Sean Baker returns with a hilariously played manic screwball thriller that integrates control, wealth, and class through the Cinderella meets After Hours and Uncut Gems New York nights fairytale of sex worker + stripper Ani. She's swept off her feet by a zany and immature client who happens to be the son of a Russian oligarch, thus beginning what's essentially three movies in one: each act gradually dropping the upbeat frenzy that explodes onto the screen until it fizzles out…

A Complete Unknown

A pretty tight streamline of important folk songs and the eventual electric wonder that would topple them. Yeah, this eventually won me over. Mangold's obsessive toying with formulaic biopic tropes (minus the drugs and booze) pays off when the rug gets pulled from under those gawking faces — a hero-worshiping boomerang effect only seen in biopics — and then promptly shifts those same faces into grumbling, accusatory listeners at the penultimate Newport festival gig. Bob Dylan is still as mysterious and mumbly as ever. Thankfully Chalamet kills it. Those two hours flew by.

Imagine E.T but filmed in South Africa and starring a wrinkly ass looking teletubbie. Perhaps the best (and most incoherent) Spielberg knockoff of all time. I bet E.T. wishes he could conjure up Fourth of July fireworks via dance like Nukie can.

Rat Man

Not a sequel to the 1986 oddity Ratboy but instead a nasty, weird, and shallowly plotted piece of late 80s Italian horror—in other words, a schlocky riot! As much as it is exploitative, there is something so effortlessly fun about a bare bones set-up—here it literally introduces the rat-humanlike creature of Mousey (yes, you read that correctly) locked inside a cage, and then two seconds later, shows the cage torn open and vacant of a little human rat. Can't get over…

A vessel of John Carpenter gloss and shock. The Fog meets Assault on Precinct 13 meets The Thing, fizzling in a flimsy array of Carpenter claustrophobia. Cults, cloaks, and crosses (not to mention triangles); an illuminati-astronomical parasite honing to a drained abyss. Emergency-red brightness cascading on victims and heroes, drowning in an dissolute echo of dread. An urge to fight, run, and creep. A shitstorm of a night for the characters and the audience. A hell-bent creation of freaks and…

The Year is 2017: Ranked and Reviewed

The wettest kind of consciousness, percolating memories that flood with no specific significance, nor cascade with the true essence of meaning—they sit, stir, and rattle the brain with all of its attempts at explanation. Beckoning an existential gaze that beautifies the believers and the heroes—surrounded in a stream of fake electronic components and fake matter. To these wanderers, life is fenced in and forgotten, intact with their provisions and protocol—this is the future,…
