We were honored to bring Dune back to the big screen last year, and potentially bringing more of David Lynch's incredible work to theatres in the future.

When examining the history of fashion in film, audiences tend to gravitate towards elaborate Victorian style outfits of period piece cinema or the immaculate dresses worn by Hollywood’s Golden Age. We overlook the complexity and difficulty of pulling off contemporary costume design, mainly due to our familiarity with the styles of the time. By undermining the significance of these outfits, we fail to see how they drive character development, and if done correctly become more timeless and culturally relevant than any fantasy couture.  

This attention to detail and dedication to contemporary costume design created one of the most fashionable films in history [1]; a movie that not only used fashion as the driving force for the plot but had us totally buggin’ for a wardrobe makeover. That film was Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995), and when Cher Horowitz and her Beverly Hills gang stepped onto the big screen strutting one of the outfits by Polish costume designer Mona May, the world was saved from the army of baggy clothes, backward caps, and flannels of the grunge era.  

Clueless kicked off a new wave of preppy minimalism: flaunting knee-high socks, plaid ensembles, and designer labels – becoming the blueprint for bold, playful, and totally fabulous fashion. With the 30th anniversary coming to theatres nationwide June 29 & 30, we scrolled through our computer closet app and picked out our six favorite fits that like still totally slay in our latest blog:

Ham, Ham, HAAAAAAM! For 40 years, Studio Ghibli has captivated the imaginations of viewers through immersive realism, offering compelling and effective stories that helped breathe life into animation. To quote Miyazaki:  

“Anime may depict fictional worlds, but I nonetheless believe that at its core it must have a certain realism. Even if the world depicted is a lie, the trick is to make it seem as real as possible. Stated another way, the animator must fabricate a lie that seems so real viewers will think the world depicted might possibly exist. [1]”   

This dedication to worldbuilding has not only created endearing characters and compelling plots, but decadent foods that look so tasty they make your mouth water. These steaming bowls of noodles, sizzling meats, and delectable desserts provide a sense of community for the inhabitants and reveal important details about their environment, helping place viewers into these fantastical worlds.

Clive Barker, David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Sam Raimi, and Wes Craven are some of the legendary directors that defined one of the greatest decades for horror in cinema. This was a time that saw the rise of low-budget films, advancements in special effects, and a counterculture movement that permeated into, not just Hollywood, but the zeitgeist of America.

As a director, few opportunities excite me more than capturing live performances and translating their magic to the cinema screen. Bringing Andrea Bocelli’s Concert in Tuscany to life through film, was an extraordinary experience. This project not only showcased the breathtaking beauty of Tuscany but also highlighted the incredible artistry of Bocelli, all while allowing us to capture it using techniques that led to an immersive viewing experience.

When we began planning the production of Andrea Bocelli’s concert, our primary vision was to create a cinematic experience that resonated with audiences, both in the theater and at home. Andrea is not just a vocalist; he embodies the essence of opera and crossover music, captivating audiences worldwide. Our goal was to encapsulate this essence while presenting the stunning landscapes of Tuscany as a backdrop. We wanted the evening to feel like a once in a moment celebration full of warmth and a sense of family. It was important to give a sense of context to these amazing moments whilst maintaining the live experience and to do so we created 5-6 vignettes; guests engaged in heartfelt conversations on themes close to Andrea’s heart— faith, family, and home. This gathering of cherished guests and friends took place around a warm, family-style lunch, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

Tuscany, with its rolling hills and historical architecture, is an iconic setting that enhances any performance. It was essential for us to integrate the beauty of the landscape into the narrative of the concert. Viewers understand the rules of the genre, often pointing out the fatal decisions characters make in the horror films they watch.
