I hate one sided documentaries. If your case is strong, present both sides of the argument and let it speak for itself. While this documentary does a great job at presenting the facts that they want to show, it also ignores many others.

The fact that the director said during the Q+A that they didn’t want to talk to anyone for the film who presented a point that they (as in crew involved with the film) disagreed with should cause alarm. You cannot talk about silencing others who you are also silencing people.

3. I absolutely love going to see movies in theaters! However, I am not always the best about actually seeing my anticipated releases when they are in theaters. Watch a movie you meant to see in theaters, but didn’t get around to it.

Mia Goth proved that she could command the screen back with A Cure for Wellness and she continues to prove it with every film she is in. She clearly is a star, even if some of the films she is in doesn't deserve the performance that she gives. Just watch her performance during the end credits scene. Truly haunting stuff.

While this film is a love letter to early technicolor films, mainly The Wizard of Oz, it doesn't do enough during the film itself to deserve this film style. Visually, I love it but when I find myself asking why these choices are being made, it pulls me out and makes me realize that I'm watching a movie.

The premise of the film had me greatly intrigued. I walked in expecting a modern day Before Sunset type of film. What I ended up getting was a rambling of these culture war topics that are destroying our society. Sure, the conversations need to be had but the end of the film undercuts any of the choices or discussions had by one of the characters. The two actors were charming and personable during the Q+A after the film but I didn't feel that spark while watching the film. I found them to both be rather cardboard cutouts of characters instead of fully fleshed out people.

Every single day it feels like hope is being taken away and being replaced by repression and fear. While I do like some of the reporting that comes from The New York Times, this film does highlight some of the huge problematic issues occurring at the publisher. The damage has been done and it cannot be reversed. Do I completely devalue all of the other work the publisher has done because of the transphobic views they have? I'm still struggling with this. Those who are uninformed and doing this "for the children" are winning the culture wars that they are making. Hope seems to be in small supply.

While I found this film moving and the work that Chase is doing to be inspiring and challenging, how does this film reach the people who need to see it? Most of that cult are currently review bombing Snow White. Clearly that is the bigger issue. I found myself in tears at the end because the work that this community is doing, all of this hard and hopeful work is being killed before it has time to grow.

Trans rights are human rights.

5. I grew up near Dayton, Ohio, aka the birthplace of aviation! In honor of my hometown, watch a movie that heavily features aviation.

I had to change my mindset while watching this film. I normally expect a higher level of story when it comes to a Miyazaki film but the moment I told myself this has the bones of a Saturday morning cartoon, I found myself enjoying it a lot more. That isn't to say that the film isn't better than most animated films released in the early 1990s, because it is. It's just that expectation game got in the way and this film doesn't deliver on those classic moments and characters that we have grown to love from Studio Ghibli.

26. Today marks the most important holiday of the month: the anniversary of the release of Charli XCX's 2016 Vroom Vroom EP (prod. Sophie). Watch a movie Charli XCX has marked watched on Letterboxd, or watch any movie with a hyperpop aesthetic (e.g. The Substance, I Saw the TV Glow, Spring Breakers, Climax, etc.).

While I personally rather see Taron Egerton in more interesting projects, he was perfectly adequate in this mindless turn your brain off action flick. Nothing wrong with that especially with how stressful like can be right now. Might add this into my Christmas movie rotation...

As someone who finds theology and dogmatic behavior to be fascinating, I have always been enamored with Se7en. Obviously John Doe goes way too far with his ideology but you have to ire the dedication and when he explains the reasoning behind it, I couldn’t help but sit back in my seat and think he might be right. This isn’t Brad Pitt’s finest hour as an actor but he was believable enough. Great thriller, even after watching it years ago I’m still captivating by everything on display.

I've got no problem saying that this is a fun and entertaining movie. Does it bring anything else to the table? No. But let us all be honest, this is a hulk movie! Especially after the previous adaptation which took everything too seriously and made the story way too dark for general audiences, the film feels like a fun video game movie brought to life. It's not trying to be anything else.

Fun set pieces, overall good acting. Wish we could have seen a true sequel to this film.

Thank you to samuel_shovel for hosting!

Top 5:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prompt 1:

601 Area Code - Central & Southern Mississippi

Delta blues music has been on my mind a lot with the release of "Sinners" recently. One of my favorite delta blues musicians is Mississippi John Hurt (not to be confused with English actor Sir John Hurt).

Watch a film featuring the same named English actor John Hurt.

Prompt 2:

602 Area Code - Phoenix, Arizona

The phoenix is a mythical bird that has the ability to be born out of its own ashes after burning, symbolizing renewal and rebirth.

Watch a remake or reboot of a movie or franchise.

Prompt 3:

603 Area Code - The entire state of New Hampshire

New Hampshire's state motto is "Live Free or Die".

Watch a movie that deals with death or mortality as a central theme.

Prompt 4:

604 Area Code - Southwest British Columbia (Vancouver area)

Over the years, Vancouver has been a hotspot for filming movies & TV due to generous tax breaks. Often times, the movie isn't even set in Vancouver, as it's made to represent another location.

Watch a movie filmed in Vancouver.

Prompt 5:

Area Code 605 - The entire state of South Dakota

South Dakota is probably most famous for the Mt. Rushmore monument of 4 former U.S. presidents sculpted into a mountain. Kind of a bummer in my opinion, but anyways...

Watch a film with a president (real or fictional) or head of state character (doesn't have to be the U.S.). Ruling royalty is okay too!

Prompt 6:

Area Code 606 - Eastern Kentucky

The Kentucky Derby was a few weeks ago. Both men and women love to wear some sort of overly complicated hat as a fashion statement when attending the event.

Watch a film where the characters are wearing hats on the poster.

Prompt 7:

Area Code 607 - Southern Tier region of New York (Ithaca)

The town of Ithaca, New York was named after the Greek Island, a location mentioned in the Odyssey.

Watch a film either directly or indirectly based off of a Greek myth or figure.

Prompt 8:

Area Code 608 - Southwestern, Wisconsin (Madison)

Madison, WI is the hometown of the departed Chris Farley, an SNL cast member from 1990-1995.

Watch a movie based off an SNL skit. See the full list here. I know there aren't a ton of options so, if none of those tickle your fancy or are unavailable to you, watch a film with multiple SNL alums in the cast.

Prompt 9:

609 Area Code - Central & Southeastern New Jersey (Atlantic City)

Atlantic City is a town famous for it's casinos and beaches. It's kind of considered a little rundown from it's heyday during Prohibition when it was basically what Las Vegas is now (see Boardwalk Empire). Normally, I would do a casino prompt here but I feel like we've had some of those recently so I'm going to focus on the beach aspect.

Watch a film that takes place primarily at the beach or a beachside town.

Prompt 10:

610 Area Code - Southeastern Pennsylvania (Allentown)

I've never been to this part of Pennsylvania. The main thing I really know about it is the old steel mills and the Billy Joel song "Allentown".

Watch a film with a Billy Joel song on the soundtrack.

Prompt 11:

611 Area Code - Special service code used for general customer service related to telecommunications

Watch a film where the protagonist works in some sort of customer-facing service role. This could be a waiter, cashier, a salesperson (my movie is a cleaning person). This prompt's pretty wide open for creativity so do with it what you wish.

Prompt 12:

612 Area Code - Minneapolis, Minnesota

As I write this, we're in the middle of the NBA playoffs. One of the final 4 teams competing will be the Minnesota Timberwolves. Let's take a look at some timber.

Watch a film that takes primarily in the woods or jungle.

Prompt 13:

613 Area Code - Eastern Ontario, Canada (Ottawa)

I know Montreal is the Canadian city known for primarily speaking French. However, I've heard Ottawa has it's fair share of Francophones as well.

Watch a French New Wave film.

Prompt 14:

614 Area Code - Central Ohio (Columbus)

"In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue" is a poem every American kid learns in elementary school. What they don't tell you about, at least when I was in school, is the awful truth about colonization.

Watch a film about an invasion of some kind. It could be colonization, it could be an alien invasion, a home invasion; this is completely up to personal interpretation.

Prompt 15:

615 Area Code - Central Tennessee (Nashville)

Nashville is the home of country music here in the U.S. Giddy up, cowboy.

Watch a western film.

Prompt 16:

616 Area Code - Southwestern Michigan (Grand Rapids)

Grand Rapids, MI is famous for being the childhood home of Gerald Ford, 38th president of the United States who took over the role after Richard Nixon resigned due to the Watergate scandal. Ford was a one-term president (or partial term, I guess) and lost re-election to Jimmy Carter (RIP).

Watch a film released during the Ford istration (August 9th, 1974 to January 20th, 1977).

Prompt 17:

617 Area Code - Boston, Massachusetts

Using some more elementary school history lessons here, one famous event of colonial times is the Boston Tea Party of 1773 in which protesters dumped tea into the harbor. Spilling tea has a different connotation in modern times, meaning to gossip or reveal a secret.

Watch a film that revolves around some sort of secret! It can be as a widespread as a full blown conspiracy or as personal as an affair. This is another one open to interpretation. (My pick just happens to star Boston's own Matt Damon!)

Prompt 18:

618 Area Code - Southern Illinois

Apparently, southern Illinois has long held the nickname "Little Egypt". There's no definitive proof of the origin but the consensus is that the name stems from a period in the 1830's when central & northern Illinois had poor harvests and were forced to travel south and buy grain from a more bountiful southern Illinois crop. A similar situation is written in the Bible where ancient people had to travel to Egypt to buy grain, hence the name.

This prompt is a bit of a stretch: watch a film that performed well in the overseas box office that did poorly in the U.S. (or vice versa).

Prompt 19:

619 Area Code - San Diego

San Diego is the home of everyone's favorite fictional news anchor, Ron Burgundy.

Watch a film about the news media. It can be about print journalism, TV journalism, documentary directors, whatever.

Prompt 20:

620 Area Code - Southern Kansas (Holcomb)

Holcomb, KS is famous for the events that take place in "In Cold Blood", the non-fiction true crime novel written by Truman Capote that is a bit of a progenitor for that subgenre. This book was later turned into a movie and this period of Capote's life is the basis for the "Capote" biopic.

Watch a movie involving Truman Capote (he wrote a few screenplays as well) or watch a film starring one of the actors from the "Capote" biopic.

Prompt 21:

621 Area Code - Houston, Texas

Houston, TX is the headquarters of NASA.

Watch a film that features some kind of space ship. This can be a sci-fi movie or a film about astronauts (or whatever else you can creatively come up with).

Prompt 22:

622 Area Code - Northern Mississippi (Tupelo)

Tupelo, MS is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Besides being a musician, Elvis starred in 31 films over his lifetime.

Watch a movie starring Elvis or a biopic about him (we got two in the last few years). "Bubba Ho-tep" also totally counts.

Prompt 23:

623 Area Code - Phoenix, AZ

Just like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a second Phoenix, AZ area code has risen on this list.

Watch a film starring one of the Phoenix siblings. While Joaquin and the departed River Phoenix are the most famous, they have 3 actress sisters as well: Rain, Liberty, & Summer Phoenix.

Prompt 24:

624 Area Code - Western New York (Niagara Falls)

Niagara Falls was once nicknamed the "Honeymoon Capital of the World". If you watch older movies, you'll see characters talking about going there for their honeymoon all the time.

Watch a movie about a wedding or honeymoon. Bonus points if you can find a movie that goes to or talks about going to Niagara Falls for the honeymoon.

Prompt 25:

625 Area Code - Marshall Islands

This area code's not technically in use but is assigned to the Marshall Islands if it's ever needed.

Watch a film directed by, written by, and/or starring Penny Marshall or her brother Garry Marshall.

Prompt 26:

626 Area Code - San Gabriel Valley, California

The San Gabriel Valley is named after the archangel Gabriel. Apparently, he's the patron saint of postal workers, telecommunication employees, and pretty much anything to do with sending messages.

Watch a film about mail!

Prompt 27:

627 Area Code - Napa & Sonoma, California

So this area code was setup for Napa and Sonoma but never ended up coming to fruition due to successful number pooling (I don't know what this means). Napa & Sonoma are famous areas for winemaking.

Watch a film about alcohol or drinking culture.

Prompt 28:

628 Area Code - San Francisco, CA

I used to live in SF and it's a city still near and dear to my heart. I hosted a scavenger hunt years ago and did an SF prompt. I wasn't planning on repeating it but the area codes had other plans. SF has such a rich history of movies that I don't feel too bad repeating.

Watch a film that takes place in San Francisco.

Prompt 29:

629 Area Code - Nashville, TN

Another repeat! Besides country music, Nashville is probably most famous for hot chicken.

Watch a film that has a chicken in it! This list has a pretty extensive list of movies featuring chickens (and other fowl) but feel free to find your movie elsewhere too.

Prompt 30:

630 - Western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois

How fitting that we started this list with Mississippi and are ending it with Chicago as they are home to the two biggest blues music subgenres: delta blues and Chicago blues. The "father" of Chicago blues is Muddy Waters.

Watch a film with water on the poster (or in the name). The muddier the better.

Every Film Seen in the Theatre 2c72r https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/geekwatch/list/every-film-seen-in-the-theatre/ letterboxd-list-1349871 Mon, 9 Jan 2017 04:20:18 +1300 <![CDATA[

I just thought I would try to do a little experiment to see if I can put a point as to what has helped create my love for film and what has made me into the person I am today. Perhaps the Star Wars Special Edition was not the first film that I saw at the theatre but it was the first one that I going to and having an impact at the age of 5. I probably went to other Disney films before hand like Pocahontas or any of the other rereleases that the company use to do. I cannot find any conformation of this but it would be an easy assumption to make.

Star Wars changed my life, as it did for many people. I have always credited seeing that film in 1997 gave me the grand love for film and was one of the reasons why I went to film school. I, like every other film student, had dreams of creating a world that would impact the world and leave a legacy that would last for decades. That dream for me started to fade away after three years of school and countless days of not getting sleep because I would be working on film shoots, going to classes, and trying to have an actual job making money. But that is a story for another day.

Another film that stands out clearly in mind is Pokémon: The First Movie. I seeing it at the North Shore theatre in Mequon, Wisconsin and leaving the theatre in tears because the film caught fire and burned before it ended. I never knew how the film ended for what felt like years but was probably only a few months when the film hit VHS. I miss the sound of the projector now, the grain on the screen, the softness that you would always get from film. Perhaps it's misplaced nostalgia but I still love seeing a film shown on actual film and I still drive many hours to see some of my favorites projected on film even if the film has a slight chance to burn.

I've seen countless movies with friends and family and most of them have stories that come with them. Some of them might seem silly to most but are incredibly personal to me. Sometimes the story that goes with the movie is better than the movie I saw itself, like the way that I almost ended up in the hospital just before leaving for my showing of Iron Man 2. The stupid things a teenage guy will do to impress a girl. Now I still have love for watching movies at home with friends and family, I love the intimacy of the theatre more. Hundreds of people gathered in a dark room to share an experience that you cannot repeat at home. You have countless distractions and most of them are taken away at the theatre or at least should be.

I would like to apologize to my girlfriend for many reasons. First, I don't mean to make your heart go berserk everytime I confront someone for talking at full volume at a movie or for having a phone out during the climax or even for smoking an e-cigarettes. You tell me everytime that one of these times I'm going to get flat out punched but I cannot stand the rudeness of people, they feel entitiled because they paid $10 to see a movie. Guess what I paid the same thing you did, I showed up early to pick out the seat I wanted and just because you show up late and you need to Snapchat every moment of your life doesn't mean you have a life more meaningful than mine. Secondly, I'm sorry for taking you to some terrible films: Annie, The Lazarus Effect, Shut In, Jem and the Holograms and countless other films. You went with me so I wouldn't have to be alone and I thank you for it. Four years together has given us many great film memories together and some bad ones too.

July 20, 2012. That is a date that still haunts me every moment I look at a movie theatre. That is the day that a man attacked my home, the place I go to for escapism and to try and forget about the world for a few hours a day. I will never forgive that man nor this country for letting such an act happen. The act keeps happening at schools, churches, clubs, and now even airports. We have no safety left in this world. I do not live in fear of this, I just walk around everyday with the names of the victims in my head: Jonathan Blunk, Alexander Boik, Jesse Childress, Gordon Cowden, Jessica Ghawl, John Larimer, Matt McQuinn, Micayla Medek, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, Alex Sullivan, Alexander Teves, and Rebecca Wingo. Those people are not memorialized in anyway, they are asked to be faint memories to us yet they gave up their lives doing something that most of us do everyday. You shouldn't have to expect things like this to happen but now you clearly do. You must always expect the unexpected in our world. I try to ask most of friends and family to think about those victims on July 20 every year and just try to imagine someone attacking you at the place where you go to leave the world only to have it turn into your worst nightmare.

I spend a lot of my time thinking about how grateful I am lately. I have found myself working as a film reviewer for two schools I have attended which let me see many films I never cared to see. I have found myself struggling to write about films at times after being confronted about how I have no right telling people not to see a film that countless people put effort into and once again I tell you that you are correct. I have no right to do so, I have no degree that tells me that I can tell people to stay away from art that I find distasteful, I know how it works as well with people telling others to stay away from my work because it seems juvenile and lacks craft. I agree, we all have our opinions and I never want to crush anyones, I just want to be a person who gets the ball rolling and gets conversation flowing.

Perhaps none of my rambling makes any sense, it normally doesn't unless I have an editor look at it and tell me all the ways I need to focus more but I wanted to get something raw out into the world. Something that might not make sense but still can mean something.

Scavenger Hunt 119 54242x https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/geekwatch/list/scavenger-hunt-119/ letterboxd-list-57891618 Mon, 27 Jan 2025 02:32:09 +1300 <![CDATA[

Thanks to Colin for hosting this month's hunt.

Top 5:

Prompts:
1. If Scavenger Hunts were movies, the first prompt would be the poster. Watch a film with a painted poster.

2. Now put an arthouse flair on it. Watch a movie with an entirely black-and-white poster.

3. If we start low, we can only go up from there. (That's just physics.) Watch any director's least popular or lowest rated film on Letterboxd.

4. Letterboxd can feel a little American-centric sometimes, so let's get an outsider's perspective. Watch a movie about/set in the United States directed by a non-American (e.g. Once Upon a Time In America, Widows, News from Home, The Ice Storm, The Power of the Dog, etc.).

5. Okay, technically that was still Americentric. To make up for it: Watch a movie known exclusively by a non-English title. Less Parasite, Breathless, or Pan's Labyrinth, more Y Tu Mamá También, Ikiru, and La Haine.

6. Many actors get their start in non-English language movies but eventually move to English language roles (Salma Hayek, Jackie Chan, Marlene Dietrich, etc.). Far fewer English-speaking Hollywood stars eventually move to working with global auteurs and speaking different languages for their roles. For this prompt, you can seek out anyone willing to get out of their comfort zone. Watch a movie starring someone acting in a non-native language.

7. Last year was a big year for multilingual films, with many global awards frontrunners—including Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez—prominently featuring multiple spoken languages. Watch a movie with at least three spoken languages. You can check this on Letterboxd under any movie's "Details." (I promise this is the last language-based prompt.)

8. We all have watchlists. Some are just more unnecessarily difficult to maintain than others. Watch a film on my Ten-per-year, hundred+ year watchlist.

9. Today is the Super Bowl, and the Lions had their best season record of all time this year. Additionally, over the last few days, Tottenham have played Liverpool in the 2nd leg of the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, Aston Villa in the 4th round of the FA Cup, and two Europa League games; hopefully they've made it through at least one of these competitions. Celebrate my American and European football teams and Watch a movie about an unlikely hero or an underdog.

10. Secede from our modern techno-oligarchy. Watch a film made before the first commercially successful personal computers were released in 1977.

11. We can do good things on computers, too. Like Letterboxd. Or, most importantly, play Resident Evil. Watch a movie set in any classic Resident Evil location: a creepy mansion, a police station, an orphanage, a sewer, a science lab, an island, or a small European village.

12. With horror on the brain, one of my favorite niche micro-genres is horror films directed by filmmakers who aren't known for working in the genre. Watch a film from my list Experiments In Terror: Horror Films by Non-Horror Directors or any other movie you feel fits that category.

13. Watch a movie about a nun, a ballet dancer, or a sex worker. That's it, that's the prompt.

14. Obligatory Valentine's Day prompt, but weird, in honor of some of my favorite romance movies like Blue Velvet, The Young Girls of Rochefort, and Chungking Express: Watch either an erotic thriller, a non-English movie musical, or a movie that could be considered an unconventional rom-com.

15. I love nothing more than a hyper-specific title. Watch a movie with a title that's five words or longer. The more it looks like a complete sentence, the better.

16. There should always be an element of discovery to a Scavenger Hunt. Watch a film you hadn't heard of before today.

17. I didn't really get into movies until late into my teen years. In honor of my somewhat stunted cinephilic development, Watch a movie on BFI's List of the 50 Films You Should See By the Age of 14. If you've seen them all, watch a children's/family movie made before 1980.

18. We often think of certain genres as locked in their place in time. Let's unlock them. Watch a western or noir film made after 1956 (the year The Searchers came out), or Watch a science-fiction or action film made before 1968 (the year 2001: A Space Odyssey came out).

19. Embrace minimalism. Watch a film with ten or fewer people listed in the cast on Letterboxd. Try Letterboxd's chamber-piece showdown for inspiration.

20. One of my favorite filmmakers, Mike Leigh, released Hard Truths this year at the age of 81; today he turns 82. Watch a movie made by a director who was at least 65 years old when the film was released.

21. You know who else is rad? Icelandic icon Björk Guðmundsdóttir. Björk released solo studio albums in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2022. Watch a film from one of those years, or watch The Juniper Tree, Dancer In the Dark, or The Northman.

22. Celebrate Black History Month and Watch a film from NPR & Slate's The New Black Film Canon, S. Torriano Berry & Venise T. Berry's The 50 Most Influential Black Films, or any film made by a Black director on either list.

23. The Oscars are scheduled to air a week from today. Watch a movie on the list of lowest rated Best Picture nominees or on the list of least popular Best Picture nominees.

24. I come from a family of non-film lovers, so instead of paying tribute to my grass-touching kin, let's honor the neverending succession of filmmaking dynasties from Hollywood and beyond. Watch a film starring a nepo baby.

25. Watch a pre-Code Hollywood film or a movie once rated X or NC-17 by the MPAA.

27. I've done hyperpop so now—logically—I must do shoegaze. Watch a movie that you think epitomizes any of the qualities of shoegaze—dreamy, hypnagogic, slow, etc.—or watch either version of My Bloody Valentine.

28. If Scavenger Hunts were movies, the last prompt would be the credits. Watch a movie by one of my favorite directors: Yasujirō Ozu, Mike Leigh, Abbas Kiarostami, Chantal Akerman, Robert Altman, Wong Kar-Wai, Éric Rohmer, Tsai Ming-Liang, Ingmar Bergman, or David Lynch (R.I.P.).

 1. I Saw the Devil

Thanks to Hannah for hosting this challenge.

Top 5:
1. City Lights
2. All About Eve
3. Wicked
4. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
5. Gone with the Wind

The Prompts

1. In the spirit of January and the start of a new year, let’s work on some resolutions. How about we start by watching a movie you actually just really want to watch to get you going and start your stats off on the right track with a fun "first watch".

2. I know it’s January, but sometimes there just isn’t enough time to get in all of the holiday films you love. Go ahead and watch a holiday film you didn’t get a chance to see. (Could be any holiday, go wild, who am I to judge?)

3. I always say I’m going to finish my lists and only do it like 10% of the time. Watch a movie from your scavenger hunt graveyard, or if this is your first, check out the master list and pick a prompt.

4. Letteboxd is one of my favorite sites, and I am addicted to closing my rings. Watch a film from one of the rings you haven’t completed yet or use this as a spot to watch a movie from another challenge you might be doing this year. [check out your "stats" page].

5. I’m a kind of voracious reader. I always want to read more, so it's always my resolution to read an unattainable amount of books. Go ahead and watch a literary adaptation. (Here's a list to get you started, or this one.)

6. I struggle between wanting to always watch new movies and missing some of my favorites. Go ahead and watch a comfort movie, or one you think might become a comfort movie.

7. In the new year, I think it’s important we all work on educating ourselves. Go ahead and find a documentary that speaks to you. (You can start here if you can't think of one).

8. Who doesn’t have a resolution about their job? I work for a Tribe, and so I spend a lot of time catching up learning about Indigenous content. Watch a movie by a filmmaker from a marginalized community or starring a predominantly POC cast.

9. Forget work. Let’s talk about the fun stuff we’re looking forward to this year. Watch a film from a country you want to visit (or visit again if you already have).

10. Sometimes, I put off movies because they seem hard, or they’re long, or I just don’t feel like thinking. Watch a movie you’ve honestly been putting off for whatever reason.

11. I’m a big fan of going to the movies. Go see a movie in theaters, or stream a release from 2025 (or the end of 2024).

12. I like working through filmographies of actors and directors, but sometimes I struggle to complete them. Watch a movie from your favorite director or actor that you haven’t seen yet. If you’ve seen all of them, pick your second favorite, you mad lil lad.

13. It’s 2025, we don’t have time anymore. And frankly, I am a huge proponent of a tight 90. Watch a film under 100 minutes. (This might me by favorite list on this app tbh).

14. Let’s get to know each other, make some friends, find some common ground. Click around, find someone you either already follow or a review from a recent movie you watched that you found funny or insightful, and watch one of their four favorites.

15. We’re all trying to learn every film ever made and keep up on all the new ones, right? Go ahead and watch an old movie. I’ll let you define what old is to you, but it has to be before you were born at least.

16. Letterboxd is a very fun place to make very fun lists. I’ve found a ton that I love to revisit for these hunts. Go find a fun list and watch a movie you haven’t seen yet from it (maybe leave a comment and thank them for their dope list). Some of my faves include: 🌈Pride: A Chronological History of Queer Interest & LGBTQ+ Cinema, The Oxford History of World Cinema, Women Directors: The Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films, Befriending the lyrical loneliness…, Where to Begin: Great Directors)

17. January is a fun month. We got a lot of sports popping off– NFL, WNBA, NBA, NHL, and CFB to name a few American classics. Watch a sports movie.

18. Last time I hosted, I made you watch a film from my favorite city and hometown, Pittsburgh. I also made you watch one from where I currently live, Miami. I’ve also lived in New York, Toronto, Brazil, California, and Virginia. Watch a movie set in any of those places.

19. A major resolution I have had for the past few years is to learn Spanish. Watch a movie in a language different from your own.

20. It’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the US today. In the spirit of his work, watch a movie about the Civil Rights Movement, protesting, or civil disobedience.

21. Yesterday was also Inauguration Day, meaning the US has a new president and we all have feelings about it I’m sure. Go ahead and watch a movie with a president in it could be a biopic or just a fictional president.

22. My girlfriend started using Letterboxd when we started dating. She’s the true cinephile in our relationship. She definitely didn’t tell me to write this. Go ahead and watch a movie from her all time faves or from movies we’ve watched together

23. Enough about my super amazing wonderful partner. Ask your partner or best friend or sibling or whoever means a lot to you what movie you should watch for this prompt.

24. A good resolution I’ve tried to stick to is eating out less and cooking more. I love cooking, so it all works out. Watch a film about cooking, food, or restaurants.

25. New year means decluttering. Go ahead and clean out some of your watchlist by watching one here.

26. Oscar nominees are going to be announced this month. Watch a movie you think will be nominated in any category (or if you want to wait and watch one after the announcement, do that).

27. Speaking of Oscar nominations, go ahead and watch a movie or performance you think got snubbed, historically.

28. Maybe in the new year, you’ll want to spend more time with family. Watch a movie about family. Or, frankly, if you’re like me and don’t like your family, watch a movie about getting away from your family.

29. We all have gaps in our viewing, and that’s why we do these hunts. Watch a film from a genre that isn’t one of your favorites.

30. Every year, Steven Soderberg published his list of content he consumed. It usually publishes the first week of January, but if you don’t want to wait for the 2024 list, watch a movie from his 2023/4 list.

31. It’s the end of the month– you did it! We’re 8% done with 2025. Enjoy a free spot to get a jump on February.

 1. Out of Sight
 2. Santa Claus: The Movie
 3. 24×36
 4. Harakiri
 5. Breakfast at Tiffany's
 6. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

While I've been sadly sporadic with my participation with these scavenger hunts. I'm still always excited to make the list and watch a couple new films. Most of these films have appeared on other lists I have made so eventually the pressure will get to me and I'll finally watch them.

Original List: boxd.it/hpuzY

Top 5:
1. The Jungle Book
2. If Beale Street Could Talk
3. Winter's Bone
4. Amanda Knox
5 Timecop

1. Let's do introductions! My name is Amanda, watch a movie with a character named Amanda!

2. Nothing beats the love of my life, New York! Watch a movie filmed there!

3. I'm an education major. Watch a movie with a great teacher!

4. I love Dark Horse comics, but the Marvel/DC fanwars are funny. Out of spite, watch a comic book movie that's not Marvel or DC!

5. Fifth grade kickstarted my lifelong Jim Carrey obsession. Watch a movie with one of your fictional/real-life crushes! Bonus points if they're your first, and tell me who they are in the notes!

6. I'm a theatre kid dropout. Watch a musical (pro-shots count)!

7. In honor of my friend, Melvin, watch any hand-drawn Disney movie!

8. Stop-motion is my favorite medium, hands down! Watch a stop-motion movie! (bonus points for rankin/bass).

9. As a cringy goth teenager, I'm contractually obligated to include this prompt: Watch a Tim Burton movie!

10. I see you shiver with antici....pation for this next prompt! Rocky Horror is my favorite movie of all time, so watch a cult movie!

11. I started getting seriously into film in junior year, and I personally thank my film teacher, Mrs. Pendley, for that. Pick a movie from her recommendation list!

12. Beware of falling chandeliers! I'm currently reading Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, watch any adaptations of/films inspired by Phantom of the Opera! There's surprisingly more of these than I thought.

13. Often, I watch movies that I know I would've gone crazy over if I saw them as a little kid. Watch a movie that you think your younger self would've loved!

14. My dear letterboxd , you're not immune to my emotional late 2000's childhood entertainment. Case in point, pick your poison because you're watching either a Barbie, Bratz, or Monster High movie.

15. I watched my first horror movie at 15, the 1974 Dracula with Jack Palance! Watch a vampire movie!

16. I'm a sucker for John Hughes. Watch a movie starring any of The Brat Pack!

17. My friends like to bully me for not seeing their childhood classics. Watch a movie from this list of flicks that I apparently missed out on (and tell me if they're good).
