What even is this film about?
Modern and postmodern films (I pretend to know the difference) are quickly becoming an almost unparalleled favourite of mine when it comes to cinema. Works like Lee’s Burning (2018) - my first real introduction to postmodern cinema - and Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (2023) - even if it isn’t strictly modern or postmodern - have become something of obsessions due to the space that these films open up for audience interpretation. Everything feels so raw and realist in Poetry (I can’t really what Burning was like other than that it was epic). Very little is said explicitly, yet such an abundance of emotional weight and social commentary is right there in your face.

It took me a while to wrap my head around what…
