Such a cool look into the Predator mythology and the history of humanity’s struggle to combat them. Huge fan of how they animated the film and showed it through the storytelling of an anthology up until the end.

Would’ve loved if each segment was its own film entirely, already a great basis to have every story especially since The Predators have such immaculate designs that work perfectly to animation.

Not a ton to say, just a generally great Predator film and something super unique to freshen the franchise. Can’t wait for Predator: Badlands.

Godzilla-thon

WORST tagline ever.

This isn’t even worth a whole review it’s just a awkward boring waste of time that has barely anything to do with Godzilla, I don’t even really mind too much with how much they changed about him, they just made him so BORING and UGLY.

All the characters are unlikable, it’s full of unfunny jokes, it has nothing to say thematically with nuclear weaponry or mass destruction or etc. (if anything it plays it super comedically), and so on.
The Elvis gag wasn’t too bad, smirked a little.

Probably would rather watch this over All Monsters Attack because while this is a boring mess, that’s a bad montage of everything I’ve already seen previously with a horrid narrative.

Ending with Diddy is crazy though, ends on a more monstrous note than it started with.

Godzilla Dies.
(Coolest Tagline Ever).

Godzilla-thon

Genuinely kinda amazed how much I enjoyed this, finally a Godzilla film that returned back to its roots and showed a deeply powerful and tragic story of how even when unintentional, Godzilla is a being meant to be a destroyer regardless of choice. So now even faced against the whole idea of a destroyer monster, he is the threat to the world.

Destoroyah himself stands out immensely so as that, just a satanic being of pure destruction that is the anti-Godzilla in every way. Made for such a cool plot as we get to see his progression into the ultimate form. This was with a really cool human plot as well with the best horror implementation so far, I really enjoyed the scenes of the civilians and military escaping the mini-destroyers.

Don’t even know how to describe it, just the most impactful and strong Godzilla film so far. Arguably reaches the same emotional height of Serizowa’s sacrifice with the ending showing that Godzilla will always return in some way, shape or form. Even the scene where Godzilla sees Junior sprawled out and dead is super emotional and made me feel bad for the monster that didn’t chose to be like this. The shot of Godzilla’s corpse melting down will stick in my mind for awhile, it’s one that is an incredible showing of how tragic this character is.

A tragic film that showcases the best that Godzilla as a character has to offer. Favorite of the marathon so far and a great time.

- Koji Shinjo

Godzilla-thon

I think the marathon is really getting to me because wow these are just the same movies. Kinda reoccurring problem with the Heisei era is how often it’s just packed with so many monsters and doesn’t really do anything interesting with them. I’m sure a Godzilla vs. Mogura story by itself would’ve been cool, same with (as it should’ve been) vs. Spacegodzilla. But the problem just is how it tries to juggle all of them and ends up making Godzilla irrelevant for most of the film. And even when he is there, this has honestly some of the weakest action sequences in the entire franchise.

That said obvious positives, great stunt work and effects as literally always. Noticeably the cinematography had some great shots like with Miki in the sunset. I didn’t mind the human cast either even if the telekinesis / telepathy stuff was a bit much. I think Mogura and Spacegodzilla were really cool visually but wish we got more out of them thematically or just as characters.

It’s just THE SAME after awhile, even if I don’t have a bad time it just really hinders the whole experience by not bothering to have something new. We’ve had space villains, we’ve had mechas, we’ve had Godzilla’s son, etc etc etc. Not a bad film just one that falls flat because of its previous entries and a very weak story comparatively to the rest of its era.

NOT AGAIN WITH HIS CHUD SON NO.

This one felt way more like a Showa film than any of the others, in both the positives and negatives really. Off the bat, still very well shot and has some amazing effects with some of the action for Super Mechagodzilla being the best we’ve ever seen. I also was really enjoying the first part of the story with this kinda dorky loser character in the military working his way up the ranks… and then everything else happens.

I thought Rodan was kind of lame and didn’t add a ton until the end, Godzilla’s son is the worst as always, and Godzilla just wasn’t very intimidating this time around again until the very ending. Then most of the story is just very uninteresting as it bounces back and forth between just moving the baby away from Rodan & Godzilla while we wait for Super Mechagodzilla to finally lock in.

Definitely not bad but just the clear worst of the Heisei era thus far, probably not even the best of the Mechagodzilla films because Terror of Mechagodzilla had a way more appealing plot to me.

Loved the part where as soon as Godzilla is downed the American guy gives a little fist pump for a two second cut.

Godzilla vs. Mothra vs. Battra vs. A Deadbeat Dad is kind of an awesome concept as far as human plots go.

Had a really bad day today so this was nice to help pick me up, honestly was just a lot of what I enjoyed about the original Mothra vs. Godzilla with a stronger plot and hook with Battra who is awesome.

Definitely not perfect with how you really could’ve done this story without Godzilla being involved and is really more of a side character until he accidentally solves the Mothra vs. Battra conflict, but I did really enjoy the Mothra side of things as a whole. Sets and action is great as always, Heisei era really does just nail everything great about the Showa era and implements more mature ideas, complex lighting & cinematography, and just generally more of what I enjoy from this series.

Also enjoyed the first part of the human plot a lot, wish they stuck with the Indiana Jones style for a bit longer bc it’s definitely more unique than the constant Bond tropes. I even still cared as it went on with the ex husband’s relationship with his estranged wife and child.

Has its flaws but the stronger parts of it make up for the weaker bits, definitely one of my favorites so far.

Bowler Hat Guy might be the greatest Disney villain and we need to start talking about it.

Still as charming and endearing as I , some of the gags and general story feel a bit messy but it hits way more often than not, especially the ending. I think the score stuck out to me more than anything else with how strong a lot of it is, makes the ending shine so much more than it already had done.

Doris is also a shockingly good twist villain with it more being a subversion of who’s the true antagonist rather than ‘good guy turned bad guy’ much like Disney would do after this.

Definitely could’ve been paced better but it’s just a really solid film and one of the better Disney films of the 2000’s.

This was really fun, big fan of the time travel plot even if it didn’t make much sense. The 1940’s scene were really emotional and well done with the dinosaur Godzilla.

Kinda awesome actually?? Outright the best shot film in the franchise up to this point with some great cinematography and set production, especially Biollante is a marvel visually. Does so much that I liked about Godzilla vs. Hedorah and cranks it to the max with the rule of cool overtaking it immensely.

Even the plot is pretty solid with a really dark and dreary feel that sets the tone as not just a dark Godzilla story but one where the government does truly feel powerless after the destruction of the soldiers trying to bomb Godzilla where there’s no big ‘OH NO!’ moment, it’s just silence and letting the fact they cannot fight off this monster sit in. The score adds a lot to this feeling too, I especially was a fan of the mysterious theme of Biollante’s last arrival leading into this destruction and chaos while they emerge from the ground.

Biollante is so great too, if anything my biggest critique is how little the plant monster is in the film and how kinda underwhelming their death was. Even with their limited screentime they still manage to have two amazing looking forms visually as a beautiful flower and a grotesque monster. Easily the coolest antagonist in the franchise so far, doubtful they’ll be topped anytime soon.

This was just a pretty great Godzilla film and a good time overall, absolutely one I would recommend even if someone wasn’t into the franchise that much.

Biollante in Godzilla: Minus One 2 I beg 🙏
It would be so cool thematically and fit with the Godzilla disease ideas they already set up.

Chronicle Director’s Cut

Need that sequel desperately.

Didn’t love it as much as my first watch awhile back, kinda noticed the pacing is insanely fast by the third act and feels a bit rushed. But with that said it’s still the best found-footage film ever and a super fresh take on the superhero genre with such cool visuals and creativity.

Andrew is a deeply interesting protagonist as you want him to succeed and have a good life so badly but the world just keeps beating him down and it’s almost miserable to experience in a way just to see his downward spiral. His relationship with his dad is a standout with how they don’t even attempt to show a good side to him, Andrew’s life is hell and this is just a glimpse of the short time we spend with what he had to go through. Steve & Matt could’ve fleshed out a bit more (especially Matt’s girlfriend with how much focus she has) but they’re still enjoyable and have their moments.

The whole movie is just a time capsule of the early 2010’s in the best way possible and I’ll always really love it for what it tries to do.

- Calum

Real, emotional and raw. The whole film is a beautifully shot showcase of what it is just to exist as both the innocence of youth and the crushing real world of being an adult. Paul Mescal is amazing as the lead and maybe has one of the most impactful endings I’ve seen of any film, it simmers with you for a while and hits as hard as it should.

It’s brilliant how much it speaks on mental health with so little actual dialogue on it as a real conversation much like how it isn’t much in real life as well. Sometimes it just comes out in a way you need to piece together yourself and sometimes you can’t be there for people who feel the same, even if you wish you could. It really makes me think about parenthood especially, how complex it is and how much we have taken advantage of them.

I don’t even know what to say what hasn’t already, it just is such a genuine and earnest film that does everything it should.

Ruined Under Pressure for me though, tragic.

I really liked the visuals, dance scenes, the cast and the good concept as a whole is really interesting. It mainly just falls apart with lackluster pacing, weirdly placed & read out dialogue, and the narration not leaving anything up to interpretation which kinda unfortunate because this is mostly a thought-piece.

For all the interesting ideas and philosophical questions they bring up, just as many of them go unanswered, are beaten to death from dialogue of the characters or are just outright explained by Ron Swanson (especially the ending).

But with that said, it stuck with me a bit after I saw it and gained more appreciation for everything except the issues I had before, with it especially just being a charming and fun film with a good theme at its center.

Same plot as Zane from Ninjago if you think about it.

Does mostly the same thing as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla but I thought the story with Titanosaurus, The Mad Scientist and his Robot Daughter to be a lot more engaging than other plots we’ve seen before. Definitely cheesy at points with the deceleration of love by the end but I ate it up, especially when she had to sacrifice herself.

The flashbacks of her death and surgery actually got me to feel a bit and were really well done, whole movie is just one of the best filmed and shot of the Showa era which is a nice thing to end off on. Especially with the same charming production, effects and suitmation. They really do a good job demonstrating Titanosaurus as a powerhouse, almost every hit sends Godzilla flying.

I almost cried when they were being mean to Anguirus and he bled out.

Definitely flawed but one of the more enjoyable human plots with the ape-men alongside some fun monster action. Way gorier than I expected because Anguirus gets MESSED up and so does Godzilla which was definitely a surprise. Besides them King Caesar didn’t really do a whole lot which is whatever, the plot kinda jumped back and forth around him when Mechagodzilla was the real focus.

That said I liked Mechagodzilla as an antagonist a lot, had a ton of versatility and cool ideas as a fake Godzilla running around to ruin his image and his body being completely ripped apart like machinery instead of a generic ‘then they run away’ type of ending they usually do. The Apes that control him aren’t a bad aspect either, definitely a weird one and a recycled concept but it’s so silly it hooked me.

Honestly didn’t have a lot of issues with it, just doesn’t do anything remarkable enough to be outright good. One of the more fun ones that I had a good time with. I can definitely see why they did another Mechagodzilla after this one to end off the Showa era.

Inspired decisions across the last few films and this one to have the climax hinge on “and then Godzilla can suddenly do this random power / move.”

That said holy reused footage, not even remotely trying to hide that. Human plot also extremely similar to the ones before but less engaging characters, the aliens trick the humans and take over stuff for like the fourth time.

Godzilla made sure that Hedorah was DEAD dead wow that was overkill.

REALLY surprised how solid this one was, not nearly as meaningful as the original film but this is by far the only one since to have something meaningful to say about environmentalism.

Genuinely is powerful just seeing the destruction of human and animal life Hedorah takes by just existing as a deformed and horrific-looking monster, a really intimidating force that drives the whole film mixed with the same solid effects and animation as always (if not the best so far). Limiting the story to just Godzilla VS Hedorah does wonders to the quality of their dynamic instead of throwing together a ton of monsters on-screen. Definitely one of the better shot too with how dark it feels at points to match the tone of the film opposed to the previous entries.

That said it isn’t flawless, I could do without the several singing scenes (minus the ending that was nice) and the human plot is still fairly uninteresting with lame characters. Also is weird that the ending kinda backtracks itself just do the exact same thing of Godzilla electrocuting Hedorah to death just to rip out parts of his corpse.
It just does a lot of really good elements that I can easily forgive its shortcomings.

10 Monsters VS King Ghidorah all at once yeah I wonder who was gonna win.

I liked the shot composition and set-production here a lot, really stuck out as more destructive and powerful on a huge scale than the previous movies since the first Godzilla. First time the monsters actively bleed too, makes it feel more violent and powerful when we see the damage Ghidorah is going through.

Didn’t mind the human plot too much either as a story for why they’re all here, just wish any of them were fleshed out characters. Lends itself to use all the monsters in a way that’s relevant to the plot which is nice. That said I probably would’ve liked if they just used relevant monsters than “ALL TEN!!!” Because like
1. Why is Mothra a larva again
2. Why is Kumunga helping Godzilla and his son who he tried to kill
3. Why is Anguirus just back now after like 20 years
4. Literally who are some of these people like Manda and Gorosaurus

It’s cool they got so many at once but it really makes the final battle lame when obviously Ghidorah isn’t standing a chance, most of them not even doing anything. Had a fun time but would have preferred making the humans actual characters than cramming in all these random monsters scattered throughout and the end.

I wish Godzilla killed his chud son.

Yeah this was boring and lame but I have some positives first:
- Kumunga was pretty cool
- Good practical sets and effects
- Suringly a pretty fun soundtrack
- Godzilla appears quite a bit and a decent chunk of the plot is around him and his son

Now what’s bad?
Minilla SUCKS!!!
I hate him.
Dumb.
Ugly.
Stupid.
Gross.

Also just by far the worst human plot and characters with such a nothing story going on. The giant Mantis monsters suck and did NOTHING against Godzilla and even Minilla.
Better than King Kong VS Godzilla but that is a very low bar.

What was that Giant Bird that fucked up Godzilla, what is wrong with it, how did it do that, why is it here. Oh it’s dead. Sleepy Godzilla.

It’s very very very simple and generic but I had fun, a goofy cast of characters in a shenanigan-filled plot and over the top villains with the monsters only popping up a couple times throughout.

Ebirah is probably the lamest monster I’ve seen so far with how little he matters in the grand scheme of things but I like his design and they do some cool stuff with him in the ocean, mainly him and Godzilla’s underwater fight. His theme is also really idk why it’s not very intimidating at all. Do just wish they used more of the character the film is named after.

Seriously why was there a giant bird.

Kinda the same as the one before but cooler with the Planet X plot, adds a neat Sci-Fi spy element that I liked. Fun human plot as well, I liked Nick Adams especially, he was a really fun character with his suave and cocky attitude amongst a lot of the kinda generic characters we’ve had for the past few movies.

All the monster stuff is good as always too, the set design for Planet X stuck out most with how this is a completely new environment for the characters that I wished they took advantage of more.

The part where Godzilla & Rodan argue over which one should apologize first might be real cinema.

Good worldbuilding with double the usual amount of monsters but wow is this the least interesting human plot so far for the first two thirds, really bogs down the whole thing hard with how nothing the Venus woman and general cast are.

King Ghidorah however was more than cool enough to save this, great entrance with the fire silhouette and him destroying a city just by flying above it is super dope. That goes for the other kaijus as well, I like how there just happens to be a lot going on at once like there logistically would be in this world. I also just like how higher in scale Ghidroah’s destruction feels than anything we’ve seen before, really makes him feel like a threat worth teaming up for.

It’s really silly and not especially my favorite but definitely a fun one.

Yeah I liked this one. Can’t say I really cared for any of the human stuff but the Mothra plot was cool and way more engaging than any of the other ones so far, has a ton of interesting background and story to it.

The sound-design too really stuck out for me this time with how heavy the focus is on Mothra or Godzilla’s theme to demonstrate the power one has over the other. And I also kinda dug how this is the first one with an outright heroic kaiju fighting an antagonistic Godzilla, Mothra is super cool and makes me wanna watch her own movies.

Honestly didn’t have a ton going on but I really enjoyed it and the more laid-back tone, second favorite so far.

Kong’s ass should NOT have won, that dickless ape got folded at almost every turn.

Accidentally watched the English dub before finding out it’s a bit different than the Japan version but looking at a few other scenes it doesn’t feel like it’s anything too different beyond some really bad voice acting.

Kind of a dumb and boring plot that doesn’t do anything very interesting but the practical effects are cool as usual and some of the human / kaiju physical comedy bits are a lil fun. A bit funny though how they just had to completely make stuff up like Kong getting a lightning boost (probably because it was meant to be Frankenstein’s Monster originally). But also fuck the blackface portion of the film, not a fan.

I respect how they kept continuity with Raids Again and this is truly what started the grander world of Godzilla along with the ‘Godzilla VS insert kaiju’ format but it’s just kinda not good for the most part.

- Shoichi Tsukioka

Godzilla-thon

Very disappointing how they already abandon the deeper meanings and themes by the second film but it still was a pretty solid time.

Honestly thought this was better shot, paced and edited than the original with more engaging lead characters but it came at the cost of a far lamer Godzilla who lost all intimidation and aura. You definitely can tell how rushed this was with how many times they just repeat the same or similar footage constantly because of how kinda nothing the story is and doesn’t have any cohesion between this and the first (notably when they just watch the first movie for a few minutes and fire the missiles to cause the avalanche for like six minutes).

That said the fight between Godzilla and Anguirus was cool and I liked the climax for Shoichi getting his revenge, just lacks a lot of what made the original so great. Overall a bit underwhelming but short and fun enough that I’d watch it again.

Appreciated this a lot more on rewatch, absolutely a classic for a reason with how influential it was to the kaiju and monster genres as well as pop culture as a whole. Having a great theme especially for the horrors of Nagasaki and consequences of the atomic bomb.

Didn’t care too much for the human plot, a lot of it is kinda rushed quickly and doesn’t have a lot of time to breath besides a few short scenes with Serizawa and The Professor. But at the end of the day Godzilla and the practical effects are absolutely the standout here, some downright incredible shots even to this day with great sound design / tracks as well. Making Godzilla’s foot stomps a drum beat to match the songs in the background is a really neat touch that I didn’t notice before. The iconic theme of Godzilla himself also greatly enhanced the film with how foreboding and fearsome he is as an unknown beast that towers over everyone, it all being practical gives it a sense of realism that CGI just can’t replicate.

Could’ve benefited from fleshing out our leads beyond Serizawa and better pacing but it stands out as one of the most iconic monster films for a reason and still holds up to this day.

Definitely one of the more mature-feeling Marvel films with how it delves into mental health and depression, I really liked its focus especially on Yelena and Bob. The Void as a whole was such an interesting concept that was amazing visually, that is to also say how well-filmed most of the scenes were with really solid practical effects.

I also really enjoyed the chemistry of the characters and how well they played off of one another. Honestly the only major problem is how much of the team there is to cover that inherently some are going to be left out (like when everyone just shows up out of nowhere during a certain scene), especially Bucky who does pretty much nothing of note and is probably only here because of popularity, which is unfortunate because there is a lot you could do with Bucky and mental health with The Void.

A bit overhyped but a really good time.

Despite his controversies, Johnathan Majors is really fantastic in this. An insanely emotional, raw and real performance where he transformed his entire body to truly be Killian Maddox.

Way more of a psychological thriller than anything else which surprised me (especially a Taxi Driver homage at that) and did a pretty well-done job at. You can feel deep sympathy for Killian with his social anxiety and mental illness yet it never glorifies his drive, showing how despite how well-intentioned a ion can be, an obsession for gratification that can destroy anyone

Just very well-done and I quite enjoyed it.

Some great performances from non-actors and jawdropping visuals at points but something is really weird across the whole film. The pacing is really slow, the scenes are intimate and real, a gentle score, and it’s even discussing real people and their way of life. Everything about it screams that’s it should be in the form of a documentary.

I am by no means a documentary guy but everything about this screams that’s what the medium this should’ve been in. All of the elements of making it a film script feels offputting, some of the ‘original’ characters being almost cartoonishly evil of like ‘yeah maybe you should like just retire and die then if you can’t get a job’.

Much like the previous two best picture winners I saw (Green Book and The King’s Speech) partly the problem is this was seen as THE best picture of its year when it just isn’t that impressive to me at least. I haven’t seen the rest of the nominees but I have seen far more praise for The Father, Minari and Promising Young Woman so maybe my opinion of this would’ve been higher if any of those won over it… but with that said I probably wouldn’t have seen this if it wasn’t a best picture winner so it’s a bit counterintuitive.

Definitely not a bad experience but it feels like it should’ve been in a completely different medium which harms the entire film as a whole.

Definitely THE shit scenes of all time I guess.

Yeah this was great. Only my second Kurosawa but I really enjoy his style already and see why he’s one of the greats, perfectly shot at almost every turn (especially with panning) with an amazing lead performance from Toshiro Mifune.

I love the contrast given with the husband’s reserved and defensive approach as opposed to the bandit’s crazy and wild style, eventually broken down and changed as we see the different perspectives given by their final duel.

Definitely an interesting one because while it ABSOLUTELY shouldn’t have beat out Inception, Toy Story 3 or The Social Network for Best Picture (probably Black Swan as well), it’s still a very well made character study of King George VI and his speech therapist including amazing performances from the leads, some great shots (even if there are plenty of… not great ones), and a tightly written script. The final speech at the end especially is excellent.

But that is to say that the rest of the film isn’t exactly that interesting or entertaining even, it’s a good analysis on the core relationship between the patient and his therapist but it leaves a lot to be desired from any other character. Guy Pearce and Helena Bonhan Carter really don’t get a lot to do and are kinda unmemorable parts of the story, if the individual dynamic between George and Lionel were enough to carry the film I would understand but it just wasn’t enough here and left me wanting a lot more.

It’s definitely an interesting dilemma with how great one single aspect of the movie is in kind of just an alright film outside of that.
Not absurd for Colin Furth to take Best Actor though, he killed it along with Geoffrey Rush. But I do wish it had way more to bring to the table so it could warrant its most infamous win.

Not a fan of that Hitler guy either I gotta say, wonder if that’ll be covered in The King’s Speech 2.

Beautiful visually but the lack of any real substance in the story kinda takes it down a lot, outside of the lead and his father’s dynamic I really don’t care about these characters and it’s VERY slow to get anywhere.

And yeah idk what was up with the PowerPoint presentation and weird Disney’s Dinosaurs segment in the beginning outside of ‘wow earth!’, takes me out of the movie a lot which sucks because I was getting more into it as it went on. “Hey, Jordan, let me give you some legal advice. Shut the fuck up!”
- Patrick Denham

Didn’t have a ton of expectations going into this but it really blew me away how fast the film felt despite its 3 hour runtime. Very well shot, pretty funny, great writing, peak ending and AMAZING acting from Leo, Margot and shockingly Jonah Hill.

Maybe some wonky editing decisions and A LOT of reliance on narration (which at times is a bit unnecessary) but I can really look past it, just a remarkable piece of film at its core. Showing how greed consumes absolutely and ambition can take control of anyone’s lives, in this case becoming a pathetic abusive little man. Which is a great angle to focus on, Jordan Belfort ruined so many people’s lives so while yes they show the ‘pros’ of being in such high-status, he is still portrayed as a very bad and immortal person, never glorifying his actions to the extent that he doesn’t face consequences.

This being so ridiculously different from the rest of Scorsese’s work also just gives it a lot of appeal, suuuper off the walls insane. Might have to let it simmer but it totally could be up there for one of my favorites of all time.

Oh but Cheating on Cristin Milioti AND Margot Robbie is insane, Jordan does NOT know ball.
