Dreams don't have aspect ratios
wasn't that convinced at first, but the lush and surreal style really sets this one apart.
i love how simple it is, but how it totally works as a piece of cult media.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A boy from a rural area about to start middle school goes into the city for a new hairdo. Where this story takes place, there are rules governing middle school hairstyles, so he gets a stranger pretending to be his older brother to talk the salon into the fresh cut, perm, and dye job he wants. As he sits in front of the mirror checking out his new 'do, he imagines himself dancing—in a tuxedo, completely deadpan—in a cologne commercial dream sequence that goes on probably longer than is needed but offers such delightful levity in a short that a colleague calls award bait. I could see that point—it looks shot on film and in a square format, no less,…
Could be a bit sharper in its execution, especially as it ends with a bit of a whimper. But man what a dance scene in the middle!
As childhood fades into the distance, reality steps forward, transforming dreams into something far less ideal, but far more real.
Gorgeous film

not him ending up with the same haircut as lin gaoyuan, he was right to shave it all
This one I connected with a lot weirdly! It felt very nostalgic and reminded me a lot about childhood, despite not relating to anything directly necessary! Loved the main kids super deadpan acting, had several laughs throughout, and I just enjoyed this nice little mini adventure from a small town to the city and back. Looked fucking gorgeous too, and I was just fully immersed in this kids random adventure to get a haircut.
