Robert Pattinson is such a gift, and this film is a showcase of so many sides of his acting abilities. ionate performances from gorgeous humans and aliens lead Mickey 17 into the promise of deep space.

Bong Joon Ho’s mastery of tone is still amazing – the shifts between action, science-fiction, drama, and comedy were nothing but entertaining. Blissful romance and everyday humanity persisting under the shadow of dystopia are ultimately what make this story work so well. I certainly sympathize…

“You haven't changed a bit! You're still the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world!”

Nothing quite like a movie that’s set in Los Angeles. This film is insane in a good way but I am probably insane for choosing to eat while watching it. I’ve always loved The Fly (1986), and The Substance is a love letter to that film in heart and soul and blood and guts.

“Help yourself to a hand grenade.”

The comedy of errors that ensues in the battle of bureaucracy vs blunt male capitalistic hubris. A solid, wacky, theatrical carousel of characters, as was expected, but with some excellent unexpected shot selections, camera movements, and gags. The cast in that carousel is a smorgasbord. Benicio del Toro is perfectly detached from reality. Scarlett Johansson and Rupert Friend caught my eye, of course, along with my ear to Alexandre Desplat. W.A. can always be counted on for an eccentric escape from the real world.

“And, you know, what is the national interest? I mean, it’s whatever interest they want it to be.”

The United States government is incomprehensibly and shamelessly corrupt. The imperialist christian ruling class that has amassed power over the last century could reprint their precious bible infinitely using all the blood they’ve spilled in pursuit of societal control.

A great, really well made documentary. Even if not fully definitive, it is shocking and effective in illuminating the systems that allow powerful men to blindly ruin lives in the U.S.
