“Was that Sedgewick with his steamer trunk?”
“Who else?”
“I wish he was back in Australia with his kangaroos.”

Absolutely brilliant. You’d think starting this at 11 o’clock at night wouldn’t have been the best idea, but man, I was falling in love with these characters (and the actors that played them) for the almost 3-hour runtime that this whole film felt like it went for 90 minutes. I also have a newfound appreciation for ‘Chicken Run’ (2000). One of my favourite childhood movies that I will probably watch after writing this.

My first Steve McQueen movie, and although I’ve seen ‘Space Cowboys’ (2000), I’m counting this as my first James Garner film too. He was undoubtedly my favourite character in this as Hendley “The Scrounger.” Everything about this was spectacular. In the real-life event, six Australian airmen were involved: Reg Kierath, Albert Hake, Tom Leigh, John Williams, James Catanach, and Paul Royle. As this film ends with the words “this picture is dedicated to the 50,” this review is dedicated to the six.

This is still the first and only Spike Lee film I’ve seen (I’m sorry!) Goddamn is it great, though. I still think the opening with Alec Baldwin is just as hilarious as when I first saw it. As I’ve stated in my original review and first viewing of this, it’s not a subtle movie, and it’s definitely not a subtle message. The fact that Spike has complete tonal balance over the whole film is quite a feat. Juggling comedy, drama and thriller can’t be easy but it’s pulled off in this like it’s easy. Hell of a film.

Saw this inside the cinema on opening day and loved it. I will still never forgive you crybaby nerds for boycotting this because Rian Johnson made your favourite, nearly 50-year-old, boring, bland, and predictable character interesting again.

This is a great movie, and it deserved more love when it came out. So did Alden Ehrenreich. My girlfriend isn’t a huge Star Wars fan by any means, but I had to show her this (I really wanted to rewatch it in 4K UHD, so I bought it today), and she loved it. It’s a perfect movie for people who aren’t completely invested in the franchise but obviously know the name Han Solo. We could’ve had Disney churning these out every two years. Instead, we get CGI Luke Skywalker in Mandalorian shows that are obviously for streaming. Enjoy the inevitable future of uncanny valley in the future. It will be on you. I hate you all.

“They’ll never lose their faith.                                           They are too strong for you.”

I’m scared of the ocean and sharks, but what I really fear is evil that’s almost unexplainable and has been documented and warned about for centuries. Based on the real-life and well-documented 1928 exorcism of Emma Schmidt (with quite a few historically inaccurate details in the movie that, if left out, would’ve still made it work, in my opinion. For one, Emma actually being 46.) An exorcism film that actually puts forward faith, though? Patricia Heaton (who I know from Everybody Loves Raymond) and Patrick Fabian (who we all know from Better Call Saul). The cast is there, and the performances are too. If nothing else, watch it for Pacino, see him on the big screen in his first horror film (how many more chances will you have to do that? He’s 85.)

Sure, it includes the tropes that aren’t new in these types of movies and are novel for the horror enthusiast. Levitations, speaking in tongues, unsettling physical contortions, knowing things they shouldn’t. (All which are documented in this real exorcism.) I personally don’t want to fathom the possibility of people not giving this a shot and instead eating up the new Conjuring movie when it drops. That’s probably the reality, though. IP, baby!

I’ve wanted to watch this movie for a while now and believe me I have avoided knowing absolutely anything about it. Saw it at the store where I get my 4K’s from and had to pick it up. Today I saw it was available to rent on Apple TV for 99 cents. So I said why not? If I enjoy it, I'll buy it on 4K. If I don't, it cost me a buck. It's fine. Nothing groundbreaking IMO. Better than all four of the original films and I’m willing to die on that hill. I loved this. Rachel Zegler is amazing and is absolutely perfect for the role she plays. Especially with how everything played out with her. Trying to stand up instead of being a part of the tyranny that hates the oppressed and victimized? It’s definitely on the nose. Tom Blyth was fantastic as Snow. I’ve only seen his work in TV where he plays Billy the Kid. He killed it in every aspect they were trying to go for. Never thought I’d feel for Coriolanus.

I really don’t think J.J. Abrams is a great filmmaker, but I will gladly stand up and say this is the best movie he’s ever made. It might very well be the best Mission: Impossible film, too. Tense from the get-go, easily the best opening in the franchise. Ethan trying to juggle a personal life he wants so badly and to keep his work life separate. The real impossible mission of the film. Introduces Benji, someone integral to the franchise. Albeit I’m sure that was unknown at the time. Hoffman being the best villain this franchise has ever seen, with surprisingly little dialogue now that I’m watching it again.

“I needed to know just how bad the disease was in the real world, not just the lab. You were genetically splicing together strains of influenza to create a cure for all influenzas, but you were also creating a disease so terrible in Chimera, the cure would be priceless!”

God, this has a great third act. I do love that this is the only Mission: Impossible film set in Australia. At least we got one. Ethan Hunt is so James Bond-esque at the start of this too. Not to mention, in the first 30 minutes, John Woo seemingly just wanted to shoot Tom and aura-farm with him, which he succeeds spectacularly in. Tom never looks as good or as cool again, I fear. I don’t know, guys. The more I see this one, the more I warm up to it. A bunch of slow-mo and a banger soundtrack. There isn’t a bad movie in this franchise. An impossible mission in itself.

Wanted to watch something of Clint's I hadn't seen and just before I put this on I found half of an old t in my room. So Space Cowboys fucking ruled. The young Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones’ actors having to lip sync to their real voices at the start of the movie absolutely took me out. Clint and his gang walking into NASA all cool with their leather jackets to NSYNC, my god, what a movie. The kid going for a plane ride with Tommy Lee Jones’ character. All just so funny.

I think Robert Ebert said it phenomenally:

“2001 is not concerned with thrilling us, but with inspiring our awe.”

The opening to this film is what I’d call peak cinema. I don’t think I’ve ever written “peak cinema” in a review, as it’s a meme now, but if ever the time, it’s for this.

Those that know me and have followed me for a while know how much I enjoy Alec Baldwin’s work. I have all my life. I think he’s one of the greatest actors of his generation, and I personally think this was his best film in a long time. It’s also a Western genre standout. Absolutely phenomenal stuff here.

Rust is well crafted, has great visuals, and really stunning cinematography (yes, I will get to that.) All the performances were amazing. Baldwin plays the ruggedness of an old outlaw named Harland Rust spectacularly. Australian actor and Victorian-born Travis Fimmel as “Preacher” is maybe my favourite bounty hunter put on film in a long time too.

I wish this wasn’t a film shadowed in controversy or, more accurately, tragedy. A young woman died making this, and I think the end credits dedicated to her were heartfelt. Albeit some people have a stance that this film should never have been finished. That’s okay, but I’m not one of those people. I don’t think Halyna Hutchins would’ve been one of those people either. Looked forward to seeing this ever since it was announced in 2020. I’m glad it was finished.
I thought it was amazing. RIP, Halyna Hutchins.

I think I was too harsh on this when I first saw it. It’s a pretty fun time now looking back on how it all came to be. Rock wasn't kidding when he said “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.” He got everyone replaced, and the whole DCU rebooted, himself included, had the then CEO step down and finally killed the Snyderverse and had Cavill fire his agent. Not fun for him, but very fun for me. Here’s to James Gunn’s DCU. May it prosper.

(I wouldn’t be against Dwayne reprising the Black Adam role if his ego allows him to.)

As an Australian I know a little about American Football, I think Australian Football is much better and more exciting, although I did like to watch Brady (everyone did) and I the Eagles (go birds.)

Oliver Stone gives a high octane, gritty sports drama that I think even someone oblivious to American Football’s existence would enjoy. Anchored by stellar performances from an established and stellar cast (Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, James Woods, Aaron Eckhart, Matthew Modine.) It gives you that pulsating raw energy that captures the grit of the sport I think any sport fan can appreciate.
