Just your average Criterion Dad here clicking the “John Farrow Noir” collection. Never heard of Farrow, never heard of this incandescently cynical potboiler. Charles Laughton is a media baron, Ray Milland runs his crime magazine. There’s a dead woman, but the cat-and-mouse chase around her body is rife with complication, cover-ups within cover-ups, attempted framings and betrayals. Actually reminds me a bit of the Denzel Washington classic “Out of Time,” that same great thrill of a man being tasked with investigating, exonerating, or condemning himself. Farrow really can direct — he does this mesmerizing thing with a henchman, played by Harry Morgan, who looms over the movie without ever saying a word. Thanks Criterion Channel!
