★★★½ Rewatched

The second half slips a little when the family splits up, but for at least the first half this is a terrific monster film blending classic 1954 Godzilla "the real monster is society, but the real monster is also a monster" storytelling.

The quarantine and government bungling is immensely evocative of the COVID lockdown.

It's not good sport to pick on undistributed indies, so I won't belabor the matter (I don't think I'd even post this review and rating if not for the fact the director is Jimmy Buffett's daughter and so not hurting for opportunities), but Adult Best Friends doesn't really have any major selling points. I suppose my favorite aspect is how lived-in the leads feel, right down to sharing names with the actors who are co-writers (and one of whom directs).…

A Christmas Carol

Richard Williams' 1971 Oscar-winning short is an astonishing adaptation, animated with beautiful, pencil-drawn grace and showcasing the creepier side of the story.

Some of the moments here have never been depicted like this before. Marley's jaw dangles, unhinged, with all the fright described in the text. The ghost-hearse races up the stairs. The Ghost of Christmas Past flickers and shapeshifts.

The sets are shadowy and starkly angled; the graves at the cemetery in Christmas Future sprout like a horrid fungus…
