Basically if Rosemary's Baby and They Live put on their swimsuit and went to the beach. Terrifying in plain sight, and rooted in sun-baked pain and carnality. One of the most shocking conclusions I can think of, even though it can be seen from miles away.
More people should offer to pee in your tea for you. Hospitality is dead.
Stuart Gordon's Eyes Wide Shut. A wonderfully bizarre, unnatural parody of cutthroat social-climbing Beverly Hills, 90210-esque rich yuppie teenagers coming of age (starring Baywatch actor Billy Warlock as B-movie Marty McFly) that in its final reel morphs into a disgustingly tangible, conspiratorial body horror film where wealth serves as both a superficial cover and conduit for all the psychosexual, Lovecraftian perversities you're told are definitely not happening beneath the surface of power. The utterly repulsive, phantasmagoric goop-incest-orgy finale of this is as surreal and visceral a depiction of class violence and sexual depravity as there's perhaps ever been (shoutout to gore make-up FX legend Screaming Mad George), and feels particularly apt in the midst of the Jeffrey Epstein news. Time to pee in the tea and get shunting. "I'm not paranoid, all my fears are real."

Upper class deplorables are feeding (literally) on everyone else in this sadistically psychosexual goo fest which involves a Beverly Hills teen discovering his parents are part of a gruesome orgy cult for the social elite. Works very well at displaying the golden age of grotesque (the 80’s) and Shunting has never been as glamorous as its depicted here.
Society is a pretty good 80’s teen sex romp/mystery film for 2/3rds of its runtime until it goes all the way in its spectacular final act, ing into the threshold of greatness as surrealistic gore wizard Screaming Mad George dazzles us with orgasmic depictions of pinkly lit depravity.
A must watch, and possibly Yuzna’s finest hour as a director.
First 75 minutes: fun “80s high schooler dodging a town-wide conspiracy” kind of movie where Billy Warlock does a Marty McFly impression and rocks a rad mullet
Last 20 minutes: Screaming Mad George concocting one of the greatest symphonies of gooey practical effects and unimaginable body horror the world has ever seen
If the title wasn’t obvious enough, there’s a campy little commentary in here on old money classism and the carefree indulges of the rich, which is nice and all, but let’s be honest—you came here for the Shunting.
