Tinker’s review published on Letterboxd:
I really don’t know how to exactly rate this thing, though that’s trivial anyways BUT what I do know is that this film was pretty fucking amazing.
This is Dracula Francis and I fucking love Dracula Francis!
It’s says it on the poster and in the title: a Fable.
It’s huge operatic Shakespearean cinema and it’s awesome. Everything and everyone is BIG.
Visually it’s absolutely astonishing. I was in awe many, many times.
I do think it hit a little lull for me at one point and I kinda know that point. It also could have been when the fuckin’ lights came up which I thought the projector crapped out but no, it was all apart of the immersion. I wish that didn’t happen but I got over that and the film landed nicely.
Look, we got a Q&A beforehand and Francis laid out what this was and I mean I kind of knew that going in. America falling like Rome and again A FABLE. So if that doesn’t work for you, then I guess you’ll hate it. It worked for me.
Aubrey & Shia are amazing in this. JON VOIGHT is really great too. Of course Driver too.
Look, if this is going to be Francis’ last film, that’s a pretty incredible capper to a legendary filmmaker. His Pledge of Allegiance in the end should be what’s taught now. A beautiful send off to a once in a lifetime filmmaker.
EDIT: fuck it I’m switching it to 5 stars. I woke up and it won’t stop dancing around in my head.
