The best running in a film and then 9 Memorable On-Foot Chase Sequences

If we’re talking about running from a mechanical perspective, I could only really think of one film. So the rest of the list is on-foot chase sequences where one or more participants are running.

I didn’t include Tom Cruise, because I don’t find his running weird. Maybe that’s just me trying to cover up my own goofy running.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
★★★½

The first and only film that came to mind when I think of running styles in a film. Robert Patrick turns up the speed on the “unstoppable pursuer” trope to another level, and runs like something other than a human.

Kung Fu Hustle
★★★★½

One big homage to the Roadrunner/Wylie Coyote shorts, it’s definitely the most visually unique live-action chase scene.

It also has more comedy in it then the remaining films combined

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
★★★

The chase scene at the end was practically why I say the the first hour-and-change of this movie as a kid. It also has the most memorable running music (though maybe a tie with that scene in Forrest Gump)

Cops
★★★★

Buster Keaton running from an army of cops is as to a foot chase what “The General” is to a train chase.

Police Story
★★★★

Jackie Chan chases a bus on foot, and runs down an extremely-steep hill In the process.

Honestly, most Jackie Chan films have a good foot chase and s should be on any list

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
★★★½

Horror movies are replete with people running, so there has to be at least one here.

A frantic final scene as everyone running from a man himself running with a chainsaw. It’s tense as hell

Se7en
★★★★½

Gotta love chase scenes in apartment buildings, and this one is the best simply because of the tension. The gun shots are deafening, and the shots themselves are as beautiful as they come

The Third Man
★★★★★

So, every list I make seems to have “The Third Man” on it, but it’s first in my mind for chase scenes. Whether it’s shadows and fast footsteps on the cobblestones, or the narrow suspense of the sewers, this film defines the thriller chase scene in silver screen eta for me.

Rocky III
★★★

Common sense would be to put the first movie, with its iconic running scene in Philly, which pioneered the use of Steady Cam.

However, this movie has Carl Weathers and Stallone running into a beach in slow-mo before energetically embracing. Stallone also runs weirder than all of Tom Cruises efforts combined.

Perfect Blue
★★★★★

Almost every Satoshi Kon movie has a chase scene, most which blur the lines of reality and madness. The final chase scene is the best example within his work.
