The Tragedy of the Victims of Police Violence is that it feels like a curse, a moment waiting to happen. Even when you want to start over, the lingering threat of your life ending haunts you. Oscar Grant was not supposed to die, but that’s what happened. He couldn’t escape it. They never would let him get away.

I’ve been thinking about the concept of Bleak Week. What is truly the goal of a fun festival that is dedicated to the saddest, darkest films cinema has to offer? I think the importance of this festival is the fact that we are exposed to reality. There is no escapism in these films. We are confronted by things that many of us do not experience yet we are aware of films are not only supposed to give you comfort, but they should wake you up And remind you how precious life is and how important it is to be aware that we all need help. Humanity needs one another to coexist maybe after watching some of these films you will come to the realization that the world does not revolve around you and remind you to check in on someone else. You never know what someone is going through until you ask.

Bleak Week shows us the worst of humanity to emphasize why we need the best of it.

Pain.

The gasps of horror from the audience when Flor’s village is found behind the house say it all. Harrowing isn’t enough to describe this film. An assault of the senses, especially on the big screen. I’m one for wanting a great director to continue making films as long as possible, but how do you follow this up? The answer: You don’t. If you make a film like “Come and See”, you have nothing to prove.

Olivia Williams kills in this.

Such a bleak, hilarious ending.

Beautiful people and places that are destroyed but never forgotten.

This is always been kind of a mysterious film to me because for whatever reason I could not anything that happened upon reflection. This was basically a first time viewing in many ways. A blessing.

Incroyable is all I’ll say.

Brady Corbet Q&As are always the best.

Getting to see one of my favorite endings of all time on the big screen was a treat. Rest in Peace Scott Walker, you were a real one. 

I got to meet Stacy Martin after the screening and she was delightful. She got a real kick out of us wearing the same color jacket. If I had a nickel for every time an actress complemented my clothing at a Q&A I’d have two which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice in a row.

“I feel like we should still be in Afghanistan!”

There were moments of where Tim Robinson looked like George C. Scott and I don’t know what to do with that information.

Wes’ most daring film? A film with some of his most blatant movie mashing with the core being “Mr. Arkadin”, Michael Curtiz sense of espionage adventure, and some splashes of Buñuel. 

I’m glad Wes can surprise me when I think I’ve figured him out. A lot of his most bold imagery and his quickest pacing yet. I couldn’t believe the movie flew by so quickly. 

For a filmmaker that’s considered out of his own time, this might have some of the most potent reflections on modern day capitalism. It’s like they say, films about the past tell us more about our current times. 

Benicio Del Toro will always be a great presence in a film. His face tells so many stories. Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera are also fantastic in the film. 

A bit of a surreal experience to see this in the Mission Street Alamo Drafthouse, itself looking like a Wes Anderson set, and then having Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston wear Stanford and Pepperdine apparel.

It’s interesting how they have the Rohmer gag in the beginning of the film as this feels like Arthur Penn made a hard boiled Rohmer film. A film about relationships, infidelity, and sexualization hiding past traumas and creating new ones. No one had a chance in this film.

A very jazzy score for such a bleak film.

Gone is the Ethan Hunt that was human but capable of overcoming the impossible odds. Now we have a Christ like figure that must defeat the Anti Christ that is AI. 

Such a mess of a film but a good one at that. The original cast still has what it takes including sharing the spotlight with the standouts of the new cast like Pom Klementiff, Tramell Tillman and Katy O’Brian. The submarine and plane sequences are incredible, some of the best in the whole series. 

The issues I had with “Dead Reckoning” are still here. While Gabriel has more personality than he did in the last film, it seems like they completely abandoned the whole concept of tying him to Ethan’s past with the only indication of the flashback amongst a sea of archival clips from the entire series. The Entity has some better character definition, but is never really fully utilized to its full potential as an antagonist.

BRIEF SPOILERS:

I feel like the way Ilsa was killed off was very anticlimactic, but could’ve been a great driving force in the sequel. Unfortunately, “Final Reckoning” feels like they’ve forgotten Ilsa was even in any of the other films. It’s so odd given how much they were building to a slightly wishy-washy romantic relationship with her and Ethan to just basically ignore her existence. 

I know that the connections to previous installments have existed since Brad Bird’s “Ghost Protocol“, but McQuarrie’s obsession to connect every dot just makes the story feel too convenient. Telling me Shea Whigham’s Briggs is actually the son of Jon Voight’s Jim Phelps is silly and adds nothing to Hunt and Briggs’ dynamic. 

END OF SPOILERS

When it comes to trying to wrap everything up into a neat little bow to make a faux ending to this series, I think that’s when we get the worst of “Mission: Impossible”. But when we stick with the great stunts and characters, we’ve grown to love, this is where this film shines the brightest. I really enjoy how much McQuarrie advances the craziness of his directing style with this film, but I hope the next films can go back to basics, and we can go back to having different directors for every installment.

It’s a solid movie even if half the dialogue sounds like a Scientology recruitment video. 

I was not very impressed with this film the last time I saw it. I still stand by my criticisms. Gabriel and The Entity are weak villains and Ilsa’s death is just lame. A lot of the CGI in this looks flatout bad. 

Other than that, it’s a solid “Mission: Impossible” film. McQuarrie finds a personality with his directing style even if not all of the quirks land. Action is a lot better than “Fallout” with the visuals meshing together better. Aside from the villains, the ing characters are better developed, Pom Klementiff’s Paris being the standout.

I am curious given how much course correction they’ve allegedly done with “The Final Reckoning” how Tom and Christopher will tie up the most eclectic action series cinema has to offer.

I don’t know. I was really into this when it came out but with some distance in rewatching this series, “Fallout” falls flat for me. “Mission: Impossible” was interesting because every film had its own vision. Whether that was successful is up for debate but you can clearly tell the distinct visions from De Palma to Woo to Abrams to Bird. Even McQuarrie had something distinct with “Rogue Nation”. Aside from some moments, “Fallout” falls somewhat flat. Weak characterization, reused ideas, and a predictable story just make this a very mechanical film for me. 

Also, this might just be me but this is a very ugly film. Rob Hardy is a great DP but making this look like “John Wick Chapter 2” strips away the charm of the previous analog aesthetics. I know this was shot on film with digital elements here and there but it comes off too glossy.

McQuarrie brings back a slick spy procedural sense to the series that’s reminiscent of De Palma but never quite having its own sense of personality. Nonetheless, the plotting and execution is great with the breakout role of Svenska Drottningen Rebecca Ferguson being a clear standout. I like how McQuarrie deepens Ethan and Benji’s relationship and creates the greatest Spy/Gadget Sidekick duo since Connery/Moore/Dalton/Bronson’s Bonds and Desmond Llewelyn’s Q.

I still don’t like the use of guns by Ethan, feels like he’s in less danger when he can just shoot someone and Tom’s fake beard will never not be funny.

This is probably the best transition from the opening to the title sequence in the series.

Tom and Brad’s love of cinema, specifically of silent cinema, is what makes this my favorite of the series. Even if I don’t think it’s the “best” per se, it’s so damn playful I can’t help but love it. People can criticize the villain but he’s no better or worse than villains in other masterpiece series like “Indiana Jones”. I love when “Mission: Impossible” is a series where weapons are a last resort and it’s all ing your wits and physicality. The use of malfunction in this creates incredible suspense that still holds even after a umpteenth rewatch. I wish they got to have more auteurs direct the rest of the series, people like Brad Bird brought so much to Ethan Hunt’s adventures, it’s hard to complain when we still get spoiled with the McQuarrie films.

A lot stronger than its reputation nowadays. The themes of a post 9/11 world Ethan has to fight in adds a lot more thematic weight than other entries in the franchise. The script by Abrams, Kurtzmann, and Orchi (RIP) fixes 2's biggest issue and not only returns Ethan back to who he was in 1 but expands by helping him find love. Phillip Seymour Hoffman rules, obviously. He tilts from deadpan coldness to moments of absolute fury. I hope more people give it a chance on rewatch because it really packs a punch. I hope JJ goes back to being as inventive as he was with this film.

I wonder if The Rabbit's Foot was inspired by "Kiss Me Deadly".

Maybe on its own, this is a decent movie with flashes of stylistic artistry. As a sequel to "Mission: Impossible"? Bad. I realized while watching it was the first time I'd seen these films since watching all the Bond films. That only emphasized the fact that this is just a bad Roger Moore Bond film directed by John Woo. I'm fine and open to the original conceit of this series being other directors could bring their own vision but it isn't worth it at the cost of the Ethan Hunt character which is completely botched in this film. 

John Woo is a good director but his guns ablazing style doesn’t work with the practical spy work the series would be known for. It goes too far with the action where it becomes dull by the end. Ethan is a lot less interesting when he solves his problems by just shooting them. 

Also, WAY. TOO. MANY. MASKS.

Thankfully they moved away but this is just a failure for the most part.

The motorcycle stuff is cool though.

Jack Nicholson made a whole movie about the plumbers and firemen JJ Redick was talking about.

De Palma’s most confident film and a great start to a fantastic series. Tom Cruise’s energy explodes through the screen, keeping a balance of calm and collectedness but still feeling the weight of the mission ahead of him. It’s incredible stuff to witness.

The biggest regret I have is having not seen this film sooner. This movie has everything, tractor jousting, Kevin Bacon swinging around a factory like a monkey, Lori Singer getting into a bloody brawl with her ex, Dianne Wiest giving a stirring dramatic performance, John Lithgow, and DANCING! How much was the glitter budget on this?

Isn’t all of life so grand?

When routine deteriorates, what else do you have?

A horror film about being a mother where the dread is encapsulated in finishing your chores early, leaving you with nothing but yourself, a frightening presence for Jeanne Dielman and one that I assume women are all too familiar with.

I liked this film when I first saw it in my early cinephile days but it’s grown stronger knowing Chantal’s films better and having matured in my film watching taste. It’s a soul sister to her short film, “Blow Up My Town”, where I wouldn’t be surprised if the kitchen was the same.

It’s a film that could be accused of plotlessness or “nothing happens” or as one poorly written clickbait YouTube thumbnail states in bold caps “THIS MOVIE HATES YOU!” All would be false. I going to see “Werckmeister Harmonies” and afterwards I asked Béla Tarr what he thought of slow cinema the term and his thoughts on the current state of slow cinema and he bluntly replied, “Slow cinema, fast cinema. It’s all the same.” He was right. “Jeanne Dielman” is a slow film but it’s gripping from the first frame to its very last.

One of the greatest casts ever? A movie made for the theater.

Yes, I did the meme.

But this time, I finally watched the Despecialized Editions. I wasn’t a full defender of the Special Editions, but I enjoyed select changes that enhanced the story. But the Original Theatrical Cut is just so much better. Not by a mile, by a lightyear. A lot more nuanced storytelling, an actual even tone, and even better pacing. This is the only way to watch “Star Wars”. Period.

The 4K Restoration of this on Dolby Vision is so beautiful it’ll make you cry.

By a country mile the best of the Dietrich/Von Sternberg films I’ve seen so far. Back when actors acted like feral animals.

I thought I was getting into your typical action chase film, and it is that on STEROIDS! So insane, my family and I were losing our minds.

A perfect film.

Despite the irony poisoned audience, this is still one of the peaks of 2000s blockbuster cinema.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox

   The reason I think this is the best movie adaptation of a book is simple. Dahl laid out a good groundwork of a story and Anderson built a castle out of it. The character additions, the animation, the expansion of the other underground animal communities exceeds the limitations Dahl had when crafting this as a children's book and Wes still keeps all that. It's a brilliant film.

2. Carol

   The best Patricia Highsmith adaptation.

3. Inherent Vice

   Adapting Thomas Pynchon is basically impossible, but if you're going to do it, "Inherent Vice" is the best one to go with aside from "The Crying of Lot 49". Paul Thomas Anderson does an incredible job at adapting Pynchon's novel. Some of his most devoted followers may call it Pynchon Lite but I think it's one of his best works, both on the page and on the screen.

4. Dune: Part Two

   One of the greatest movies ever. I truly believe that. Such an incredible cinematic spectacle, Frank Herbert would have been proud.

5. Dune

   A massive success in adapting a dense book without sacrificing the core of the story. More in Part 2.

6. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

   I grew up with this trilogy and never read the books. I listened to the audiobook and... I'll just say I'll stick with the films.

7. Blonde

   Dominik's film is divisive, I happen to be on the side of it being a masterpiece. Joyce Carol Oates' book is even greater. If Dominik's film is a snapshot of a phenomena of an actress, Oates book is an epic impressionist historical textbook into Norma Jeane. I think both are beautiful and I think in time, Dominik's film will get its due.

8. Killers of the Flower Moon

   I do love the classic police procedural structure to Grann's book but I also really like how Scorsese flips it with focusing on Ernest. This is one of the most affecting films I've seen. Grann and Scorsese's pieces on this story are both worthwhile and great. The perfect example of making an adaptation your own while not having to live under the shadow of the source material.

9. Poor Things

   Alasdair Gray's book is really creative and so fun in its story structure. The only thing that I hated about the book was its ending. The reveal that Max McCandles made everything up and everything we've read is not true is understandable with the themes of men rewriting women's histories but completely destroys the fantastical story we've just read. Thank God Yorgos cut it out, his adaptation is incredible. No disrespect to Lily Gladstone but Emma Stone deserved the Oscar for this film.

10. Call Me by Your Name

    Luca's adaptation feels even more powerful than Aciman's writing. It takes the story on a path of its own, creating a memorable story that justifies a cinematic adaptation.
