What a way to start Pride Month. I liked the animated bits of the movie, and the way the story unfolds as we learn more from every character. I find that the question of inheritance ends up being less important than finding out what happened between each person. It is sad but there are funny moments too. Didn’t wow me but I didn’t hate it either.

One of the best in the franchise if you ask me. So funny and there are deaths that genuinely shocked me even so late into the franchise. I do think there is a top 10 death here. We spend a lot of time with the family which was a nice change and also leaves you more invested in what happens to these characters. I loved all the homages to previous films and the Easter eggs. So glad Tony Todd is a part of this as well. Just love how these movies have such a sense of humor; so many moments where I laughed out loud in the theatre. I don’t think we acknowledge how great the needle drops are in all these movies, and especially so here. There is something to be said about families falling apart after a matriarch dies, which is turned on it head, but still applies. I also deeply appreciate a good timeline of events as well. Genuinely so happy with this and was not disappointed at all as someone who is a huge fan this franchise. And fuck that penny for real.

I’m not going to talk about the clear influences Leviathan has from other horror heavyweights like everyone else but this was a fun time. I really had to expectations and there was better body horror and practical effects than I was expecting. Most notably the faces on the outside of the creature were pretty unsettling. The crew are all mostly likable and they were a fun bunch to follow. Really did not care for Jones’ end and the music played in the last minutes really didn’t work for me but this was a good time.

“So who’s next?”

Genuinely such a good 2000s horror franchise that I don’t think gets its due. It’s my favorite and everyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t know how to have fun or stare camp right in the eye. Some of the deaths in this installment are crazier than I which made it so fun. You have to that death is a sadistic fuck that thinks it’s fun to torment these people. There is no other reason for one singular death to include an exploding computer monitor, a cut jugular, a house fire, multiple kitchen knives, a well placed fallen chair, and an explosion. It’s a movie that takes itself seriously which makes it more enjoyable given the ridiculousness and horrific nature of the kills. It also builds tangible terror in a way that few others can hold a candle to. Not many other horror flicks will have you staring at seemingly inoffensive objects wondering how you can go out only for it to be done a completely different way. It is deeply terrifying, and also one really funny cosmic joke, to realize that death has got it out for you.

“When did bullets ever set out to be bullets? They just are. Waiting, hoping to be unleashed into the world. To find their velocity.”

What a genuine joyride this biopic is. I don’t think I’ve seen one that has such an energy and vibrancy as this one with a staunch political core. Touching on indigenous language, the politics of music and stardom, colonization and oppression, and policing. Every scene feels injected with life and character. Every member of Kneecap feels so natural, I was convinced they were actors until the real footage at the end. Never do they feel stilted or unreal. It also so clear that they believe in what they say and their message of resistance. With the facts about indigenous languages at the end and their unwavering for Palestine. Language and culture and people should never be killed. Fuck polite expression and respectability politics when people want you to speak and say that in niceties. This made me a fan and now I’m going to stream their entire discography.

I really appreciate this retelling of Cinderella as one that harkens back to the darkness of the original Grimm tale. Viewing it as a horror story from the stepsister’s perspective is a really fresh take especially when you have to see what she goes through to attain beauty, that Agnes possesses, in the periphery. I enjoyed how we watch her become ugly on the inside, driven mad by unattainable beauty standards in a world that pits women against each other and time where many women’s livelihood what dependent on their male family/husbands. The body horror fits in so well with the premise and there are some really gross things in here but none that matched the nastiness that people have been saying about the movie. My expectations were a bit too high but I really applaud the movie for going there. I do think it is necessary to really examine the procedures that people go through for beauty through this historical lens, that bares the reality of body modification for everyone to see. I do wish that the entire movie was imbued with the fantastical-ness of Elvira’s fantasies and taken to a gross place. Lots of the past was nasty, and dirty, and weird. Wish it had gone there a bit more but nonetheless the movie looks beautiful and is really funny. Loving these body horrors about women recently! Watched this with my mom yall, and she had a good time.

Historical horror movies are so good when done well. Sinners is an exceptional entry into the sub-genre in that it tells a story that is closer to reality than fiction. In 1932 in the Deep South there were Black people, Asian people, Irish immigrants, Native Americans, and so many more people than what the common conception of this time is. There are cultural myths that pervade society and paint the past as one broad white paint stroke. I commend any work that challenges this notion, and Sinners definitely does this. The music in the movie works towards this as well, because it shown to be so deeply cultural and connective. It is historical and also informs the future, two truths that exist at once. THE scene of this movie, you know the one, was so beautiful and such a home run that I doubt any other movie will match it this year. It is also a movie that speaks to the ways that even those that have experienced oppression, can and will then turn and oppress and steal from others leaving the truth of their origins behind. Really important movie that I am glad was made.

The jokes come at you so fast at times it’s hard to keep up but it’s so so fun. The gore that’s thrown in is great as well. Some of the cinematography is absolutely beautiful and the shot of them running down the red lit road at night in their school girl costumes is my favorite part. Not to be a contrarian but this movie genuinely pissed me off. It’s not even that it’s badly done, or a bad story but it annoyed me. Most of the characters are assholes, and I like lots of unlikable characters, but these ones weren’t even fun. The concept is cool but it’s not something that is so out of the box original that it surprised me or interested me. I’m not even one of those people that complain about horror movies being about trauma too much cause if I enjoy the story it doesn’t matter. But Mia ends up a spirit on the other side of the hand…what was the pay off exactly? That she ends up alone in the end like she was so scared of? Okay? Why was Sue so adamant that Mia gave Riley drugs, like don’t you know this kid? I feel like there are too many ideas here and not enough of them come into fruition. Nothing pays off here in a way that really matters. Maybe I was not in the mood or it was the wrong day but as of now I didn’t enjoy this.

Almost everybody in this movie is hot, has the best outfits, and are sort of annoying but they are also awesome? The real strength of the movie is the way the friendships are portrayed. They are depicted with just a sense of realness that makes the movie a lot of fun. This movie revels in the gore and feels like a love letter to horror’s grossest aspects. There are parts that actually gave me kills this go around like when Olivia stops in the middle of the room and we get the shot of her from behind, and also when the demon at the end is revealed to be a Mia doppelgänger. So many beautiful shots too. The shed with the glowing red light and the necronomicon with the shotgun on the table. “I find myself constantly baffled by the way the world seems to carry on like there aren’t a million reasons to be shocked. To be, I’m…appalled.”

This really is a movie that was made to suit my interests. A movie about history and humans. I think this movie asks a lot of questions I also have about how we live through the world and our experiences in it. I find David’s quote, “My pain is unexceptional, so I don’t feel the need to burden everyone with it,” one that I don’t agree with. I simultaneously and contradictorily believe that we should not compare pain and suffering. There is no justice that can come from weighing one pain more heavily than another. Despite that, there are of course sufferings worse than I will ever experience. I do also think that your pain is not unexceptional because it is yours, that it is yours makes it important because you are you. It is almost selfish to believe that your pain is unexceptional because it feels as if you can rationalize it, understand it, and control it more than others. Is it honorable to idolize pain when there are million reasons to be appalled? I do not think we should compare pain but I do think we should absolutely acknowledge it. Recognize it. The most human thing one can do is share the pain of living with one another. History is but a million miracles that have coalesced into this moment we are living. History is a process of constant reconciliation of past horrors and modern life. I love the way this movie asks these questions and prods at history. How do we live knowing horrible suffering occurred to get you here? We must know the people and culture to honor what has come before. This is less a review now and more ponderings after watching. I stop saying this, history is everywhere frozen, “peeking out, waiting for us.”

This review may contain spoilers.

Such a sad movie and great representation of ptsd in vets. The way Andy dies in Vietnam and never returns is poignant. His soul was left there. I think this returning of Andy as fundamentally different: quiet, prone to violence, decaying, and monstrous works twofold to bring home the ptsd metaphor but also as a reminder of the violence that he himself perpetuated in Vietnam. It is a truth that he witnessed unimaginable violence as is seen in Darren’s death at the beginning of the movie, his cries turning into the whirring of plane engines as Andy is shot, but it is also true that he was there to commit unspeakable violence as well. “I can’t believe a soldier’d do a thing like that.” They are bred precisely for that purpose. To kill and maim and destroy, they are pawns of destruction who are left to rot after they serve their purpose in expanding the empire. “Boy, they really rip ‘em up, don’t they, Doc?” Once back they have to face the contradictions of their existence, and many can’t make peace with that turning to drugs or suicide as an answer. “Andy’s home. Some boys never come home.” I think the question left at the end is whether it is better to come home a monster or never come home at all. There is much more that happens here about family dissolution, expectations, gender roles, America post war, but I’ll save that for another day. I think this is well worth the watch.

“Because you say “I” for me.”

I still don’t really know what to make of this. Perhaps my expectations were too high or it just didn’t resonate with me and that is fine. Isabelle Adjani is genuinely the best part of this movie and she steals the scene in any shot she is in. I think there is a lot here to play with but the movie is purposely abrasive and that didn’t work for me. I love love loved the weird shit in here. That monster was gross and so awesome. If the movie had been from Anna’s perspective and the creation of that creature I would have loved this. As it is, this was a story about Mark and his perspective after a separation and I didn’t care for him at all. I don’t love stories about “hysterical, crazy” women and this feels like a scathing perspective on a women who used to be intrinsically attached to a man byway of marriage and is now finding herself in freedom. Maybe it was the wrong time for me and a rewatch in the far future will be more kind to my opinion on this film.

I usually like to go into movies as blind as possible to really get the experience in full and it usually is good as to not set my expectations too high or low but it really did a disservice here. I don’t like rape revenge movies, I don’t watch them, and I generally avoid them because I know they will get a bad rating from me. They aren’t for me. So I obviously didn’t like this one and I wasn’t ever going to. There are satirical elements here but it was a hassle for me to finish.  I didn’t know this was a Troma flick until about halfway through and I didn’t want it to be my first but you know. Anyways, I don’t know. Not for me. One star for the rat pack.

“Everybody get the fuck out!”

A day late but this fucking rules. I was surprised about the nastiness of some of the kills. Most of them happen off screen but the aftermath of what we see is wild and gross. The heart decorations everywhere and ensemble cast make this such a fun watch. Hollis is the best. An underrated holiday horror gem.

“I ran away but you didn’t even look for me.”

Yall I cried. Three times. It is so messy to be a teenager when the world makes no sense, and your frontal cortex is still being molded. It sucks to be 13 and we probably all sucked at 13. The verisimilitude in this movie to the time feels so engrossing. I was younger than Chris was in 2008 but the look of everything feels how it did back then. The deep greens and oranges of the world, and the brown and beiges of the houses. The cinematography is so so beautiful. The shots of the roads, and the sky, and Chris and Chungsing in the low light. I wanted to see this movie since the first trailer dropped and it didn’t play anywhere near me for its theatrical release but I’m so glad I was able to watch it now. I need to get rid only my phone and solely film on a camcorder. And ode to youth and mothers.

I’m trying to meet this movie where it’s at because I went in with unfounded expectations of this being nasty, gritty, and gross. Where did I get that? I have no idea. In reality this is a B movie that is a sort of absurd, dark comedy, horror about hair. I did think there is something to be said about femininity and rage here which is compelling but this movie really did nothing with. There are some really good moments in the movie like the scenes in Kondo’s apartment that were weird that I enjoyed. I would have loved and I did expect more of that body horror but the movie does not have much more apart from that scene. Hair would be such a good conduit for body horror but not much of that is found here. This fell flat to me because there seems to be three stories that don’t come together but do. The tone is so hard to place and inconsistent, because I’m not sure the movie knows what it wants to be. Despite this I can say I'm glad I watched it. It’s nice to watch something weird.

If it weren't for all the killing Camp Crystal Lake looks like it would be so much fucking fun. All the shots of the wind in the trees and lake are stunning and gives the movie a true sense of place. I also do think there are moments that are genuinely unsettling here like the freeze frame in the cold open, the hand on the shower cover in the bathroom, the close up of Mrs. Voorhees, and the slowmo of Alice at the end. The ending is also so sad in a way I didn’t expect, “But then he’s still there.” It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it sure does tighten the spokes. Overall, happily surprised by this classic!

What more can you ask for when you get three movies in one?

You first have an amateur film, then an indie horror flick, and finally a comedy meta documentary. This is so awesome. I didn’t have any problems with the first 40 minutes of this film like it seems others did. I found the absurdity funny and charming. The shaky camera work and saturation fitting. Like finding a YouTube video that you forever after watching. It made me want to make movies. Made me feel like I could make a movie. The latter part of the movie was so fun as well. It made me reflect on what goes into making all the movies I watch and how profoundly glad I am that there are people who would make a human pyramid to get the shot. I love da movies!

“Because your mind is so inviting.”

The last ten minutes of this movie are really great and I do wish that the rest of the movie was that way. The disorientation of place and time, and the monster! I didn’t think we needed to see it more but I think more paranoia could have induced in watching the movie. More people smiling, more of the faces in the dark, more scenes that we don’t know are real or not. The beginning and end of the movie really work for me but it lags and feels pulled too thin in the middle. I did really appreciate the dark humor and wish that had been throughout the movie as well. I just needed more. Loved the performances though.

Woah. This movie was atmospheric, cold, and awesome. I have not seen any of the previous iterations but I did really like this a lot. Eggers has proven to me to be a really great filmmaker and I adore his adherence to historical accuracy. Lily rose depp is phenomenal in this. The physicality she shows is amazing and you can feel her malady through the screen. Just grim stuff. The plague and the rats send the skin crawling.
