The cannibalistic exterior eating away at its melodramatic insides. A Sirk riff that goes beyond homage and into a dismantling and rebuilding structure of classic melodrama properties. This is a weepie where all the characters are in turmoil except the viewer, who is most likely in hysterics. I know I was. Sublime.

This film marks a huge turning point for John Waters & the Dreamlanders. Years of pushing boundaries with the filth of their previous films finally paid off, earning them a rather respectable budget & a chance at mainstream notoriety. Waters aimed to "infect a larger audience" with his first R-rated film, & he did just that.

Polyester is a hilarious farce from start to finish. It's a Sirk-satire that takes the piss out of every trope in a melodrama with one ridiculous situation after another. Alcoholism, infidelity, religious zealots, teen pregnancy, a foot stomper(?)—this one has it all. Divine finally gets to live out his dream of being Elizabeth Taylor in the role of Francine Fishpaw. Edith Massey is as charming as ever.…

I am kinda glad I didn't have the odorama card. I wouldn't've been able to resist scratching and sniffing it, and I know I would have regretted it. John Waters nails the satire of suburban life, taking his ramped up, twisted, campy look at it and turning it into a weirdly scathing homage.
