If I was ten years younger, I would be entranced by this film, viewing it as a piece that totally relates to me and my adolescent mind. Instead, I'm frustrated with it because it's trying so, so, so hard to be quirky - "I'm not like the other films!" Yes, it's artfully put together. Yes, it has heaps of beautiful shots, but as for the backbone of the narrative...where is it? Being cutesy can only get you so far.
I love nothin’ more than tucking myself into bed with a tome dedicated to this starlet or that Old Hollywood studio and, as someone who has dedicated hours upon hours reading about the golden era, I should be a target audience for this film. I should BE the audience, whether or not Chazelle aims for mainstream appeal.
