I had accidentally bumped into this film many years ago now and always wondered what it would feel like to experience it in the cinema, and now I can finally say that I have felt that indescribable feeling of being taken away into the lives of wonderfully written and played characters; my first Wim Wenders film that perhaps helped me to understand what I look for from movies and what I still want to feel when I watch new ones.
Every time I rewatch this film I am left speechless by all the potential that was exploited and at the same time the potential that was left abandoned and unused. I will never understand what the heck R.S. had in mind when he decided to discard from the cut released in theaters the scene where the engineer talks, but more importantly if you have the formula that works (and that you used in Alien) for building the characters in such…
I believe that the foundation for a sci-fi film is to build a reality that can appear solid and believable; I don't want to have to think that what I'm watching is crumbling because of the lack of care devoted to its creation. Mickey 17 is everything sci-fi should be from a technical and artistic standpoint, glad that good works pop up now and then to enjoy.
A simply unreachable milestone.
