Flanagan leaves the horror genre behind here, but still sticks with Stephen King, so there's a measure of spookiness still at play within at times. The result is a drama that is a little sci-fi, a little fantasy, some dancing(!), and a whole lot of heart.

The film follows the titular Chuck and some of those in his orbit across three separate acts. The first centered around the end of Chuck's life. The second around a specific day in his adult life. The third around some important moments in his childhood. It is peppered from start to finish with a phenomenal cast of actors, from bigger names to beloved character actors to a slew of Flanagan's troupe of regulars.

It's a film that is often as moving as it is humourous, but one that still bears many of the flaws inherent in Flanagan's work. I haven't read the King story that this is based on, but knowing Flanagan, I have to assume he was faithful to it to a fault. There are some things here - particularly in the third act - that probably worked better on the page than they do on the screen. It's not enough to take the film down, but it does hamper things enough that the movie ends with less impact than it probably should.

If you're a Flanagan fan (and/or a King one), you're going to find a lot to love here. If you're not, I'm not sure how much you will get out of it. I myself enjoyed it, despite its flaws. This isn't another masterpiece like MIDNIGHT MASS or DOCTOR SLEEP, but I dug it.

Also, can we please get Mia Sara in more things? She is utterly delightful here.

If you loved the Philippou Bros.' last film, TALK TO ME, you're probably going to love this one. If you merely liked that one - as I did - you're probably going to feel the same way about this. Why? Because it has the exact same strengths and flaws as its predecessor.

From a craft standpoint, these guys are on point and have clearly grown as filmmakers since TALK. The shots and compositions are more interesting this time around, especially in of theme. Danny's script is also once again populated with interesting & compelling characters, all of whom are once more brought to life by a talented cast.

What holds both BRING HER BACK and its predecessor back for me is the horror itself. On the positive end, these fellas are great at ratcheting up both the tension and the violence across the first two acts of their films. Unfortunately for me, in both cases, all of that tension plateaus in their third acts. It doesn't go away, but it doesn't bump up to the next level either. They clearly have a gift for coming up with interesting new ways to tackle well-worn horror tropes, but I feel like they never quite take their concepts as far as they could or should.

As a result, I've twice now been left with a film that I merely liked, instead of loved. Still, they're good at what they do and I'll continue to check out their work as it comes. Perhaps they'll eventually knock one out of the park for me? Perhaps not. Either way, I at least know I am in capable hands and probably won't be handed an outright dud when I sit down with their work.

This was fun. Not amazing, but fun. Neither the best of the series nor the worst, this is still a crowd-pleasing return for a (perhaps undervalued?) horror franchise that's been absent for almost a decade and a half at this point. The Rube Goldbergian deaths are a hoot, as always, and the performances are equally entertaining. If you're a fan of these, you'll have a good time.

(On a slighly more bittersweet note, this is also a lovely swan song for veteran genre performer Tony Todd (RIP). The man basically gets to look into the camera and tell us all goodbye here. That was kinda nice.)

And so another big spy franchise ends, at least for now. Will this truly be the end of the line for the M:I franchise? Absolutely not. Will it at least be the end of Tom Cruise's tenure as its lead? I highly doubt it. I guarantee that within the next decade, he'll be back running around as Ethan Hunt again. But in the meantime, M:I will get a bit of a rest while Cruise goes off and makes some films with auteurs again. That's totally fine.

So how does this entry stack up? So-so. The setpieces are still fun (particularly the submarine & bi-plane sequences) and the cast is still game for all of the superspy hijinks, but the script is more of a mess than ever before. As a result, we end up with a movie that has a pretty terrible first act, but the film at least turns into an entertaining blockbuster action for the remainder of its runtime.

It will suffice for a "finale" for now, but it's a shame that the series is currently stopping on such a sloppy note. I have enjoyed every installment to at least some degree, this one included. That said, this is the worst one to date, finally suring M:I 2 in the disappointment department. It'll still get the job done, but its a fluff sequel that you'll likely forget by years end, submarine & bi-plane sequences aside.

Gets everything wrong that the first one got right. I'm now very hesitant to see the third one.

Had a good time with this one. It's far from amazing, but still a perfectly enjoyable meat & potatoes (& corn) teen slasher. Really dug the lead actress (Katie Douglas) and it's always nice to see both Kevin Durand and Will Sasso as well. If they end up adapting the second book, I'll happily watch it.

It took me a bit to get on this film's wavelength due to the particular style that it is aiming for. That said, once I did, I had a really good time with it. The script is its weakest element by far, as it is nothing more than a pastiche of lazily slapped together crime movie bullet points, but Evans shoots the hell out of the action and has a game cast. If you're expecting something akin to THE RAID films, you're going to be disappointed. This is more like if Woo had directed THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS. It's watered down Evans in every way, but watered down Evans is still better than most other action directors.

Occasional gorgeous imagery that it constantly undercut by shoddy production values and dialogue so heinous that the cast cannot overcome it.

A decently entertaining high-concept thriller from Landon. Not among his best work, but if you're looking for a breezy good time, it'll do the trick.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. While it's not perfect by any means, this is easily the best MCU flick in two years. A big part of that is having a totally game cast - pretty much all of whom are putting in good work - but much of it also boils down to the fact this is more character-driven than most of what we have received post-2019. I see some complaining about it not being loaded with action from start to finish, but it's just not that kind of movie. It's a film that opts for an emotional climax, instead of a huge gunfight or a big blue skybeam invasion. And it earns that, warts and all.

More of this please, and way less of the slathering of MCU hot messes that we've mostly been getting for the past 5 years.

A masterpiece. Full stop.

Could have used more white supremacists getting snuffed out, but then again, what movie couldn't do with some more of that? To paraphrase G.I. Robot, can one truly ire any sight that is devoid of deceased Nazis?
Jokes aside, this was right up my alley. Law & Hoult are excellent here, with some great ing work on display by Sheridan & Smollett as well. It's the sort of film that would have been a normal programmer 30 years ago, but now feels rare and more prestigious these days, at least at this budget level. Another winner from Kurzel.

Still not quite as good as the first one, but better than the second. Mind you, I'd rate them all on about the same level. These are dependably-entertaining kids movies that all manage to capture the spirit of their source material while also offering up a great vehicle for Jim Carrey to do his thing in a very big way again. In fact, this particular might be the MOST Jim Carrey movie in at least 25 years.

I caught the prequel a while back and thought it was decent, so I've been meaning to get around to the rest of them. I'm glad I finally did, as this was a nice surprise. While not one of my found footage faves, it's a pretty great little entry in the subgenre nonetheless.

While I take no issue whatsoever with people who want to take beloved children's icons and turn them into horror movie villains once they hit public domain status, this is just a pile of garbage.

Jack Quaid is in a LOT of movies these days, particular in this year of our dark lord 2025. This is not a bad thing, as Jack Quaid is pretty fun to watch no matter what mode he is in. NOVOCAINE included. High-concept action comedies tend to fall on the "miss" side of hit-or-miss these days, but I found this one to be a winner. Much of that has to do with its cast, particularly Quaid, Amber Midthunder, and Ray Nicholson. More of all three actors going forward, please!

"While the film around him here might be notably lesser in quality than his previous classics, Travolta is still putting forth the effort. His effortless charm remains intact. It is on this front and this front alone that High Rollers can be recommended. If you’re a big Travolta fan and simply want to see your favorite actor in something new, this might give you a temporary fix. Everyone else, however, is better off steering clear."

Shot with a small cast and crew for pennies on the dollar, it still manages to pack both an aural and a visual punch. The footage is a mix of more classic anamorphic cinematography and camcorder vlogs, giving it a distinctive feel. The sound mix is full and immersive. From a technical standpoint, it’s exactly what one hopes to be gifted when they sit down with an indie genre film: something that looks like it cost way more to make than it actually did."

Good god, Oz Perkins is on fire these days. His last two films (Gretel & Hansel, Longlegs) were fantastic and so is this. What a deliciously delirious slice of calamatous carnage from start to finish. Simply put, it's fucking GREAT.

Serviceable, but forgettable creature feature that's elevated (har har) by its central performances. Ends on a cliffhanger "twist" that anyone paying attention could have predicted from Act 1 onwards. That said twist is in service of a sequel that we'll likely never get made me roll my eyes.

I'm a Marvel apologist by trade, but this is just a pile of shit. I feel bad for the cast, all of whom deserved a better film to star in. Sorry folks, but ANT-MAN AND THE WASP has been usurped as the worst MCU movie. Hell, it's the worst MCU project in general. I would rather sit through WHAT IF? or SECRET INVASION again than to spend more time with this brick of cinematic vomit. I hope and pray to Death herself that we never get something from the MCU that's worse than this.

My opinion on the Star Trek films, for better or worse.

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

   A masterful pulp sci-fi adventure film and among the best the franchise has to offer.

2. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

   Honestly, if I could rank this one as a tie with Wrath of Khan, I would. Simply fantastic.

3. Star Trek: The Motion Picture

   The most cerebral and meditative of the bunch. Also perhaps the most visually stunning. I'll never understand the hate.

4. Star Trek Beyond

   Realistically, this is a tie with First for me, but I have given it the edge because...at the end of the day...I've always preferred the original crew to the TNG one. Its not perfect, but it's a lot of fun and the first winner of the new films.

5. Star Trek: First

   Picard gets his Wrath of Khan and it's pretty damn good. An entertaining mix of both Khan and Voyage Home, albeit with a touch of survival horror. The best of the TNG films.

6. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

   A wonderful showcase for the entire crew and every actor rises to the occasion. It's positively delightful from start to finish.

7. Star Trek

   This didn't hold up as well as it has in the past. The cast is good and I like the concepts, but the former are still a little awkward in their roles and the latter is knee-capped by script issues (partially due to a writer's strike). It's a fun film, but a messy, slight one.

8. Star Trek: Generations

   Its flaws cannot be denied, but for me, the good far outweighs the bad. The performances are great and the concept is interesting, which outweigh the middle-of-the-road direction and occasionally clunky writing. I'm in the minority on this one, but I don't care.

9. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

   A breezy and entertaining adventure from start to finish, but one that has never fully clicked for me like it seems to with most other fans. Still a good outing, however.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

    The only misfire of the films centered on the original crew for me. The concepts are intriguing and the cast is game, but they are undermined at every turn by a half-baked script, a supremely wonky tone, and the lack of a proper budget.

Two good movies. One "so bad it's good" movie. One able movie. Two outright bad movies. One extremely awful one.

Yep, I have no one to blame but myself for exploring this particular cinematic corner. I still kinda had fun doing it though. A sign of madness?

1. Kickboxer

   Grade A, cheesy '80s action entertainment. Not one of Van Damme's all-timers for me, but still one of his most fun outings.

   This should probably be ranked lower on the list, but it is so bonkers and mean-spirited that I can't stop thinking about it. Not a good film by any stretch of the imagination, but an entertainingly inept one nonetheless.

   My enjoyment of this one has cooled a bit since seeing it. It's a decent action programmer, albeit a mostly forgettable one.

   Possibly the most laid back actioner involving child slavery and prostitution rings that I have ever seen. Not a good movie, but also not a boring one.

6. Kickboxer 2: The Road Back

   Here's where I learn that Albert Pyun's early work is only fun if there's a fantastical genre element. Despite having some decent talent in front of the camera, this is an absolute mess.

7. The Redemption: Kickboxer 5

   It's a shitpile that wastes a good star, a good setting, and an interesting premise. AVOID.

'90s horror didn't suck. The decade was filled with plenty of really good-to-great entries in the genre. You just have to know where to look for them beyond the studio films (although there are a lot of winners there as well). The plan is to take a trip through '90s horror cinema, showcasing worthy films along the way.

Known classics and favorite sequels will be tackled from time to time, but the primary goal is to highlight those films that have often fallen through the cracks. There will also be little rhyme or reason to the order in which films are covered. I have a rather large list that I am working from and I do have titles partially planned out for the few couple months, but I'm also leaving myself open to last minute selections.

As for ranking? I'm not doing that. Instead, they will be listed in the order they are covered in, complete with links to the full pieces. This is a long-term project, so I hope at least some enjoy it.
