the case. But before the mystery is solved, more blood will have been spilled, and not all of it belonging to innocents...

Deemed shocking at the time for its brutal violence, depiction of the Catholic Church and themes of child murder and implied pedophilia, Don't Torture a Duckling is widely regarded today as Fulci's greatest film, rivalling the best of his close rival Dario Argento. Arrow Films is proud to present this uniquely chilling film in its 4K debut.

In 1989, legendary Japanese studio Toei launched their V-Cinema line of direct-to-video genre features. V-Cinema Essentials: Bullets & Betrayal presents nine explosive titles representing some of the best the Japanese crime film has to offer.

Fast-paced and action-packed, Crime Hunter: Bullets of Rage sees detective Joe Kawamura out for revenge against the men who gunned down his partner. Along the way he teams up with Lily, a gun-toting nun looking to get back five million dollars that was stolen from her church. Next up, Neo Chinpira: Zoom Goes the Bullet sees wannabe yakuza Junko get more than he bargained for when tasked with avenging the murder of a fellow gang member, or face the consequences for betrayal. Meanwhile, in Shunichi Nagasaki's unbearably tense thriller Stranger, a late-night taxi driver is stalked by the unseen driver of an SUV, who just might have a connection to the taxi driver's criminal past. In Carlos, the eponymous Brazilian-Japanese petty criminal sees an opportunity to play rival yakuza gangs against each other, but bites off much more than he can chew. Burning Dog is a gripping heist film where a gang of thieves plot to rob a US military base in Okinawa, but rising tensions in the group threaten to put the plan in jeopardy.

The sequel to one of the most iconic Japanese franchises of all time, Female Prisoner Scorpion: Death Threat sees a female assassin hired to infiltrate a women's prison and search for The Scorpion, a legendary rebellious prisoner hiding in the bowels of the building. After his fiancée is killed in the crossfire of a yakuza turf war, a man on the edge remorselessly hunts down the gangsters responsible in legendary director Teruo Ishii's The Hitman: Blood Smells Like Roses. Meanwhile in Danger Point: The Road to Hell, duo of contract killers' fragile partnership is tested when their most recent hit starts to have unforeseen consequences. Finally, assassin and femme fatale Shion rebels against the fanatical religious order who prepared her from birth to be the perfect killer in the pulpy XX: Beautiful Hunter.

Filled with action, thrills and double-crosses, V-Cinema Essentials: Bullets & Betrayal is an electrifying compendium of gems from the Japanese video underworld.

Sharp Shorts Starter Kit with Kevin Fermini 276k6f https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/list/sharp-shorts-starter-kit-with-kevin-fermini/ letterboxd-list-60546753 Tue, 11 Mar 2025 03:48:07 +1300 <![CDATA[

Kevin Fermini is the writer-director-editor of Death Walks on Nitrate, now showing as part of ARROW’s Sharp Shorts.

Hi Kevin. What four films influenced your short, Death Walk On Nitrate?

Indisputably the biggest influences on Death Walks were Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up and Dario Argento’s Deep Red.

Thematically, Blow Up kind of affirmed to me that my ideas for Death Walks were worth exploring — detachment, disinterest, and human emptiness. Oh yeah, and the guy has a
camera too.

It’s funny because I don’t find Blow Up very entertaining to watch — and yet I find it fascinating how unlikable its protagonist is, how emotionally hollow the film can feel, and how the central murder mystery thread seems to just be tossed aside as the runtime ticks on. Making a film purposely no fun is not something I’m personally interested in, but the intent and atmosphere of the film was something I just couldn’t shake!

As for Deep Red, I don’t think that influence is any secret. Dario Argento shot a pair of evil eyes floating in a black void and I felt joy. Distilling malice, voyeurism, and violence into basic, iconographic elements is the sort of thing that makes me love cinema.

And speaking of which — Female Prisoner Scorpion #701 takes those elements and breathes furious pop-art life into them!! No emotion in Female Prisoner Scorpion is internal, everything the characters feel is brought to shrieking visual life! Piercing eyes of vengeance, floating ghostly bloodstained attackers, hair flying wildly in the air against a screaming red neon backdrop. These films take the term “subtlety is for cowards” to new levels of high art.

And of course, we can’t close out this discussion without Tetsuo The Iron Man, perhaps the most insanely kinetic film ever burned to celluloid. The editing of Death Walks’ climax was hugely inspired by Tetsuo, and if I managed to capture 10% of Shinya Tsukamoto’s energy in my film, I consider it a success.

And what are your four favourite Cult films?

If there’s a through line to the types of films which resonate the most with me, it’s films that explore the potential of cinema’s visual language.

Hausu is not just one of the greatest examples of this approach to filmmaking — it’s an overflowing, full-to-bursting epic tome of visual trickery. I’ve seen this film well over 20 times, and with each re-watch I learn more about the possibilities of cinema. I’ve heard people call Hausu weird for weirdness’s sake, but what’s wild about it is once you understand Nobuhiko Obayashi’s visual language, it all
clicks with a marvellous degree of consistency. Obayashi was pushing overstimulated visual storytelling to levels which would fry a TikTok child’s brain, and he was doing it nearly 50 years ago.

Meanwhile, films like The Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead are consistent wellsprings of inspiration, showcasing what a small and scrappy team of filmmakers can pull off with limited resources. The Evil Dead is itself quite a treasure trove of visual language too — with Sam Raimi’s flying cameras, canted angles and stop-motion trickery.

On the other hand, Dawn of the Dead, while a bit more visually reserved, feels so fresh to me in its idiosyncratic editing and beguiling creative choices. I don’t view these aspects as negatives at all — the choice to end a 2hr-plus zombie epic with a biker massacre, immediately followed by an upbeat show-tune montage of mall imagery over credits, is one of my favourite DECISIONS in all of cinema.

And last but certainly not least, we have The End of Evangelion. This film doesn’t really have anything to do with Death Walks on Nitrate — but anime, giant robots, and Hideaki Anno’s desire to crush his audience’s bleeding hearts in his hand and then spit on their corpses, are all badass.

Death Walks on Nitrate, Deep Red and Female Prisoner Scorpion #701 are all now streaming on ARROW.

David Yorke is the director of the slick and hilarious short film Eric, which stars Host's Jemma Moore and a scene-stealing pomeranian...

We recently caught up with David, who also directed the sci-fi body-horror short Eject, to discuss the Cult films that influenced Eric, and the Cult films that he cannot live without.

Hi David! What are the four Cult films that you feel most influenced Eric's story and tone?

For Eric, the tone was everything. I wanted to create a film that would both creep the audience out and make them nervously laugh, and films like The Loved Ones and Jennifer’s Body were key references for capturing that blend of dark comedy and tension. Both films have a unique way of mixing horror with humour, and I wanted to explore that dynamic with the killer pomeranian.

At the same time, there are moments where the tone shifts to something more serious. Get Out was a huge influence in these parts, particularly in how it portrays a character who’s out of their depth, trying to survive against overwhelming odds. I wanted Eric to have that sense of suspense and the feeling of being trapped in an increasingly bizarre and dangerous situation. The balance between comedy and genuine threat was something I worked hard to achieve.

Awesome. And what are the four Cult films that you just couldn't live without?

There’s something about the perfect blend of genre and character that has always drawn me in, and The Thing, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Aliens represent everything I love about storytelling.

Whether it’s the mind-bending heartbreak of Eternal Sunshine, the sheer paranoia and groundbreaking practical effects of The Thing, or the action-packed but deeply human struggles of T2 and Aliens, each of these movies has shaped me as a filmmaker.

Science fiction and horror have always been my favourite genres, but what truly makes these films timeless is their emotional depth. Eternal Sunshine isn’t just a high-concept sci-fi story, it’s an intimate look at love, memory, and regret.

T2 takes a world-ending scenario and grounds it in the relationship between a boy and a machine, making it as moving as it is thrilling.

Aliens elevates its action and horror with Ripley’s personal journey, making her one of the most compelling protagonists in film history.

And The Thing? It’s a masterclass in tension, isolation, and practical effects that still hold up today. Every time these movies are on, I have to watch. They aren’t just great genre films, they’re films that remind me why I love storytelling in the first place.

Eric and Eject are both available to stream instantly on ARROW in the Sharp Shorts collection.

Drew Maxwell Weiss is the director of the popular ARROW Sharp Short, Anatomy Maestro.

A deliciously sleazy and creepy short film that begins as giallo and... we wouldn't to spoil it for you if you haven't watched it yet! Suffice it to say, if you dig Lustig-style New York tales you should watch Anatomy Maestro immediately.

We recently caught up with Drew to pick his brain about the Cult films that influenced Anatomy Maestro, as well as what his most beloved Cult films of all time are...

So, Drew, how did Anatomy Maestro come about and what were the Cult films that influenced how it turned out?

Anatomy Maestro was purely a directing exercise. My childhood friend, Lily Mars, who I’ve known for over 20 years, came to me with a great opportunity. She had access to an excellent camera package with a camera and prime lenses. Lily and I had always wanted to collaborate, and she offered to work with me on this project. However, there was one condition: we only had the equipment for a short time. I had just three days to conceive an idea, and we only had three days to shoot. Ultimately, we shot the main footage in two days. Months later, I shot the black-and-white segments on my own using a handicam and an iPhone.

The reason I call Anatomy Maestro an “exercise” is that it was an opportunity to explore a hybrid style combining Giallo and exploitation street movies. Directors like Dario Argento, Takashi Miike, Bill Lustig, and Abel Ferrara were major influences. For years, I had been itching to combine these styles into a short film.

For example, I drew heavily from Argento’s Tenebrae—the interactive, poppy Goblin music, the first-person perspective of the killer, and the visual language of black leather gloves. I aimed to reimagine these elements for the digital age, emphasizing pop music, visual style, and fashion. I’m perfectly comfortable prioritizing style over substance in a short film format.

Takashi Miike’s Audition also inspired me, particularly the anti-hero Asami Yamazaki (played by Eihi Shiina). Asami’s combination of external innocence and internal madness inspired Zoe’s character in Anatomy Maestro. I loved the idea of reversing the predator-prey dynamic. In Audition, Asami begins as prey, and Shigeharu is the predator. In the second half, the roles reverse—a structure I adopted for my short. I paid homage to the butcher apron, gloves, and torture tools from Audition while adding my own touches: pink leather gloves and magnifying goggles with a light attached, inspired by the surreal short La Jetée by Chris Marker.

Bill Lustig’s Maniac encouraged me to lean into gritty, urban textures for the New York City setting. Similarly, Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer inspired me to use the drill as a murder weapon and to focus on the raw, timeless exteriors of New York streets. I wanted to avoid modern-looking locations, instead capturing the city’s historic charm—buildings from the ’40s to ’70s that still stand tall today. These streets retain the essence of New York’s cinematic past, making them perfect for a film inspired by exploitation cinema.

Lastly, I’d like to give an honorable mention to Ms. 45 for inspiring Zoe’s gunplay and for naming the character after Zoe Lund, a true artist whose work deserves eternal recognition.

Fantastic. And what are your favourite Cult films of all time?

I always claim that Wake in Fright is the greatest movie ever made—a perfect film. It begins with a slow, comfortable Australian summer in December and gradually boils into a sun-drenched nightmare. The oppressive heat and tension creep in as the villains become more unhinged. I love films where a protagonist goes on vacation, only for things to get progressively stranger and more dehumanizing. Wake in Fright is a massive inspiration for all my work, particularly my film Lady in the Mask, where heat and sunlight play a pivotal role.

In my opinion, Phantom of the Paradise is De Palma’s most creative film. The world-building is fresh and dreamlike, and the movie carries a powerful critique of the music industry. It examines how dangerous and manipulative executives can be—a metaphor that applies to almost any industry. Paul Williams, who wrote the brilliant original music, ironically plays the talentless, sociopathic villain Swan. The soundtrack features some of the greatest music ever made, spanning a diverse range of genres. If someone asked me to define a “genre picture,” I’d point to Phantom of the Paradise.

Directed by Carlo Lizzani, Crazy Joe is an exceptional, gritty New York deep cut. It’s an exploitation-style biopic about the life and death of mobster Joey Gallo, played by Peter Boyle. The film explores Gallo’s complexity as a cold-blooded killer, family man, and American hero (after saving children from a Brooklyn apartment fire). The writing is clever, the characters are unforgettable, and the direction is fresh. It feels like a lost relic, as if it were unearthed from a time capsule. Fans of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series would love this movie.

Robert Altman’s Short Cuts is a brilliant suburban LA tale with a massive ensemble cast. There’s no main character; instead, the film interweaves multiple stories with nuanced performances and compelling scenarios. The opening title sequence, featuring helicopters flying over the intertwined narratives, is one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen. This film is comfort food for me—meat, potatoes, and a bowl of chili. Its dialogue, characters, and structure are cinematic perfection.

Sharp Shorts Starter Kit with Noomi Yates 2e1z1 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/list/sharp-shorts-starter-kit-with-noomi-yates/ letterboxd-list-58805203 Tue, 4 Feb 2025 01:33:28 +1300 <![CDATA[

The writer-director Noomi Yates is the latest incredibly talented filmmaker to us for Sharp Shorts Starter Kit.

Noomi's short film, Only Yourself To Blame, was executive produced by Rose Glass (Saint Maud, Love Lies Bleeding) and is now showing on ARROW as part of the Sharp Shorts collection.

When Mai sends her drunk friend Sian home in a taxi, she finds herself being pursued by a shadowy assailant who is copying her every move. Unable to outrun her stalker, she confronts them to discover something deeply unsettling.

We recently caught up with Noomi to find out which four Cult films influenced Only Yourself To Blame, and what her four favourite Cult films of all time are.

Possession (Andrzej Żuławski, 1981)

The film’s use of liminal spaces—those eerie, transitional environments—is a masterclass in visually communicating characters caught between states of being. The iconic subway scene, a deeply disturbing moment of raw emotion and physicality, is seared into my brain since the first time I saw it. It's awesome and horrific in equal measure.

But beyond that famous scene, tonally, this film is surprisingly absurdist, almost operatic in its approach to deeply personal and emotive subjects. These unconventional choices are part of what emboldened me to take risks with my own storytelling. This film is fearless and I really ire Isabelle Adjani’s harrowing performance. It became a benchmark for what I sought from my lead actor, and I did ask her to watch the movie before we started filming to give her some ideas. My lead, Severine, comes from a dance background and so she was really into the physicality of what I wanted, and Possession was a huge influence in that regard.

Morvern Callar (Lynne Ramsay, 2002)

This may seem like a bit of a strange film to cite as an influence on my work because it's not a horror at all - far from it. Lynne Ramsay’s intimate style captures the poetry and humanity of the mundane. She is someone who I deeply ire. I love all her movies, but there is something really special about this one for me because it's a very understated, beautiful, emotionally charged film about a woman on a journey from grief to self-discovery and hope. And in a weird way that is thematically connected to my film. Lynne Ramsey is a visual poet, there is something so moving and beautifully human about the way she sees the world. Her work has had an enormous influence on me as a filmmaker and this film in particular is one I come back to over and over again.

Us (Jordan Peele, 2019)

While Us deals with themes of class, privilege, and gentrification, its visual execution had a profound influence on Only Yourself To Blame, for obvious reasons to those who've seen my short!

I must have watched this film ten times during pre-production—particularly studying the fight choreography and the interplay of actors in dual roles. There have obviously been a lot of horror films about doppelgangers, and it remains one of my favourite kinds of uncanny valley monsters. In my case in Only Yourself To Blame, it was a great way to externalise an internal struggle, but in this case, Jordan Peele was making a statement about class/gentrification/privilege. Just goes to show that you can have the same visual idea but the subtext/ context completely subverts how it’s interpreted. That's the power of cinema!

Cat People (Jacques Tourneur, 1942)

When I was doing research for my film, I spent a lot of time looking at examples of chase sequences and women being followed. I watched hundreds of examples but I kept coming back to Cat People, which features one of cinema’s first and most effective jump scares. Its mastery of tension-building—juxtaposing light and shadow, the seen and the unseen, and brilliant use of misdirection! A timeless lesson in horror storytelling. I often returned to this film for inspiration when crafting suspenseful scenes in my projects. It’s a reminder that simplicity, when done well, can evoke enduring a big response.

Rather than list my all-time favourite films, I’ve chosen to focus on the ones that have influenced my next project—a feature I’m developing with EPIK Pictures. I can’t reveal too much yet, but I will say it deals with doppelgängers, liminal spaces, and the relationship between technology and self-perception. Here are my top 4 that have influenced me on this project:

Pulse (Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 2001)

Few films capture loneliness and existential dread as poignantly as Pulse. Its depiction of the internet as a haunting, isolating force feels eerily prescient. The film’s chilling atmosphere, crafted through sparse visuals and haunting sound design, left a deep impression on me. Its exploration of the "ghost in the machine" resonates with my project’s themes of technology and identity. This is one of the most haunting films I’ve ever seen, and I highly recommend it.

Noroi: The Curse (Kōji Shiraishi, 2005)

I only discovered Noroi: The Curse recently, but it instantly became my favourite found-footage horror film because it uses the limitations of the format to enhance believability and atmosphere. It’s really unsettling and it manages to navigate the choppy waters of suspending our disbelief, expertly walking that fine line between authenticity and artifice with precision. And most importantly, it's really scary. I can’t speak highly enough of it, if you haven't seen it GO WATCH IT NOW!!

Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997)

David Lynch’s work has shaped my career more than I can express. His recent ing hit me deeply, as his films were a major influencer on my decision to become a filmmaker in the first place. I honestly think if Eraserhead hadn't blown my mind in college, I wouldn't be doing what I do now. Whilst I didn’t know him personally, his films influenced not just my work but also the way I see the world. I will never see a flickering light bulb without thinking of him!

It was hard for me to narrow down which of his films I wanted to pick for this list because they all mean so much to me, but I chose Lost Highway, because its exploration of doppelgängers, identity, and the blurred lines between reality and perception, epitomizes themes that recur in both all of his work and mine.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things (Charlie Kaufman, 2020)

Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a masterclass in introspection and boundary-pushing storytelling. He's a very morose genius! I watched it twice in a row because the second viewing revealed an entirely different film. Kaufman’s ability to craft intricate, dark narratives within the confines of a single character’s mind is astonishing because it's so hard to do this well!

Often a film that "doesn't really happen" is ultimately unsatisfying and leaves the audience feeling cheated. However, he manages to create fully 3-dimensional characters that have desires and depth that extends beyond a mere proxy, whilst maintaining his solipsistic dystopia. The film’s non-linear approach to time, combined with its layered references and metaphors, makes it a haunting exploration of an existential nightmare that's both terrifying and sad. It’s one of the most underrated horror films of the past 15 years, and its tonal complexity continues to inspire me.

Only Yourself To Blame and Noroi: The Curse are available to stream instantly on ARROW.

Sharp Shorts Starter Kit with Luke LeCount e2715 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/list/sharp-shorts-starter-kit-with-luke-lecount/ letterboxd-list-58091244 Fri, 24 Jan 2025 00:53:11 +1300 <![CDATA[

New York-based director Luke LeCount’s pulse-pounding and anxiety-inducing short film Cut & Run is now showing as part of ARROW’s Sharp Shorts collection. Playing like a micro Good Time, Luke’s film also showcases the talent of rising star Rigo Garay (The Leech, Crumb Catcher) and cinematographer Sean Sellers.

We recently caught up with Luke and Sean to talk about the films that influenced Cut & Run, as well as some of their favourite Cult films.

ARROW: Luke, you wanted to include Sean in your Sharp Shorts Starter Kit.

Luke: My films and the filmmaking process are so tied to my cinematographer, Sean Sellers, that I felt a list like this would be incomplete without his insights. My movies would look completely different if they weren’t filtered through his lens (literally and figuratively) and I’m grateful they are. Hopefully, this helps showcase why Cut & Run looks and feels the way it does. Thanks for watching!

ARROW: Brilliant. Would you like to take us through the films that influenced your short?

Luke: First is Dog Day Afternoon. I love movies and people who are so focused by a singular goal that they’re willing to give up everything else in their life to reach it. For the first year after moving to New York City, Al Pacino with his fist raised outside the bank was my phone background. It was a nice reminder about why I left my social work career and all my friends and family back home in Indiana so I could come here and get it done.

Cut & Run now has a feature script that my crew and I are trying to get made. I sent it to someone recently and they said, “Dog Day Afternoon in a storage unit!” and although I never had that thought while writing, it seemed really obvious that it had to be a subconscious influence. Some things are just so important that they become permanent fixtures in your brain.

ARROW: You both picked Nicolas Winding-Refn’s Pusher as your second influence.

Sean: Pusher made me feel like I could shoot on the street and still make it look cinematic. Using real locations and maximising their impact.

Luke: This film was also on MY list and it was really cool to see Sean name it when I asked him what he felt like influenced his camera work. I guess we were trying to make the same movie after all!

ARROW: Next up for you is Collateral, Luke?

Luke: Michael Mann is a genius. His early implementation of digital filmmaking is the best digital has ever looked. I’ve always told my cinematographer, Sean, when we reach our peak this is what it would look like visually. Michael Mann always has these cold blues in his images that knock me over and they’re all over this film. The tungsten, gross-looking, yellow streetlights also played into what I wanted to show here. We shot on the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera which exports at 1080p, the same lower resolution format as the Viper camera that Mann used here.

ARROW: And last up for your influences is Wong Kar-Wai’s Fallen Angels?

Sean: Doyle, Doyle, Doyle. Of fucking course. Christopher Doyle’s colouring and style were a massive influence. I’ve always been drawn to visuals that force you to feel something, even if it’s unsettling or raw. If someone calls my work just "nice” or “pleasant," just kill me. Scrap the whole shit.

ARROW: OK. Let’s do you guys’ favourite Cult films. What’s first, Luke?

Luke: Bringing Out the Dead. I’m not an artsy or particularly smart filmmaker so of course my favourite director is Marty and this is his most overlooked in my opinion. I’m obsessed with this movie. It makes me laugh and cry. I see so many parallels between my time as a social worker and what Nicholas Cage’s paramedic character, Frank Pierce, is going through.

“I realised that my training was useful in less than ten percent of the calls and saving someone's life was rarer than that. After a while, I grew to understand that my role was less about saving lives than about bearing witness. I was a grief mop. It was enough that I simply showed up.”

This film says everything about the burning guilt I feel constantly in my life and about my fixation on redemption only through means of suffering.

Paul Schrader pens an unbelievable script with huge help from Joe Connelly who wrote the book it was based on and who was actually a NYC paramedic.

“Forgive me, Rose.”
“It’s not your fault. No one asked you to suffer. That was your idea.”

ARROW: Sean, next up, you’ve chosen a Mia Hansen-Løve film?

Sean: I saw Goodbye First Love randomly at Metrograph one day sitting in the balcony in the first row. It's rare that I’m sucked into a film, like wrapped up in it, real cozy. It wasn't just a crush on Lola Creton. It was the soul of the film, the sentimentality and all that. I felt for the girl and the guy, and the older guy all the same. I thought to myself, from now on, I want to make movies like that. The only criteria being that I feel raw when watching, and that it lingers.

ARROW: What’s your next pick, Luke?

Luke: Buzzard. Joel Potyrkus’ movie started everything for me. It really felt like I was seeing a movie made by someone like me for the first time ever. I’ve seen the term “metal slackerism” thrown around for his movies and that label makes sense, but for me, it’s just that his movies and characters felt so familiar to a poor, punk kid from the Midwest. His films were and continue to be really inspirational for me.

And since ARROW is a champion of short films, I’ll go ahead and sneak Joel’s early Super 8 shorts in here: Gordon and Coyote. They blew my mind. I filmed my first short on an iPhone (the only camera I had at the time) within a month after watching those. Essential viewing for any young filmmaker who doesn’t know how to begin.

ARROW: And, finally, Sean, what is your last favourite Cult film?

Sean: À Tout De Suite. There’s something attractive about abandoning "privilege" for a calling. Whether it's love or danger, the general excitement of life. Watching innocence fade away, truths come to light. Just learning. I can relate to learning. Growing pains. And love, of course. I could talk shots but the feeling from this film is what sticks with me.

Cut & Run, The Leech and Pusher* are all available to stream on ARROW now.
Crumb Catcher is coming to ARROW soon.

*not all titles are available in all territories.

A new century saw Cult filmmakers looking forward to the future and wanting to shake up norms with new approaches. There was also a burgeoning distrust in the technology which was becoming a bigger and more important part in all of our lives. Boundaries were being pushed and challenged, and new stars and auteurs were beginning to emerge that would go on to define the Cult film scene for years to come.

There was also an element of looking back too. Acknowledging the past and giving praise to the films that the current generation had grown up on, but also giving them a fresh spin. Not only with sequels and remakes that wanted to make what came before relevant for the audience of now, but also documentaries that delved deep into what had made the films of the previous century classics.

Take a ride through the films of the naughty noughties in OOs Cult.

As well as starring in Wynona Earp and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Ryan Irving is the writer and director of the short film Bark.

Now showing as part of the Sharp Shorts collection on ARROW, Bark is a comedy-horror slasher told from a rather unusual POV… that of the tree who is overlooking the action!

We caught up with Ryan to ask about some of the films that influenced Bark, as well as his personal favourite Cult films.

Hi Ryan. Bark manages the not-easy feat of balancing comedy and horror. What are four Cult films that influenced your short and how?

“It's really difficult to speak of Bark without spoiling the midway turn. The goal was to keep audiences wondering what the heck is happening at every moment. That's my favourite storytelling; the ones that provide the "ah-ha moment". The Cabin In The Woods emanates a lot of the same qualities.

You know that film is called The Cabin In The Woods, you know it's a horror movie, and yet it opens with two office workers complaining about the dull annoyances of home life in a florescent break room. It's not until much later that you learn how the opening is connected to the titular horror of the film.

Similarly, Bark opens upon comedic mundane life, and once the audience gets comfortable we pull the rug out and crank the film into a love letter of classic horrors.

We wanted to emulate the clever wit of Shaun of the Dead while wearing the leather face of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (which you can see homaged with one of our characters). The combination of which creates something akin to Evil Dead II; a unique balance between comedy and horror.

I’ve always ired Sam Rami for sailing the boat into the storm. The first Evil Dead was supposedly written to steer his career away from comedies. However, upon its release it was praised for its comedic qualities. So with a bigger budget behind Sam, he decided to swerve into the absurdity even more with Evil Dead II and Army Of Darkness.

What we’re left with today is a horror franchise that continues the tradition of depicting some of the most jaw-clenching body horror that’s so ridiculous it’s hilarious. Bark doesn’t have gore as gnarly as in Evil Dead II, but it’s certainly an absurd comedy/horror.

I hope people enjoy Bark as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Well done on managing to not spoil Bark!

It’s a tough ask we know, but can you tell us what your four favourite films of all time are?

“When it comes to subverting expectations Holy Motors is the grand master. Its protagonist takes on many characters, through different genres, in a performance piece seemingly for nobody. So why does he do it? What's the point of becoming so many different characters, performing so many different acts without an audience? It's a bit like life, no?

Blade Runner is unbelievably stunning and the methods to achieve its fidelity is pure wizardry. For example, the intro shot of the city (nicknamed the Hades landscape) was shot entirely in camera. To achieve this they hand-crafted the city on a 15x8 foot table with models acid-etched into brass.

Next, they used a motion-controlled camera to expose the film to the model city over and over again while exposing for different elements (shadows, lights, environment) one at a time. Literally rewinding the film past the gate, exposing a new element while blocking off the rest and shooting the scene again and again, an hour per take. What amounts to a ten-second scene was shot over the course of a week. The result is a full practical city with lights that react naturally to the set without any reduction in fidelity. Like I said, wizardry.

The dedication to the craft is astounding. With the rise of technology, the budget for practical scenes like this fell to computer graphics. I don’t think we’ll see anything quite as intricate or practically gorgeous as Blade Runner.

Likewise, Akira pushed the envelope for animation. Katsuhiro Ôtomo delivered jaw-dropping images that modern artists still draw inspiration from today. The detail of how each character moved and talked was more complex than anything else at the time because the studio drew art for every single frame; every single muscle twitch, every single mouth movement (by contrast, other Japanese animators typically saved time and money by only making a single body part move on a still image).

With a change in the background or a speed ramp in the action, the gaze of the audience is always pulled to just the right spot. There’s a reason artists have been paying homage by recreating Kaneda's iconic motorcycle slide for the past thirty years. Akira is such gift, and if you’re a fan, I highly recommend reading the manga series for more of it.

Films from Hollywood have an invisible set of guard rails to them. Generally speaking, the good guy always has to win- or at the very least if they don’t, the ending still can’t be too bleak. Today more than ever Hollywood plays it safe for the sake of guaranteeing a return since they can no longer generate a second windfall in DVD sales. It is a monetary art after all, and so mainstream films adhere to a ruleset to make sure their audiences don’t leave to theatre too uncomfortable.

Films from Korea don’t follow the same ruleset. Films like Old Boy (2003) show the full scope of the human condition without holding back. So many of Old Boy’s images live in my mind rent-free: the octopod, the snapped toothbrush, the photobook. It’s an incredible story of loss, loneliness, and the circle of revenge. If there was any film I wish I would rewatch for the first time, it would be Old Boy. No other film has made me feel quite as much.”

Thank you so much, Ryan, and congratulations on Bark.

Bark is available to stream on ARROW and, if you haven’t seen it yet, you should drop what you’re doing and watch it right now. If you would like to see more of Ryan’s work, Memento Mori, which he co-directed, is also available in ARROW’s Sharp Shorts collection.

Old Boy is also available to stream on ARROW in the UK and Ireland.

Shawscope Vol. 3 2f2b1k https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/list/shawscope-vol-3/ letterboxd-list-54277440 Wed, 27 Nov 2024 05:05:17 +1300 <![CDATA[

Before Hong Kong's mightiest film studio mastered the art of the kung fu film, Shaw Brothers hit box office gold with a very different kind of martial arts cinema, one that channelled the blood-soaked widescreen violence of Japanese samurai epics and Italian spaghetti westerns into a uniquely Chinese form: the wuxia pain.

With their enthralling tales drawn from historical myth and legend of sword-wielding (and often gravity-defying) noble heroes, the wuxia films housed in this next instalment of ARROW's popular Shawscope series demonstrate the sweeping stylistic evolution of the genre, from the righteous stoicism of the late-60s Mandarin period, right through to the wild-and-weird anarchism of the early-80s Cantonese explosion.

The iconic One-Armed Swordsman trilogy, directed between 1967 and 1971 by wuxia cinema godfather Chang Cheh, made household names of stars Wang Yu and David Chiang and set the gory template for many of the films to come. Contrary to Chang's tales of loyal brotherhood, many wuxia films focused on female protagonists, three very different examples of which we see next: Ho Meng-hua's The Lady Hermit, with the great Cheng Pei-pei (Come Drink with Me) as a virtuous swordswoman called upon to stop a vicious warlord; Chor Yuen's scandalous Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan in which the titular lady of the night masters every deadly skill she can to get revenge on those who enslaved her; and Cheng Kang's all-star epic The 14 Amazons, in which Shaws' finest starlets play the real-life women of the Yang dynasty, avenging their fallen menfolk in battle.

Next, Chor Yuen adapted several beloved novels by consummate wuxia storyteller Gu Long to the big screen, four of which are collected here: The Magic Blade, Clans of Intrigue, Jade Tiger and The Sentimental Swordsman, all starring the redoubtable Ti Lung. As kung fu overtook wuxia at the box office, the genre evolved into unexpected new directions, with its chivalrous knights-errant replaced by conflicted antiheroes, as seen in Sun Chung’s breathlessly exciting The Avenging Eagle and Boxer's Omen goremeister Kuei Chih-hung's fatalistic masterpiece Killer Constable. Finally, just when it seemed the wuxia film had nowhere left to turn, Eighties excess reigned supreme in the special-effects-soaked, fourth-wall-breaking fantastical delights of Taylor Wong's Buddha's Palm and Lu Chun-ku's Bastard Swordsman.

With all-new exclusive restorations and hours of insightful bonus material, if you thought the previous two Shawscope collections showed the Shaw Brothers at its strongest, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Vengeful ghosts returning from beyond the grave, young women with supernatural abilities, investigative narratives, a terror of technology, and an ominous aura of urban alienation and isolation mark the wave of horror and mystery films that emerged in Japan at the turn of the millennium, collectively labeled as "J-Horror".

Remastered from the best available elements and alongside a host of new and archival extras, J-Horror Rising presents seven of the genre's most distinctive titles.

In the ghostly pastoral horror of Shikoku, a young woman returns after many years to her rural birthplace, only to find her best friend from childhood has died by drowning when just sixteen. The dead girl's mother, the local Shintoist priestess, has embarked on the region's famous pilgrimage - but why is she walking backwards?

The aftermath of the devasting Kobe Earthquake of 1995 creates fissures in the already fractured mind of a high-school girl in Isola: Multiple Personality Girl, allowing an unwelcome intruder to set up home in her head and leaving a volunteer worker with psychic powers to determine which of her personas is the fake one.

Shikoku also provides the mystical backdrop to Inugami, as a teacher from Tokyo finds himself drawn to a local papermaker, only to find himself the subject of some hostility from her extended family, who have long ties to the region and are rumoured to be the descendants of the guardians of ancient evil canine spirits.

Megumi Okina (Ju-On: The Grudge) plays the art designer for a horror-themed videogame in the innovative St. John's Wort, who is forced to confront her childhood traumas when her colleagues ask her to gather visual materials from the creepy gothic mansion she has inherited from her estranged artist father.

Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman features the titular predatory murderess drawn from urban legend, where it turns out home isn't the safest place for her potential child victims in this disturbing supernatural horror. A new craze for wearing ceramic masks sweeps the students of a high school, unleashing a wave of anonymous juvenile delinquency amongst the literal fashion-victims of Persona, which boasts early appearances from Battle Royale stars Tatsuya Fujiwara and Chiaki Kuriyama.

Last but not least, the chilling Noroi: The Curse adopts a pseudo-documentary format as an investigative reporter into paranormal phenomena is forced to confront horrors beyond his wildest imagination after learning about an ancient folkloric demon.

Ian Mantgani's gag-reflex-triggering, school-set short film, Nosepicker, is now available to stream as part of ARROW's Sharp Shorts.

A snot-based elementary school revengematic, Nosepicker is not one to watch while you're eating your dinner! We recently caught up with writer-director Ian Mantgani to discuss his Cult film influences and favourites.

Hi, Ian! Without spoiling Nosepicker for those who haven't seen it yet (WATCH NOSEPICKER IMMEDIATELY), it's a unique mix of school film, brilliantly disgusting practical effects and an unforgettable switch-up. What four films do you think influenced the film the most?

- Carrie (1976)
"It’s almost impossible to imagine making a school misfit revenge story now without thinking of this milestone. De Palma’s maximalism, wit and sense of the cruelly disturbing all blend sublimely. And when people asked if our lead character was supposed to be sympathetic or not, the idea of Carrie, a ’sympathetic villain’, was always the answer.

- The Blob (1958)
A splotch, a blotch, that’ll never be forgotten. The most iconic movie of its type as a killer slime film, as an allegorical B-movie and as a fun small-town ensemble.

- Apaches (1977)
The downbeat, dangerous grime of Britain in the 1970s was a flavour we wanted to infect our modern-day film with, which came in the form of uniquely disturbing dead-kids Public Information Films like Apaches and The Finishing Line, short-form TV horror fiction like Tales of the Unexpected and serious social drama like Scum.

- From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
This was always our reference point for taking a relatively slow-burning, relatively earthbound character story and instantly and unapologetically turning it on a dime into a fantastical monster extravaganza."

Those four in a blender, with a lot of snot, definitely equals Nosepicker!

What about your four favourite films of all time? What are those indelible all-timers for you?

- The Producers (1968)
"When I caught this on TV as a little kid, I’d never heard of it, I didn’t know movies could so energisingly and heedlessly lurch into such unexpected turns, or could be in such gleefully bad taste with such potentially sensitive topics and pull it off with such a sense of innocence. Somehow, even now, after seeing it scores of times, I still laugh and get the same rush from it as that first unexpected viewing.

- Psycho (1960)
Another one that never loses its magic. From scarring me deeply the first time, it’s now become a perverse comfort viewing - seeing its locations again feels like revisiting places deep in the mind, and I can always count on the film to thrill me with its extremity, move me with its characters and engage me with its craft.

- Sullivan’s Travels (1941)
The first Preston Sturges I saw, and the filmmaker’s film, skewering the pomposity of the artist with affection, championing the value of entertainment without undue hokiness, and dancing joyously through crackling dialogue and low pratfall.

- The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988)
A profoundly moving film to anyone weak of will, which on some level is most of us; a great parable about the persistence of human frailty and the possibility of divine grace."

Nosepicker is now streaming on ARROW.

Carrie, Sullivan's Travels and The Legend of the Holy Drinker are available to buy on Arrow Video Blu-Ray.

Director Sam Fox’s films have an unmistakable style, full of bright psychedelic imagery, and populated by characters thrown into ever-increasingly bizarre, hilarious and horrifying situations. Her latest short film, The Blue Diamond, stars Cult film legend Barbara Crampton, and her two previous shorts Bad Acid and Fck’n Nuts are both available to stream instantly on ARROW.

Sam kindly agreed to talk to us about the films that influenced the unforgettable Fck’n Nuts , as well as her fave four movies of all time.

Hiya, Sam! You have directed many fantastic short films, including Bad Acid and Fck’n Nuts , both of which are currently streaming on ARROW, and the forthcoming Blue Diamond featuring Cult film legend Barbara Crampton.

Can you tell us four films that influenced Fck’n Nuts ?

When conceptualizing the look and feel of a new film, I watch movies not only to inspire shots, lighting, performance, etc, but also to inspire what not to do... how I can re-create the same feeling differently or bring my interpretation to an idea that’s already been done.

Dario Argento and John Waters are always a go-to because they balance the tone of horror/comedy exceptionally well while also very differently. For instance, in John Waters' comedy, Polyester his characters' behavior is so brutally disdainful, the film verges on horror, whereas in Argento's horror film Deep Red, there lies a comedic element due to the absurd physical brutality brought onto his characters. When they die, you can't help but laugh. Both films use color, costume and set design to enhance the world they create, as do I.

Fck’n Nuts leans toward comedy more so than horror, but I wanted it to misdirect and convince the audience otherwise. For that, I used stylistic lighting, set design and post-production editing and sound to give a Texas Chainsaw Massacre edge and suspense.

Beetlejuice encapsulates the overall visual and tonal vibe of Fck’n Nuts . The film is over-the-top, eccentric, silly, scary, and visually stunning, but all those elements are there to accentuate the story of a girl who doesn't belong, especially within her family.

And what about your favourite films of all time? What are those beloved besties that you cherish, and made you want to make movies?

My family is fuckin’ nuts, hence the movie title… and so when my mom played me Rosemary’s Baby at age 5, of course it was an instant favorite. The color, psychedelia; the character's of the Castevets reminded me of my grandparents. It’s no wonder I got into making horror films.

When I was in high school, I did everything I could to make myself unrelatable to my friend group. Growing up, my sister who was 8 years older, introduced me to a world of film and music that was edgy and much more advanced.

I’m an avid reader and I seeing an impressionable man at the mall wearing a Clockwork Orange tee. Instead of opting for the film, I bought the book and attempted to read it. As a 15-year-old, it was beyond my comprehension of English, especially being written in a language mostly made up, but I discovered that Kubrick made a film of the book and somehow I found access to a DVD. It blew my mind. It was the first film that made me realize I wanted to make movies.

Around the same time I saw Apocalypse Now. It’s one of those films that I can watch over and over again and am still completely awestruck. I’m drawn to psychedelia in art and film and the acid scene is still one of the most stunning cinematic masterpieces I’ve witnessed. To me that movie is a perfect movie.

I was a HUGE Fosse fan after seeing Cabaret and wanted to see everything he’s ever done. Something about the man fascinated me. I fell in love with the fact that one could make a musical that was so darkly disturbing, emotional, experimental, and all the meanwhile, have the most incredible tunes. Let’s just say, I was NOT a fan of musicals until Bob… and then Phantom of the Paradise of course.

I soon discovered All that Jazz which you have to buy on DVD, for some reason no streamers distribute it. I don’t cry, I am a bit robotic when it comes to feelings but boy oh boy does that film make me feel every single emotion. It makes mortality real. As an artist, it hits hard on every factor of being creative and it is my number 1 go-to for inspiration.

Sharp Shorts Starter Kit with Julia Marchese 461642 https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/list/sharp-shorts-starter-kit-with-julia-marchese/ letterboxd-list-51218161 Tue, 10 Sep 2024 22:26:16 +1200 <![CDATA[

Julia, you directed the short film adaptation of the Stephen King story 'I Know What You Need" (now streaming on ARROW). What four films influenced your short?

1. Phantom of the Paradise

The idea behind my Stephen King adaptation, I Know What You Need, is a 70's after school special meets Brian De Palma. I worship me some 70's De Palma (and I can always aim high, though I know I will never reach his genius!) - so this was the film that I showed my crew as a style reference. The camera angles and split screens in this are so luscious, it's energetic and a complete masterpiece.

2. Carrie

Obviously aiming for De Palma with my Stephen King adaptation had a lot to do with the very first adaptation of King's work, De Palma's absolutely note perfect film from 1976. (Also the year my film is set.) This film is everything a Constant Reader and a film lover wants, it will always be the only adaptation of this book for me.

3. To Sir, With Love

I researched many 60's and 70's films for style references, and just when I was having difficulty crafting the important love montage in my movie, I watched this film and was amazed and inspired by the creative and fun techniques used. You never know what film will inspire you, and that's one of the best things about cinema.

4. sca, Baby

I watched a lot of after school specials before making my film, and this one, released in 1976, had the dreamy 70's glow that I was aiming to mimic. There isn't much connection here content wise, but the aesthetic of the film is absolutely perfect.

And what are your four favorite films?

1. The Breakfast Club

Having grown up in the theatre, all I need are people in rooms talking and lots of character development and I'm a happy bunny. The Breakfast Club is my favorite film because it proves all you need for a fantastic film is a great script, director and cast. It's John Hughes stripped down to the essentials - and maybe his best. (Fun fact! I was in a Los Angeles stage version of The Breakfast Club as Allison!)

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street

My favorite horror movie of all time, and that's saying a lot because I am obsessed with horror! This film is incredibly written, gorgeously shot, smart, creative and downright terrifying, because we all have to sleep sometime. Still my favorite FX in horror, and Nancy is my favorite Final Girl - and the inspiration for my podcast Horror Movie Survival Guide!

3. The Holy Mountain

Alejandro Jodorowsky is a tremendous filmmaker - his movies could only have come out of his head, and I love that about him. They are more than films, they are spiritual testimonies and complete mysteries. This film shows what cinema is capable of - and has one of my favorite endings of all time. I'm so obsessed with Jodorowsky that I have a podcast all about his films & comics - JodoWOWsky!

4. The Legend of the Stardust Brothers

All I want in life are cult movies - especially musicals - and this movie makes me so happy that it exists. Stupendously creative, brilliantly silly and in a world of its own, this flick needs to be your new party staple - it's a joy from beginning to end!

Thanks, Julia!

"As a fan of the genre I am excited that I can have The Woman and Offspring finally reach more audiences. It’s been fun producing and directing horror films all these years and I cannot wait for people to see my latest version of Offspring in 4k HDR. Horror is such a great world to explore all the dark and twisted ideas buried in our minds. I feel Offspring and The Woman definitely succeed at this.

Offspring is a special movie to me as I worked very closely with Horror Author and legend Jack Ketchum to bring this film to life. As a director it was my second feature film following my debut movie HEADSPACE. I never expected Offspring to lead to future collaborations with Lucky McKee and Pollyanna McIntosh but thank God it did…The Woman and Darlin’ both unique and special in their own way complement Offspring in completely fresh and different ways.

I hope you enjoy my selections from ARROW and can’t wait to Direct another horror film for the fans soon! It’s been an honor being part of this community."

Shocking and controversial, yet permeated with a dark, poetic beauty, the films of underground German auteur Jörg Buttgereit stand at the very intersection between art and exploitation.

In Nekromantik, the director's groundbreaking 1987 debut, nihilistic couple Rob and Betty seek to enliven their relationship by bringing a freshly-acquired corpse into the equation, with predictably nauseating results. 1990's Der Todesking takes a more experimental - but no less gruelling - approach, offering up seven vignettes of suicide, one for each day of the week, all prompted by a mysterious chain letter. In 1991, Buttgereit would return to the realm of corpse-loving with Nekromantik 2, which sees the young Monika torn between the two men in her life - the dorky yet doting Mark, and a rapidly-decomposing cadaver. Lastly, with 1993's Schramm, Buttgereit takes us deep into the deranged mind of a psychopath, charting the final days in the life of twisted sex killer Lothar Schramm.

Journey into the Japanese underworld....

V-CINEMA ESSENTIALS: BULLETS & BETRAYAL is available now on Blu-ray in the UK, the US and Canada. On Apple TV, and streaming on ARROW in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland

★★★★ “Gets under your skin”- Kat Hughes, THN

Writer and director DW Medoff crafts an innovative and chilling take on the haunted house formula with I Will Never Leave You Alone, a surreal nightmare where the psychological and the supernatural collide to terrifying effect.

After being released from prison, Richard is given an opportunity to restart his life by a mysterious company who offer him five thousand dollars to spend six days in a dilapidated house to cleanse it of evil spirits. His handler assures him this is only to put any potential buyers' superstitions to rest, and that he has nothing to fear. But Richard's sojourn is haunted by an inscrutable figure hiding in the dark corners of the house that seems to have a connection with his dark past. As his sinister neighbour's appearances become more frequent, Richard must confront the terrifying reason that sent him to prison and risk slipping into madness.

I Will Never Leave You Alone is a haunting exploration of trauma dripping with atmosphere from an exciting new voice in American independent horror.

I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU ALONE is available now on UK Blu-ray, on Apple TV, and streaming on ARROW in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland

"A road movie to hell.” - Steve Kopian, Unseen Films

Murder! Special effects? This time it's for real!

In the 1980s special make-up effects artists became stars, pushing the boundaries of what could be shown on screen as audiences around the world reacted with shock and delight. No surprise then that sooner or later they'd get a movie that made them the hero.

In F/X: Murder by Illusion, Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) is a special effects genius approached by the Department of Justice to fake the death of a gangster about to turn state's evidence. But all is not as it seems. Now someone is trying to kill Rollie, and grizzled cop Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) suspects him of murder. Unable to turn to the police, Rollie goes on the run with only his wits and his special effects expertise to save him. F/X was a smash-hit and a sequel was inevitable. Under the auspices of ace Australian director Richard Franklin (Psycho II), F/X 2: The Deadly Art of Illusion sees Rollie convinced, against his better judgement, to once again use his expertise beyond the silver screen, this time helping to trap a murderer as part of an NYPD sting. When lightning strikes twice and things go wrong, Rollie, his girlfriend Kim (Rachel Ticotin) and her young son Chris are all plunged into danger; only with Leo's help can Rollie keep them safe.

Beloved by a generation of movie fans and featuring two of the most charismatic character actors ever to grace the screen in Brown and Dennehy, F/X and F/X 2 are the kind of charming action-thrillers they just don't seem to be making anymore. Step back into a world of grande illusions!

F/X & F/X2: The Grande Illusion is available now on Blu-ray in the UK

In his own way he is, perhaps, the most dangerous man who ever lived!

It wasn't really the first film of its kind, but the western all'Italiana - or "spaghetti Western" - was never the same again after Sergio Leone's groundbreaking A Fistful of Dollars, starring Clint Eastwood in the classic role that made him an international icon.

A nameless stranger (Eastwood) rides into the Mexican border town of San Miguel and quickly finds himself in the middle of a bloody battle for power between two rival families, the Baxters and the Rojos. Cannily realising there's money to be made from playing each side against the other, the Man with No Name soon finds himself caught in the crossfire as the body count escalates, his only chance of escape a standoff against the Rojos' mercilessly cruel leader, Ramón (Gian Maria Volonté).

Leone's clever and contemporary inversion of Western archetypes was not only the first entry in a much-beloved trilogy, but the director's first collaboration with the brilliant composer Ennio Morricone. Now fully uncut and freshly restored in glorious 4K with an arsenal of new and old bonus material, the Man with No Name rides again like never before!

Play it Cool is a chic and erotically charged drama starring popular Japanese singer of the day Mari Atsumi as a college girl negotiating her way through the male-dominated hierarchies of Tokyo's seductive but treacherous nightclub culture.

Yumi (Mari Atsumi) is a pretty fashion student who shares a cramped home with her mother Tomi (Akemi Negishi, The Saga of Anatahan) and good-for-nothing stepfather Ryoichi. Tomi works at a local hostess bar and hopes for a better fate for Yumi. When Ryoichi violently forces himself upon her blossoming daughter, Tomi is not afraid to take action to protect her, an act which lands her in jail. Left to fend for herself, Yumi is taken in by her mother's former place of employment, where she finds herself fighting off the unwanted attentions of the men who swarm around her. Then one day, a rescue by handsome former lawyer Nozawa (Yusuke Kawazu, Cruel Story of Youth) from a vicious gangster seems to offer an escape into an altogether glitzier world, albeit one that turns out fraught with similar dangers.

Arrow Films is proud to release this little-seen gem by one of Japan's most highly regarded directors of the 1960s, Yasuzō Masumura (Giants and Toys, Irezumi), a filmmaker known for his social satires and powerful portrayals of women, as Play it Cool is released for the very first time for the home video market outside of Japan in a brand new high-definition transfer.

Harry Benson is a brilliant computer scientist. For three minutes a day, he is violently homicidal.

From the director of Get Carter and the writer of Jurassic Park comes a chilling techno-thriller. George Segal is... The Terminal Man.

Harry Benson (Segal) is a brilliant computer scientist who suffers from seizures that induce blackouts and violent behaviour. Undergoing experimental surgery, electrodes are implanted in his brain to detect oncoming seizures and stop them with an electrical impulse. But the pleasure centre of his brain becomes addicted to the stimulus, triggering seizures at shorter and shorter intervals. If they become continuous the blackouts will be permanent, and Benson a homicidal killer.

Much ired by Terrence Malick and Stanley Kubrick, Mike Hodges' film of Michael Crichton's novel is an unnerving slow-burn masterpiece long overdue for re-evaluation.

Welcome to the endangered species list.

From Renny Harlin, maximalist director of Die Hard II, Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight, comes Deep Blue Sea, a shark-infested action-thriller where everyone is on the menu.

At an isolated research facility in the middle of the ocean, a team of scientists, led by Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), are working on a cure for Alzheimer's by genetically altering the brains of sharks. When a shark escapes and attacks a pleasure boat, the company sponsoring the research threatens to pull its funding and sends corporate executive Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) to investigate. McAlester has just 48 hours to prove the value of her work, but her experiments have made the sharks smarter. No longer happy to be injected, prodded, and caged, they begin to turn the tables. As a freak storm causes chaos on the surface, making it impossible to leave, the facility is flooded and the scientists must fight to survive against the rising water and the hungry sharks that now swim freely through the corridors.

Embracing action, horror and suspense with a knowing sense of humour and pushing them all as far as they can go, Deep Blue Sea is an adrenaline rush of pure entertainment presented in a brand new 4K restoration approved by director Renny Harlin. Come on in, the water's great!

Own DEEP BLUE SEA on Limited Edition 4K UHD in the UK, in the US and Canada. Also avaliable on Blu-ray.

Friedkin's serial killer thriller out now on 4K UHD 5p132c https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/arrowvideo/story/friedkins-serial-killer-thriller-out-now/ letterboxd-story-35681 Wed, 2 Apr 2025 22:55:17 +1300 <![CDATA[

Al Pacino is Cruising for a killer.

Legendary director William Friedkin brings together Al Pacino, the 70s New York gay scene and a searing punk-rock soundtrack in this one-of-a-kind serial killer thriller, finally restored to its long-unavailable original theatrical version in 4K.

New York is caught in the grip of a sadistic serial killer who is preying on the patrons of the city’s underground gay scene. Young rookie cop Steve Burns (Pacino) is tasked with infiltrating the S&M subculture to try and lure the killer out of the shadows... but as he immerses himself deeper and deeper into the underworld, Steve risks losing his own identity in the process.

Taking the premise and title from reporter Gerald Walker’s novel, Cruising was the subject of great controversy at the time of its release and remains a challenging and remarkable movie to this day, with Pacino’s haunted lead performance as its magnetic centrepiece. With hours of brand-new bonus features, including never-before-seen material from the deepest recesses of the studio archives, you’ve never seen Cruising like this.
