astronomically misguided. a self described “purist” of Shakespeare who keeps in every line of Hamlet out of his devotion to the Bard’s craft, fundamentally misunderstands every single thematic idea or character nuance in favour of crafting the tale into his own fantasies of being the martyr. imagine being so obsessed with something that you clearly don’t understand the potential power of. and if Olivier can keep a Hamlet adaptation under 3 hours, then you can as well Branagh. takes 45 minutes for the narrative to start progressing and 2 entire hours to get to the performance of the play that establishes the momentum. we’ve evolved a lot in how to pace stories in hundreds of years, you’re not honouring the…

As probably everyone who has seen this movie knows, the scenes in the castle are the first thing that stands out. This film has some of the most stunning visuals ever captured on film. When you consider the superb staging, costumes, and overall production design, every scene that takes place in this location completely immerses you in the story.
The acting is excellent across the board; the actors successfully blend theatricality and realism in ways that make you feel like you could be in a Baz Luhrmann movie - especially the jester character, which was very jarring. And what was Kate doing with all that air banging?
All in all, even while the film's incredibly long running time is occasionally felt and Shakespeare's dialogue stands out more than in Henry V, it is still worth watching for its remarkable technical work.

this movie: *is the goofiest thing ive ever seen*
To watch Kenneth Branagh's grandiose cinematic adaption of Hamlet, or not to watch it! Tis not a question for true fans of one of William Shakespeare's most acclaimed tragedies.
"This above all - to thine own self be true."
I have always had a fascination with taking in the classics, so when it came to my 12th grade Honors Literature class studying Hamlet, I wanted to go all out. The first night after my class read through the play together, I went by Blockbuster and rented the Mel Gibson version which I thought was fine. Then I happened to find out there was a 4-hour version that featured the full text of the play, and I drove all around town…
If the Academy’s audacity extended to nominating his screenwriting for an adaptation which neither changed nor trimmed a single line of Shakespeare’s work, then perhaps we should concede Branagh’s Belfast may win Best Picture :(
