Nicole Kidman’s hat does so much work. I love this miserable movie and only kinda wish it didn’t feel so familiar to me.

This was a lot more enjoyable before I read The Jakarta Method, which renders the second half of this movie pretty hollow. The romance that is supposed to be the heart of it is barely that, but Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver are so good that you can forgive it. I also appreciate that the only real character is a male half Chinese dwarf with incoherent politics played by a tiny white lesbian. I love how Australians are the same but different.
