What do we live for? The Adjuster is a film of people seeking to fill some void in their lives. People with lost houses depend on the titular adjuster and that need helps to fulfil him. But The Adjuster is about so many houses which have been burnt down, where domestic life within has been destroyed. The film's main couple are distant from each other, finding voyeuristic satisfaction elsewhere. The characters exist in their own little worlds, hidden from each other as they explore their sexual and emotional needs. They are a subversion of what society expects, using their work for their pleasure and not merely as a job to pay the bills. Their desires can be uninhibited, in a world that now classifies rather than censors the taboo. The Adjuster is an unusual film, a work about domestic fakery that lingers on mysteries about who the characters are deep within. The main house sits in an unfinished development, a wasteland of the modern world waiting for a reason to be. With a quiet score and careful filmmaking, The Adjustment builds a trance of the enigmatic. It's a strange and compelling work, one to contemplate and consider, because of and in spite of its emotional puzzles.

A dark and surreal western, El Topo exists as a burst of cinematic creativity. It is a spiritual film dominated by brutal, heartless violence. Everything shown is contradictory, with the story centered on a man seeking enlightenment from within himself whilst throwing out words to God. The fusion of East and West within El Topo speaks to a deeper sense of personal salvation that Alejandro Jodorowsky cleared wanted to explore. No matter the place, the soul of men yearns simultaneously for peace and violence. El Topo is playful and crude, but its vulgarity represents a spiritual debasement of man that brings cruelty and bloodshed. The film is one built on images from a perverse, masculine mind, where violence and sex are intertwined natural urges that give power and control when wielded. The final act of El Topo shows us civilisation in its depraved glory, finding the value of instead being an outcast. The film is therefore ultimately the story of a man humbled, moving from a killer who wanders blue skies and puddles of blood to a stranger caught in the imagery of protest. El Topo is a magical and mysterious film. Sometimes it lacks precision in its craft, but it has such a strong style and an abundance of intriguing ideas. It's grim yet weirdly endearing, a nightmare you don't mind dreaming.

🎵 "I like to make money, get turnt" 🎵

American Honey is an American companion piece to Fish Tank, another tale of a teenage girl forging complicated relationships in a difficult world. Andrea Arnold's cinema is so grounded in reality, and her focus on the female experience of poverty and heartbreak is always so detailed and distinct. Her camera is almost constantly in close-up, trapping us with people on the fringes of a wider world and finding small details that silently tell us who characters are.

American Honey is filled with images of an impoverished America. The characters live a precarious existence, where they are vulnerable and unprotected. Money is the nourishment they need, becoming a dominant part of their conversations, music, and chants. These are the youth on the wrong end of the socially immobile class system in America. The sweet honey of liberty doesn't help those who fall to the bottom. American Honey depicts humiliation rituals in the name of money, from eating worms to prostitution. Dignity requires capital.

American Honey is such a fresh piece of filmmaking. It has the formal control of tough European realist cinema but the vibrant expression of American youth. It is an epic, a journey through America extended over an excessive runtime. Plenty of pop and rap music plays, as the background music to everyday life. This is a film which feels alive, existing in each moment as not just an observer but a participant. It feels unscripted and messy, immersing itself in a vibe, seeking freedom in the banality of the Midwest.

At the centre of American Honey is a relationship which is both destructive and tender, built on painful jealousy and the sweat of sexual release. The film is not one of joy, implying a background of abuse in early scenes, but there's something more complex to American Honey emotionally. Life can be difficult and people can be unpredictable, but sometimes the world aligns just enough to make a moment worthwhile. The film ends without an ending, but like many of Arnold's films it is kindness towards an animal that represents a path towards some form of freedom. American Honey is a modern masterpiece, a film of people living in uneasy circumstances, told with such understanding. It is cinema as a representation of life. One of my favourites from the last decade.

Ballerina is a much more generic action flick than the primary John Wick films. It lacks the unique style and thrilling intensity which has made the John Wick films successful. Though Ballerina is not a bad film by any means. It has a lot of exciting action scenes which are directed well, filled with creative touches and dynamic camera movement. It's a fun film and ultimately satisfying. The biggest issue with Ballerina is that its story of vengeance is just a string of clichés attached to John Wick lore. When the film isn't doing action it's just clunky, and has little of interest visually. Yet, even though the dramatic beats of Ballerina don't land, it is a solid film. There's nothing bad about Ballerina, it's just a bland movie with above-average action. It's not the sort of film which will stick with you but it's entertaining enough to not regret watching it.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a fairly unspectacular animated film, but it concludes the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy in a satisfying manner. Hiccup now being a chieftain gives the film a fresh dynamic, as does a romance subplot for Toothless. In fact some of the romance scenes with Toothless are the best parts of The Hidden World, as they are often sweet and creatively told without dialogue. That stands in contrast to the romantic threads the human characters are saddled with, which are mostly dull and lazy in execution. As with the previous films I'm not convinced on the greatness of the How to Train Your Dragon series, with many of the usual issues still present, such as the inconsistent Scottish accents, repetitive humour, and overly sentimental storytelling. Though The Hidden World does have some strengths over How to Train Your Dragon 2, with a more terrifying villain and bolder use of colours. Yet as a whole How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is just average. It's not badly made but it's not particularly interesting.

Twenty Years Later is initially framed as a documentary about an unfinished film shot two decades before, but it turns into a deep contemplation of the scars that remain within a community and a nation. The original filming stopped in 1964 due to the Brazilian military coup and Twenty Years Later is about the changes since. From what we see the original film would have fit in with the neorealist and leftist cinema of the era, with non-professional actors performing a story about a man who united peasants to protest. Yet all this was crushed, by a dictatorship that violently destroyed attempts at class solidarity. Twenty Years Later spends a lot of time tracking people down, some of whom are now hiding or fearful of persecution or disavow what they used to be involved with. People change a lot in twenty years, especially in a time of turmoil. The most tragic element of Twenty Years Later is that ultimately it is a film about failure, of people who tried to protest and had their lives undone by politics larger than them. They are the defeated, the people at the bottom of Latin American society who were most punished by the brutal Cold War politics and foreign interference of the era. Twenty Years Later is cinema repurposed, taking footage which showed an unfulfilled dream and placing it within a larger social canvas to give people a voice. It's a unique work of cinema and a deeply profound look at a painful time.

I don't always find myself on the same wavelength as Wes Anderson's films, but The Phoenician Scheme is one I was really able to absorb into. The increasing formal eccentricities and precise craft of Anderson's latest films continues to impress me, moving beyond simple movies with a bit of quirk to something more dense and experimental within his expected structures. Often The Phoenician Scheme represents Anderson at his most strange, as a comedy intercut with surreal black-and-white scenes of the afterlife.

The first half of The Phoenician Scheme is very strong, filled with witty moments and some lingering artistic shots. Benicio del Toro gives a superb performance at the film's centre, playing probably my second favourite Anderson lead after Gustave H from The Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson frequently centres his movies on confident, talented men and The Phoenician Scheme does so in an extreme way, focusing on a powerful and arrogant man who is often required to judge himself in the face of death. In that sense the film is rather dark. However it is fairly obvious that The Phoenician Scheme will provide him some kind of redemption, through religion and family. Sadly in execution The Phoenician Scheme becomes a little clumsy, replacing the unusual pleasures of earlier scenes with a twist on a main character's identity, a ridiculous fight scene, and a sentimental epilogue. This is a film which starts strong but doesn't end at the same level.

The Phoenician Scheme is not one of Wes Anderson's best films, but it is still a very entertaining work. It is often funny and endearing, with a lead character going on an arc that has plenty of emotional meat even when the storytelling gets messy. It's a uniquely Anderson take on an espionage thriller and quite interesting in its mix of darkness and levity.

Cemetery of Splendour is such a peaceful and spiritual film. It exists in a dreamlike space, but has a beautiful naturalism to its scenes. Time is spent searching past lives and hidden palaces, within shots that stay in the present. The focus is always on the storyteller and their psychic connections to a world unseen. We only see the real world in Cemetery of Splendour, albeit one with mysterious sleeping soldiers, but there is a sense of the otherworldly even in scenes which are ordinary. The story concerns a woman looking after a sleeping man, and from there emerges mysteries, potential love, and tender friendships. As usual we feel the stillness of Weerasethakul's camera, which gives us patience while immersing us in this strange world. Cemetery of Splendour is quiet and sublime cinema, a work without explanation but so much to feel.

The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is a nasty, unpleasant work. It is about the brutal and violent racism which was part of the foundations of Australia as a nation. The film is set in the early 1900s, when the Commonwealth of Australia was founded, cementing the formation of an Australian identity separate from the British. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is a bisected drama, first following the lead character's mistreatment as a half-caste and then following him hiding from the law after a violent incident turns deadly. There is so much blood in The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, as it unearths pain rooted in both racism and retribution. It does a great job depicting the racial attitudes of the time in a naturalistic, unflinching manner. Some of the White characters are crude and hateful, while others patronise the Aboriginal characters by trying to "civilise" them. Despite a lot of intense imagery though, the film struggles to craft much momentum beyond its obvious plot beats. It's a little stale dramatically and sometimes meanders into being uninteresting. However none of that takes away from the core power of the film. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is still a strong statement on Australian history and a mostly compelling work of bleak art.

I had already seen all the shorts that comprise The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, but watching the anthology as a whole film solidifies how strong they are together. Like every anthology some sections are better than others. For me the opening short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, is the best and I also really like the final short, Poison. The middle two, The Swan and The Rat Catcher, are still good but they are the film's weaker stretches.

The style of the film is consistent across all four stories. The same actors play different roles, almost all giving deadpan performances, and there is constant narration from the characters onscreen. This method captures the prose and uniqueness of Dahl's work wonderfully. The movie is designed to look almost like a stage production. Alongside The French Dispatch and Asteroid City, Anderson's recent work has taken on a fixation with how we tell stories, how fictions-within-fictions can become meaningful to us.

Similar to how Anderson has previously used , Japan, and India to set his movies in a distinct location, this anthology brings Anderson's style to Britain. His precise production design suits the rather dry and dull existence of the class-entrenched characters. The first story is one of wealth. The second of British schoolboy bullying. The third depicts a man looked down upon for his profession. Then finally we get a tale of suspense that reveals itself to be about arrogance and colonial bigotry.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is an excellent collection of shorts. It feels more cold than a lot of Anderson's works but the look of the movie is stunning and the strength of the stories reveal they were well chosen to be adapted this way. As with many Anderson films I can't bring myself to say I really loved The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, but it contains some of his most impressive work and I respect the unusual artistic choices that define these shorts.

The Mission: Impossible film series began with three interesting and distinct movies, from De Palma's original with its older filmmaking language to Woo's bizarre mix of late 90s style to Abrams' attempt to add more personal stakes. Then the series peaked with a trio of excellent action-orientated spy flicks. The films appeared less stylised but the craftsmanship was excellent, producing movies filled with excitement and well-paced momentum. Now we have what seems to be a finale, released in two parts and built upon the approach of the previous three movies and yet ultimately disappointing in comparison. Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning still have a lot of things to ire and love, but the franchise was definitely at its best in the previous decade.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is a behemoth of a movie, larger in stakes and longer in runtime than any previous Mission: Impossible film. It feels massive, which suits it as a grand finale. It is also the heaviest of the Mission: Impossible films, with a lot of downbeat conversations and an enormous burden placed on the characters. It isn't completely free from jokes, but it doesn't have as much levity as previous films. On the one hand the tone of The Final Reckoning makes sense for the story at hand, but there is less joy to it and that feels a shame.

However, regardless of any tonal issues, the biggest problem with The Final Reckoning is that its story is mostly a mess. Just like Dead Reckoning it is crammed with plot threads and characters. On top of which The Final Reckoning throws in a lot of callbacks to previous movies, which mostly seem unnecessary. The film is long and the first hour is particularly rough to watch, as it consists mostly of repetitive conversations wrapped within convoluted plotting. The Final Reckoning does have a fantastically tense middle act set-piece and a serviceable finale, but there is a lot of self-serious bloat too. The film is essentially one mesmerising solo action scene, plus a bunch of other compelling action moments, accompanied by a lot of dramatic faff that never really engages.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is not a bad movie by any means. It's an action blockbuster with some stellar action. Yet it is also one of the weakest Mission: Impossible films, with not enough good scenes to justify the runtime. This franchise has gone in many directions, but this one doesn't quite work. It has incredible spectacle and breathtaking stunts, but the entertainment and craftsmanship doesn't match the high bar the franchise has set before. It's still worth seeing on the big screen but this is a lesser Mission: Impossible film even though it aims to be one of the most important.

Hallow Road is a gripping cinematic stress test. It is tense and uncomfortable in a remarkably compelling way. The confined story leads to lulls in the drama but it always feels like there is going to be another twist to come, yet nothing feels particularly forced so the momentum builds successfully. The film seems to misstep with a final scene which appears unnecessary but it does ensure there is a definitive key to unlock the previous scenes. Thematically Hallow Road is mostly about parents and their relationship with their children. It focuses on questions of parental responsibility and anxieties about the choices children make. Ultimately Hallow Road is a film about the doubts that gnaw away at parents. That makes for a great thriller setup, touching on real worries in a more spooky and intense setting. Babak Anvari proved himself to be a great horror craftsman with Under the Shadow and those skills are displayed again in the remarkable suspense that appears so natural within Hallow Road. This is a simple and effective piece of intriguing genre cinema. It's a concept movie with a skilful execution. Great stuff.

On that level Magic Farm is quite interesting and able to make its absurdity pointed. Though in execution the film is rather mediocre. It's visually creative and there's something comically enjoyable about the idiot characters embarrassing themselves, but the dramatic beats are all rather inert and quite a few scenes are poorly edited. I didn't think there was a need to remake The Wedding Banquet, so I went into this movie with some cynicism. However it charmed me, finding a way to keep many ideas from the original within a slightly different dramatic structure. While the film is still farcical and delightful, there is a longer list of serious subplots. Characters each have their own individual struggles to work through. I think that reflects modern US indie trends, not wanting to commit to just being a comedy interspersed with scenes of sincerity, but instead trying to always seem meaningful. Which seems quite annoying conceptually, but somehow succeeds. The Wedding Banquet is still funny and the excellent cast manage to balance the drama and comedy so well. There are six main characters, played by Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, Han Gi-chan, Youn Yuh-jung, and Joan Chen, and each has moments in which they shine. Given gay marriage is now legal in the US and there is an increased acceptance of queer lifestyles, the context of this film is slightly different to the original Wedding Banquet, but I think that ultimately enables this new version to tell its story in a fresh way. 2025's The Wedding Banquet is a nice update on a great movie. It finds a path to forge its own identity and contemporary relevance, whilst being very charming and enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised.

The film presents a seemingly incomprehensible maze of bureaucracy, sending people to different floors or requiring them to fill in different forms. Everything seems confusing, sometimes even to the staff. The system is unhelpful and dehumanising. Across its runtime Welfare presents many people and their stories, all revealing a different situation that somebody can find themselves in. The documentary is constructed in a way that allows each story to have equal weight, but it does build towards what becomes a finale. Rango works because it has a lot of fun momentum, coming from Gore Verbinski's dynamic filmmaking and eye for a good visual. The film has a fast pace, establishing setups quickly and not letting scenes drag on. The look of the movie is rather ugly and brown, but the characters and general design of the film is very impressive. It's a strange thing but Rango looks good without ever really looking nice. Harlan County U.S.A. is essential working class cinema. It is more than just a film, it is cinema as a tool of and solidarity. Harlan County U.S.A. is not just about a labour strike, it is about a community and a people. Mining was not just a job in Harlan County but an industry which had shaped the culture and economy of the entire area. So much of the documentary focuses on community unity, on workers stood together and ed by their families. The film spends a lot of time with the women of the community, following their role in standing up for the rights of workers. This is a place where the people felt like they had been kicked around, mistreated, and forgotten. Their struggle is important to , as the struggles of today are all part of the same ongoing battle against the capitalist class.

I'm not American but I'm from a part of Europe which was rapidly deindustrialised in the 1980s. When Harlan County U.S.A. was released, my grandfather worked in a mill in a industrial city, until it was shut down a few years later. In the economy which emerged after, my father worked in an office, though he has always been a trade unionist. Now I work from home, coding for a corporation, and even more detached from the community. As each generation es there are economic and cultural shifts, with those shifts leaving people behind. What will be the change that leaves me behind? Harlan County U.S.A. does a great job at showing people standing up for their community, in spite of challenges and setbacks. Yet it also unintentionally documents an era of change. The strike in Harlan County was a victory for the local community, only for the union a few years later to negotiate away what they won. The final scenes of Harlan County U.S.A. shows this, which in some ways make its an unintended depiction of the decline of union effectiveness and their increasing irrelevance to the modern workforce. The capitalists won, at least for now.

Harlan County U.S.A. is a stand for human dignity, for people to be able to live without being exploited. It is wonderfully edited, crafted without narration from montages that reveal large scenes from fragments of footage and mixed together from a variety of sources. Everything is told through the words of the subjects, who are so clear on what they want and often able to describe the politics and class consciousness of the situation in their own way. There is a clear acknowledgement that the government and establishment stand with the coal companies rather than the miners, and many interviewees distrust the union too. Yet they are brave enough to stand up for themselves. This is a film of guns, in pockets, in hands, in bras. Harlan County has a history of violent strikes, most notably in the 1930s. Within Harlan County U.S.A. there are gunshots fired in view of the camera, blood and brain shown on the floor, and a mother wailing next to her dead son. It took a man to die for negotiations to start and the strike to be resolved. That is true tragedy and yet it became an inevitable cost of fighting for a better life. The film shows the situation of the miners, many living with permanent health conditions and some employee housing not even having water or indoor plumbing. To want a better life than that is not unreasonable, yet to fight for it might be a death sentence. Which is why in some ways the most powerful moments of Harlan County U.S.A. come from people singing on a picket line. The local music is integral to the film, because it brings the community together and shows class solidarity in the toughest of times. Harlan County U.S.A. is ultimately cinema of solidarity and an important document of the ongoing fight for workers' rights.

"Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good ol' union
Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?"

Song of the Sea is a truly beautiful movie, not just visually, but also in its soul. It is a film about painful emotions and how we deal with them. Bottling them away only takes away what makes us who we are. Song of the Sea uses these themes in a wonderfully magical story derived from Celtic folklore. It is a film with a distinct cultural specificity and yet its emotions are universal. We can feel the way that grief has taken years from the characters. By the end Song of the Sea is a devastating work and its finale is unbelievably touching. Though the film's story does take a while to become really affecting, with the opening two acts being a bit haphazard. Yet ultimately the ending solidifies that Song of the Sea is a great film, one which celebrates the power of stories and songs to preserve memory and give life to the indescribable. It is a humble and stunning piece of cinema. So beautiful.

Extended Cut

For me, The Tree of Life is Malick's greatest work. He has made leaner and less flawed films, but the beauty of The Tree of Life comes in how it is both an expansive look at the nature of existence and a scrapbook of childhood memories. It is essentially a story about the death of a young man contextualised through the journey to get there, starting with the birth of all creation, and folded within the years of grief that followed. It is a circular film, spanning the 1960s to the present day, then jumping back to the beginning of time and following through to the end of the world and the life after. We sense our smallness within the universe, in the face of God, where we are merely following the path of time for a brief existence. The Tree of Life depicts the beauty of our world, of nature and humanity. Yet it also depicts an emptiness, of soulless modern living and domestic repression.

The Tree of Life emphasises a difference between the way of nature and the way of grace. These characteristics are embodied by a stern father and loving mother. The film follows the struggles of a boy to find his own morality and this is the bulk of the film, a beautifully fragmentary tale of a boy growing up. He is faced with the purity of the mother and the cruelty of his father, a complementary yet difficult contradiction to comprehend. He lives in a Christian household but God also gives no answers, speaking to us just through the world he has created. The Tree of Life is a beautiful collection of memories, with camerawork gliding through childhood in a story detached from time. It is the greatest American film of the early 2010s, a towering piece of personal, philosophical art. Our lives are small but the beauty of all which makes us who we are can never be measured.

Masaaki Yuasa's Mind Game is a burst of ambitious cinematic creativity. It is experimental and strange, built on fast edits that frequently switch animation styles between shots. The world here looks scribbled and messy, with Yuasa seeking imperfection rather than photogenic precision. Mind Game is like a journey through the human mind, following the moments in our past which have led to who we are now. It's also about the potential paths in life that never happen, that we miss out on. The common features of the human experience repeat endlessly. Mind Game is quite disturbed, with crude characters and many dark scenes, yet there is something quite touching about the joy that the character are eventually able to experience when they escape from their world. Life and its possibilities can so often be cruel but there exist unexpected routes to freedom. Mind Game is a fascinating and bold work of animated cinema. It is elliptical and confusing but so ionately chaotic that it seems to meaningfully reflect the pains of existence.

Most of the recent MCU films have been incoherent or filled with brainless nostalgia, but Thunderbolts* stands tall as a film that feels like it has some vision. It feels cohesive rather than overly tinkered with or upended by reshoots. It may be a low bar that a film should be made with a plan but in the modern superhero landscape that is refreshing. The arcs of the characters in Thunderbolts* all work to some extent and there's a tonal and visual consistency across the film.

Thunderbolts* may have seemed like a baffling movie for Marvel to make when their bigger superheroes still have stories to tell, but having seen the film it makes sense as a bridge to get the MCU from Endgame to its next round of Avengers movies. Which means it's good news for Marvel that Thunderbolts* is not a disaster. Part of its success is that the characters have very fun comedic chemistry. They are proper losers and that successfully distinguishes them from most MCU characters.

However I don't want to give the impression that Thunderbolts* is a brilliant film. It does a great job given the current state of the MCU machine but it's nothing particularly special otherwise. It's just an entertaining film with some solid character work. There are plenty of weaknesses, like political plot threads that disappear halfway through and a few prominent characters who are given little to do. Yet overall, for a slightly unremarkable MCU film, Thunderbolts* is a winner and one of their best films in a while.

The ant 2 is really rather ridiculous, which is probably a sensible direction for this series to go. However The ant 2 is mostly just functional. It has some fun moments but is fairly uninspired when it comes to character beats or action scenes. There's a strange mix of tones here too, as the film switches between lighter moments where the lead's autism is depicted playfully and heavy themes around people trafficking. The ant 2 is just messy really, with a lot of confusing threads and an inconsistent tone. My memory of the first film is hazy but I think I enjoyed it more. The core of The ant 2 is the relationship between two brothers and most of their scenes are entertaining. Unfortunately there's a lot of other, weaker stuff going on in The ant 2 and so the end result is quite mixed.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear has plenty of laughs and that's enough for me to like it. Sadly it's not as funny as the first film and the jokes-per-minute ratio is much less. April is bleak and difficult. It's one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've had in a cinema, filled with numbing scenes of pain that the film lingers on. It features both a stillbirth and an abortion, shown unflinchingly. Yet April is more than just these moments. It is about a tough week, of a woman doing important work over a few days as things seem to unravel. The point seems to be that these unfortunate realities exist and someone has to be there for them. The story is specifically about female suffering, of abuse and the physical consequences of childbearing. Our lead is left adrift and alone in her work and life, with the camerawork distancing her by placing her at the edge of the screen or leaving men out of shot in many dialogue scenes. Then, alongside all of this, April is filled with bizarre, dreamlike sequences. It's about the real world but doesn't feel quite real. There are some heavenly shots of flowers and the night sky. Even when shots seem static the camera wobbles slightly. Everything here is slightly off. April is something powerful and distinct, a slow and intense work of human suffering and life itself. Clocks tick, the days change, the world moves on and painful work is still required.

Neocolonialism and violence. Act for liberation. Violence and liberation. The Hour of the Furnaces is an attempt to make cinema that will change the world. It is the quintessential example of Third Cinema and aims to not just be a film but to be part of a revolution. It is both grandiose and humble, aiming high yet acknowledging it can only be one small part of a larger social change. Few films have such direct purpose and few are executed with such detail.

The Hour of the Furnaces is a film dedicated to Latin American liberation. More specifically it seeks to paint the USA as the region's largest enemy and pays tribute to Che Guevara in its opening text, citing Cuba as the only free Latin country. The film takes inspiration from American failures in Vietnam, seeing imperialism as beatable. The Hour of the Furnaces traces Argentina's history carefully, laying out a divide between the people and the oligarchy. Images of bourgeois luxury are intercut with animals being killed in a slaughterhouse. Argentina's high poverty rate is something the film is rightfully angry about and there is no doubt who it blames.

The historical context of The Hour of the Furnaces is important to note. It was made in an era of military coups, when ex-president Juan Perón was exiled. The film has a strong streak of nationalism and promotes Peronism as an ideology of the people which must be reclaimed and restored now it is underground. A large part of The Hour of the Furnaces chronicles Peronism and how Perón improved the economy while rejecting deals with imperialist nations. It's certainly a strong point-of-view, buying into a cult of personality around Perón. Though it also acknowledges his weaknesses, in how he didn't eliminate the oligarchy within Argentina. The film spends more time iring Perón than wider Marxist ideals, but there's a practical element to that which the film clarifies, explaining that the internationalism of communism garnered less in Argentina. The film seeks left wing unity, trying to place Perón within the context of a world under attack by imperialism, where colonialism still lingers. It highlights how left wing intellectuals are no longer part of the revolution, having become part of the system and opposing Peronism. Regardless of whether the revolutionary path proposed by The Hour of the Furnaces would have achieved what the filmmakers desired, it presents at the very least a coherent and ionate argument.

The Hour of the Furnaces sees cinema as part of revolution. It is didactic by nature because it is trying to bring about change. The film is filled with slogans of revolution and liberation. It opens with an intense, modernist montage, throwing us glimpses of the political situation underneath fast music and cuts to text that flies across the screen. The manipulation of montage is used to powerful effect, cutting between footage quickly and zooming in often. The film overflows with images of workers and revolutionaries. For a four hour documentary it is surprisingly living and musical, being a film of class consciousness which is urgent and eye-catching. It is a compelling documentary, which rarely loses its step. The Hour of the Furnaces makes clear that imperialism must be fought through violent means and shows the working class their place in revolutionary change. It deliberately leaves space for audience dialogue, aiming for the viewers to pick up the mantle and be taken over by revolutionary fervour. The Hour of the Furnaces is not simply a documentary but a film designed to be part of a movement. I wonder just how accurate all its claims about Perón are, but there's no denying that this is a striking and different type of cinema. Viva la revolución.

Warfare is an impressive piece of filmmaking but I struggle to find much purpose in what is shown to us. This isn't a directly political film in any meaningful way and actually feels quite contradictory. The final scene shows Iraqi civilians in the ruins of their house which has been needlessly destroyed yet the closing text of Warfare thanks the American soldiers "for always answering the call". The Iraq War was a particularly unjust and egregiously illegal conflict, but that is not the focus of Warfare. This is "just" a film about soldiers. Yet when I think about other films which bend around politics and history to focus primarily on the life of a modern soldier, like Black Hawk Down or Jarhead, I can see more of substance, about the mindset of soldiers and the bonds between them. Warfare is a brief, unsatisfying glimpse.

Warfare could have had some interesting metatext about the reality of the story being told versus the filmmaking fiction, but the film never dares to go that way. Instead we just get an immersive and supposedly accurate recreation of events. Which is fine, but is also a little dull and there's never a sense that the film is leading anywhere. Alex Garland does have technical ability as a filmmaker, so the sound design is excellent and every scene overflows with tension. Yet Warfare just never worked for me. It feels empty, so despite great performances and strong craftsmanship it just seems slightly pointless.

Music as life, death, and community. Sinners is an extraordinary experience, a work of cinema so in tune with its own flow. It is punctuated with abrupt cuts and gliding long takes but is constantly building cinematic momentum beneath an intoxicating score. It is fully immersive, grounded in historical context and a web of character work. Sinners is a film which is strong because it is completely gripping, turning human drama into supernatural horror without tripping over itself. Most of the vampire tropes are here but the packaging feels fresh and original. Sinners becomes a survival movie, akin to a Romero zombie flick and similarly smart enough to fully acknowledge human weakness. Characters make deadly mistakes but those mistakes exist within a world of pressure built by larger social forces. Sinners is partially about race, of Black spaces intruded upon and the horrors of being surrounded by untrustworthy human faces. Sinners displays some amazing genre work, building dark fears from established supernatural lore in a distinct, well-realised setting. The craft of the movie occasionally seems a little off, but the themes and emotions remain intact. Sinners is a powerful filmmaking statement from within the studio system and one of the finest horror films of recent years.

I saw the original How to Train Your Dragon twice as a teenager and never really understood the hype. So now I'm finally catching up on How to Train Your Dragon 2 and continue to be baffled.

There isn't really anything interesting to say about How to Train Your Dragon 2. Its story, characters, and themes are all unremarkable. But there are many other things I just don't get about these movies. The humour does nothing for me and seems to be trying too hard. The child characters all sound like adults and I don't understand the decision to have a handful of characters sound Scottish but then not bothering to apply that to everyone. Is it just because the Scottish accent sounds novel to Americans so they just wanted a few to be quirky? Or perhaps the insistence on casting celebrities meant accepting not all of them could do the accent? I know it's a trivial thing but it represents the way I just don't vibe with these movies. Everything feels a bit off and phoney to me.

The grand emotional scenes in How to Train Your Dragon 2 are so cheesy, with a character jumping in the path of certain death to save another, a dragon overcoming hypnosis through the power of friendship, and a long dead family member turning out to be alive. Nothing about How to Train Your Dragon 2 seems organic or elegant. It's just a collection of very generic emotional beats placed within a so-so story.

There are some things to like about How to Train Your Dragon 2. The villainous Drago makes a strong impression. There's a certain Miyazaki joy to the flying scenes. But on the whole I just don't see what others do in this film. I'm sure many kids have enjoyed it, but I personally think there are many superior films aimed at that demographic.

Cinderella is one of the most important films in Disney's history and it's easy to see why so many people have enjoyed it. While the story is thin, the real charm of Cinderella comes from the long stretches of ridiculous antics with mice and other animals. There's a great use of slapstick and animated silliness to keep the film energetic. The main plot takes a while to really kick in, which suits the film well. The time spent with Cinderella and her animal friends is where the heart of the movie is. The abuse Cinderella goes through is powerfully shown and occasionally surreal, making her a very sympathetic heroine who is stuck in a world she can't control. To some extent Cinderella is going back to the Snow White formula, with a young protagonist tormented by a cruel older woman, a prince set to whisk away our lead, and small friends who provide comedy and charm to the movie. Though I don't think Cinderella is as impressive as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Its structure is more padded and the limited setting doesn't provide as much visual scope. Still, Cinderella is a wonderfully quaint film, with some very amusing comedy and a lot of heart.

Zootopia is a fairly witty and likeable Disney effort, with a lot of energy. Its biggest strength comes in how it uses the personified animals to create fun gags and silly puns. The main plot is a police drama crime mystery, which doesn't strike me as particularly interesting or a great use of the setting, but it's fine. The main theme of Zootopia is to not judge others by their appearance and I think that's a good spine for a children's movie to use for its message. There isn't a lot I find remarkable about Zootopia but as far as computer animated Hollywood movies go, it's executed well enough to be significantly above average.

Lilo in particular is a great protagonist, defined by her loneliness and not powers or strength. She is an ordinary child and yet able to build a relationship with Stitch that gives them both hope. Lilo & Stitch is really rather gentle in its heart, despite featuring a plot full of violence. Beauty to be corrupted and consumed. The Neon Demon is my favourite film by Nicolas Winding Refn, with Only God Forgives in second place. It's a mysterious and beguiling work; perverted, twisted, and provocative in ways that intrigue me. I it being so intense to see in the cinema that I paid again for a ticket a few days later. While there is a lot of obvious allegory, of misogyny and self-hate taken to extremes, The Neon Demon is mostly satisfied to be a dark ride into the male perception of a ruthless fashion industry. It is about plunging us into a haunting experience, where neon pulsates and an intoxicating score leaves us disorientated. This world of fashion is a perfect setting for Winding Refn's aesthetics and fixations, allowing him to build a beautiful style that prioritises the image over the dialogue when it comes to telling the story. The final act reveals a Texas Chainsaw tale via an arthouse vision, which makes the previous horror movie stylings all dovetail towards a central idea that people and beauty are reduced to meat and props in our perverted world. The Neon Demon is a grim look at the currency of beauty and desire for male approval. It's slow-paced but builds some glorious momentum as it hurtles towards bloodshed and vengeance. It's a fucked-up vision but always captivates me.

Trenque Lauquen is a very structured film that embraces the unstructured. It is split into chapters and carefully delineates its story between the present, flashbacks, and characters retelling events. Yet all these stories within stories don't really lead anywhere. This is a film about searching, but not about finding answers. As it result it may seem unsatisfying but that seems to be the point. It's about obsession and chasing mysteries, not solving them. It shows people living in parallel to the past, repeating existences. It's about a woman who disappeared who was looking for a woman who disappeared. Trenque Lauquen is just a mystery that reveals further mysteries, right down to a mysterious final shot. The story of Lady Godiva is mentioned and the film makes the audience becomes a Peeping Tom, a voyeur to events. We witness and intrude but don't know what is happening. The second half of Trenque Lauquen goes in a very different direction to the first, but despite seeming disted the film is somehow still compelling. Perhaps the process of falling in love and discovering the secrets of the world are enough of a hook to make the film work however many tangents it explores. Trenque Lauquen is a series of stunning cinematic vignettes executed wonderfully. It's a vague whisper of a film and very beautifully made.

The Return takes Homer's Odyssey and strips away its fantasy. I suspect many people won't like that approach, but I found it surprisingly intriguing. The Return is about an old, traumatised warrior and its focus on the humanity of the tale gives it a strong emotional core. Odysseus is a broken man, unsure if he is worthy to retake the throne. It's a somewhat Shakespearean premise, though the film isn't poetic in its dialogue. Inside it's dry and quiet, existing in silences and striving to be grounded. Ralph Fiennes gives a careful, physical performance, appearing weak and yet strong at the same time. It reflects his character well, who has persevered while struggling to not succumb to doubt. The Return is a tale of men and war, with blood-soaked aesthetics to match. The pain this Odysseus feels becomes more visceral when you see the carnage he inflicts. He is a violent man alone and lost, which makes for a great character study. The Return is an interesting modern expansion of an old story. It has its own rhythm and caught my attention.

It isn't anything special, and a lot of the craft is workmanlike, but for a short and tense thriller Drop delivers more than enough.

Death of a Unicorn is a pretty bland effort. It just follow current trends of US horror movies with an indie edge, films like The Menu or Heretic, which have big stars, pretensions of depth, and horror which isn't too extreme. Nothing about Death of a Unicorn particularly stands out, and it's neither that funny nor very scary, which is unfortunate for a comedy-horror flick. Its themes are standard eat-the-rich politics, without anything new to say. Yet Death of a Unicorn is okay I guess. It may be predictable but it's not too dull and it es the time just fine. This isn't a film I'm ever going to rewatch or think about, but it was compelling enough to keep me engaged for the full runtime.

When the Levees Broke 234t4v A Requiem in Four Acts, 2006 - ★★★★½ https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/darrencb/film/when-the-levees-broke-a-requiem-in-four-acts/ letterboxd-review-858647437 Fri, 11 Apr 2025 04:24:39 +1200 2025-04-07 No When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts 2006 4.5 16468 <![CDATA[

Hurricane Katrina reaching New Orleans is probably the greatest tragedy to hit any US city in modern times. With over a thousand people dead and a million more displaced it seems incomprehensible. Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke feels like a vital effort to document what happened. It is an extraordinary work, filled with detail that does a great job focusing on the human centre of this tragedy, letting ordinary people speak. It is mostly chronological, capturing the immense devastation in the order it happened and then following the aftermath. Built from interviews featuring all almost perspectives on the disaster, When the Levees Broke is an extraordinary piece of documentary filmmaking.

One thing that is so clear in When the Levees Broke is the people affected felt left behind by the government. How could the United States let this many people die? We see corpses floating, there are montages of dead bodies. Bush and his agencies get a lot of criticism in the film, and their failure to save people is blood on their hands. The uncaring, uninterested, incompetent reaction of the federal government is damning. When the Levees Broke allows people to speculate on events, from the petty personal politics of the state governor and city mayor to a president unable to save lives due to amorphous ideas around states rights. New Orleans has a history of disaster and yet the various levels of government failed to prepare for another hurricane. In past disasters poorer areas were allowed to flood to save richer places and the same rugged capitalism occurred with Katrina, as the police prioritised stopping looting over saving lives. The most American response to disaster seems to be to let the poor people die.

When the Levees Broke is more than just a documentary on Hurricane Katrina. It is also a dedication to the city of New Orleans. Time is taken to focus on people, to hear why they were unwilling or unable to evacuate, to show us their fears as they had to consider their own death. The racial element of this tragedy is not overlooked, with the Black history of New Orleans a particular focus. The unique culture of the city is part of the film. The final act of When the Levees Broke looks at the months after the hurricane, of the vultures coming in and redeveloping the city by buying houses cheap as insurance companies deny claims. Much is made of how New Orleans may lose the very people who make the city what it is. America's underclass, mostly Black and poor, were the biggest victims of this disaster. Their families were separated, often deliberately by authorities, and their homes were destroyed. Many interviewees break down in tears. This is a documentary that gives a voice to the people and the final credits focuses on them to affirm that they are the centre of When the Levees Broke. No matter what discussions we may have about disasters it is most important to acknowledge the people who actually suffered and this film truly does that.

Finding purpose in what has been discarded. The Gleaners and I is a film of simple pleasures, of heart-shaped potatoes and being silly with a camera. Yet those moments reflect a wider philosophy on the way that things we may dismiss can actually have value. Most obviously The Gleaners and I is about people collecting food set to be waste, but on a cinematic level it is constructed from snippets of footage that could also be seen as worthless. Few films utilise the language of digital photography so well. Here it allows the presence of the director to become part of the subject matter, shaking the camera and drawing attention to her existence. This is a reflexive documentary, about artistic gleaning too, where filmmakers rely on their subjects and the legacies of past innovation. Though it must also be said that The Gleaners and I is more than an achievement in cinematic construction, it is also a reflection of life, of ordinary people gleaning food and their indirect subversion of consumerism. The film has a love for people and it therefore feels very warm. The Gleaners and I is brilliantly beautiful and a touching work of distinctive cinematic expression.

Save the Green Planet! is a twisted comedic work, filled with torture and trauma. It is touching on deeper themes about disturbing realities that can affect lives, but mostly it's just a darkly entertaining genre flick built on Korean cinematic eccentricities. It fits very neatly within the Asian genre space of the early 2000s, in both style and story. We get text bouncing off the screen and frantic, dynamic camerawork, paired with a modern story of conspiracy in a globalised world. In the latter half the film becomes more strange, with a 2001 homage and wacky twist ending. It's all enjoyably ridiculous, even if the subject matter is bleak. Save the Green Planet! is a wild and bizarre film, with a lot of creativity that it executes within an established genre template to decent success.

I ire Joshua Oppenheimer for The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, but unfortunately his dramatic work in The End is a bit messy. The film is long and quite sterile, leaving it to ultimately drift through some dull stretches. It probably needed more momentum and energy to really captivate me. Though The End is dealing with some interesting ideas. It's about rich and privileged people locked in their own world, denying their sins. The arrival of a stranger leads eventually to conflict and generations must contend with guilt from the past. There is a cynicism in how the characters are so often forced to cave in and accept the situation, because there is no alternative. Our real world works that way, with people unable to break away from the systems in place. That should make for a really fascinating film but it swings between intrigue and boredom rather than being truly compelling throughout. The End has a lot of potential but seems unable to deliver its premise in an exciting way formally or dramatically.

As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty is perhaps the ultimate montage of the meaningless and the trivial, yet it may also be one of the most meaningful works of cinema. It is constructed entirely from years of home movies, showing both major and minor events across decades of life. The film can seem random in its ordering of footage and transitions into voiceover or music. Yet this all makes it feels very authentic, reaffirming the film as a pure, honest, and heartfelt cinematic expression. The lack of polish, of stumbling narration and shaky camerawork, is part of its appeal. This is a stunning work of humanity, an epic humanist experience, where life has been captured as it happened and preserved forever. The nature of this type of filming is that it becomes a collection of memories, the camera a stand-in for Mekas' eyes. As I Was Moving Ahead may seem overwhelming in size but its thoughtful concept is thoroughly intriguing and moving in execution. It's a uniquely personal film and an incredible experiment.

Le Havre is on the lighter end of Kaurismäki's filmography. It really displays his humanist streak, dealing with topics like illegal immigration and terminal illness with a kind and understanding touch. Le Havre is a film of comionate people, displaying an optimism which I would like to be true. As expected the staging and style are carefully done without any pretensions. Le Havre is just a charming and magical little movie. It doesn't perhaps have the emotional complexity of Kaurismäki's best works but it is a delightful attempt to delicately discuss important topics.

Lights in the Dusk is possibly the bleakest Kaurismäki film I have seen. It's a despairing work, of a man exploited and denied any chance of redemption. The film has Kaurismäki's usual minimalist style but a lot less humour. It doesn't feel as pointed nor as emotionally effective as something like The Match Factory Girl, another depressing tale from Kaurismäki. Lights in the Dusk instead feels a bit aimless, lost in a sad story and unwilling to really subvert anything. Though it is still well made and decently engaging. The lead wants freedom from his life but is kept in his place by manipulation and systems that take away his dignity. That's a powerful setup for any story. Lights in the Dusk may not be one of Kaurismäki's best films, but it is still a strong work of character and vision.

Work until you die. La cocina follows a day of chaos in a restaurant kitchen but it goes beyond that to reflect the pains of capitalism. Our world has no god, just bosses, and those bosses are rich men, white men. La cocina depicts a painful immigrant experience, working long hours while dependent on a job just to stay hidden and seek legality. The pains of life, of dreams that can't be fulfilled and mistakes that can't be undone, are all shown in just this one day in a kitchen.

La cocina is maximalist cinema, filled with stylish asides where the screen changes colour or aspect ratio. Yet the film's long takes, confined sets, and monologues reveal its theatrical origins. It's incredibly well executed, finding a way to make the material compelling and mysterious even though it is about the ordinary. It is an unbelievably intense work, filled with scenes that stopped me breathing as panic set in.

La cocina is bold and unwieldy, in ways that won't appeal to everyone, but something about this really caught my attention. As a cinematic experience it is confrontational and exciting. Everything is tinged with despair but deeper ambiguities exist. We can all become the reject bathed in alien light, stuck in a new world and keeping silent about past pains.

Misericordia is a tightly crafted piece of intrigue wrapped in dark humour. It's a truly unpredictable film, with the eventual fate of the characters uncertain throughout. There's something so satisfying about how Misericordia plays, threading the suspicions of multiple characters through the ambiguity of what they know while letting their relationships take centre stage. The whole film exists in a weird moral uncertainty, of a dead man few seem to miss and affection available for a price. As guilt and lies tighten around the lead Misericordia becomes tense even when its antics remain playful. It's a brilliantly sharp work, with impeccable craftsmanship, and is a hugely entertaining diversion into small social chaos.

The Man Without a Past is a darkly comic look at Finnish society, finding both comion and cruelty. As per usual for Kaurismäki, the film is filled with deadpan humour and difficult circumstances. However there seems to be something rather pointed here, about a man struggling through bureaucracy and suspicion just because he has no documents or memory. He is treated as an illegal immigrant, becoming a member of society's hidden underclass. The Man Without a Past is excellently made, with Kaurismäki's usual style executed to perfection here. The film is an absurd descent into ridiculous situations but there's something so natural, moving, and meaningful to how it all plays out. It's a film about a man who is just a man, without identity. It's therefore somewhat universal in its depiction of humanity and as the film ultimately bends towards comion that becomes quite touching. The Man Without a Past is a superb piece of humourous, unfancy cinema. It's beautifully simple and very rewarding.

Drifting Clouds is a film of economic insecurity, about the people who suffer when the economy is weak. It is quite dispiriting at times, following the process of a couple both losing their jobs. What follows includes drink and a decline in mental health. Yet like so many Kaurismäki films Drifting Clouds finds hope in difficult times. While the story seems similar to a Fassbinder melodrama full of endless setbacks, Drifting Clouds finds an upbeat place to land its ending. It also has some comedic touches throughout, giving the tragic story a varied tone. Drifting Clouds is a moving tale of hardship and misfortune, but it provides more than just pain to become something more powerful.
