Come and See

1985

★★★★★ Watched

If you've seen Apocalypse Now you know how you can be at a complete loss for words after a viewing.
A full day later, I've finally found some sentences to describe this masterpiece with, although they won't do it any justice at all.

You're not going to have a joyous watch. This movie is anything but entertaining.
Its message is to tell you how war is pointless hell, a message it conveys relentlessly.

It's grim, or better yet, extremely depressing,…

Anthropocene: The Human Epoch

2018

★★★★½ Watched

Gut-wrenching from the first scene and heartbreaking after only 40 minutes. I felt devastated, and that is the exact message that must be delivered.

Luckily, the Gotthard tunnel scene was fucking amazing with the great sound editing and insane camera angling they pulled off. Now that's film. My compliments. I would rewatch it just for that.
I must add that I may have smoked a little something during my watch, which might have helped (it did, tremendously).

This was painful…

Old Henry

2021

★★★★ Watched

A father trying to leave his past behind by tending to his desolate farm, is forced to pick up his guns once more, when a man found left for dead brings trouble to his porch. As events unravel, his son wonders who his seemingly moralistic dad really is.

Old Henry nails the feeling of desolation through its dialogue and use of locations. Throughout the film, the focus is kept on the farm with very few other locations used, while the…

Revenge

2017

★★★½ Watched

Three business associates on a hunting getaway in the desert are in for a bloody trip, when the woman they saw as pleasure turns the tables and hunts them down.

The storyline is quite thin, the characters aren’t complex, the film sometimes feels slow, but it overall doesn’t shy away from gore with plenty of bloodshed, and I believe that’s what we’re here for. It is quite cathartic seeing predators become prey.

Blonde

2022

★★★★ Watched

Based on the fictional novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde depicts Marilyn Monroe as she gets consumed by the heavily sexist male dominated world of Hollywood.

Traversing this overly dramatized nightmare, Marilyn falls victim to the many men out there to take advantage of her; men who only see her as a sex object for their use, blind to her unique personality and elaborate sense of intellectualism hidden underneath the persona.
Dominik exaggerates this with a very unsettling use of…

Shutter Island

2010

★★★★½ Watched

Shutter Island's sinister atmosphere and plot left me feeling miserable.
And that is great in case of a psychological thriller.

Throughout the whole movie you sense an unsettling vibe filled with paranoia. Who can be trusted? Who can't be trusted? Can anyone even be trusted?
Combined with a sinister island in the middle of a rough dark sea, you have a recipe for something very special.

Shutter Island is the jaw clenching, nail-bite-provoking movie that you must watch if you…
