I’m always here for a John Wick movie, and even a spin-off has my attention. Thankfully, this rules! There’s everything here that I love about Wick. Awesome action scenes, with varied stakes or styles of combat each time. Crazy locations, from wild neon nightclubs, to old timey gun stores, to a family restaurant in a mountain town. Well goddamn. He actually did it. 

Not only did he continue the incredible VFX work, making the world feel lived in and physical. There’s a shot of a reflective ship that made my jaw drop, and a shot of a worm that nearly made me wet my pants.

It’s an interesting experience to see your most anticipated movie of the year (in the biggest format possible) and come away entirely whelmed. Not over- or under-, just ‘whelmed’. It’s pretty great at several points, with some literally breath-taking action sequences. The characters are entertaining to watch, even if some of them have lost some of their shine.

But the movie itself is overwhelmed with something, and that’s its own legacy. I haven’t seen a movie in a long time…
