Unmistakably one of the wierder and more offbeat mainstream American movies of the year, the type of sequel that not only doubles down on the already loony "Autism is a superpower" concept of its predecessor, but takes it new heights. Watching these Japanese high fantasy animations from the 80's and 90's will always be delightful for the exact same reasons as their live-action American counterparts do from this same timeperiod: There is just a purity to their straightfowardness, the earnest, proud indulgence in the genre's most basic elements from dungeon crawling, brave swordsman, wizards, demons, zombies, a magical MacGuffin that can destroy the world, beautiful elf women, halflings, the list goes on. This is science-fiction at its best: Futuristic yet tangible, a mesmerizing, often psychedelic visual feast, a thought-provoking odyssey that examines the violent struggle/symbiosis between nature and man, going full body horror mode at times, lacks any simplistic messaging or screenwriter clichés and creates a detailed, intriguing world while implies a bigger universe that surrounds it. A universe where mankind feels like a dust particle, yet can make its individual impact on it. I really hope more and more people will discover this series, it really deserves it.
