A perfect way to end 2024.

I ended this year with 328 films watched, very nearly an average of one a day. I believe that makes this my fourth most films watched in a calendar year, after 2020, 2021, and 2023 (in that order). I would have loved to hit 365, but, unfortunately, I think those days may be behind me as I am only getting busier. I managed to watch several films multiple times in 2024, including watching THE…

Wow, wow, wow. I had seen Autumn Sonata once before, and found it to be pretty strong but not my favorite Bergman, but that praise was felt tenfold after watching it projected on 35mm. This is now my favorite Bergman (Ingrid, that is; second favorite Ingmar maybe after The Seventh Seal?) and I can’t wait to watch it again. Truly one of the best films ever made and I can’t believe I missed that on my first watch. Rewatch movies!

Not quite the masterpiece I was hoping for (it was just a little too slow to be honest), but still an incredibly powerful story.

Still one of the most confidently directed studio movies in years. I can’t believe Ariana DeBose hasn’t been able to land another good role yet.

Third time in theaters (was finally able to see this in 70mm, making this the third unique format I’ve seen SINNERS in), and I stand by my opinion that this is my favorite film of the 2020s so far. I would pay good money to convince Ryan Coogler his next movie should be called SMOKE/STACK and it should be a prequel film that follows Smoke and Stack in the trenches of WWI and their exploits with Al Capone in Chicago.

I just started a new job and so I haven’t been able to watch as much as normal, but I was glad to check this out last night. It was great! The jokes almost all landed for me and while I do think it’s one of those films that may not age super well given how much the jokes cater to the current age, I am glad I saw it in theaters (in pink!) and it is another great 2023 theater experience in a year that is proving to be full of shared movie experiences.
