The Brutalist

2024

★★★★★ Liked Watched

“No matter what the others try and sell you, it is the destination, not the journey."

Not only is The Brutalist a monumental cinematic achievement — coming in at only 10 million USD despite its flawless production and high quality storytelling — but it’s indisputably the greatest film of the year and a new all-time favourite for me. Genius is rarely more prevalent than it is here, as each and every element — from the score to the cinematography —…

Conclave

2024

★★★★★ Liked Watched

“Is this what we’re reduced to? Considering the least worst option?”

Conclave presents one of the most masterful and profound works of political and religious — because when are the two EVER seperate — genius I’ve seen in some time. Stirringly relevant, provocative and with bitingly concise commentary it manages to be a riot for its entire 2 hour runtime, never loosening its grip for even a second. I don’t want to speak too early — having yet to see…

All the King's Men

1949

★★★ Liked Watched

A fairly compelling, albeit uninspired depiction of politics; however, it remains depressingly relevant and is a solid reflection on the corruptive qualities of power not just now but always. There’s a certain zest to some of the earliest Best Picture winners, including this one, that is lacking — the film itself feels devoid of personality or creative liberty. It’s an engaging story — both well written and well performed — but the same kinds of films have been made over…

The Phoenician Scheme

2025

★★★½ Liked Watched

I always feel so alienated by Wes Anderson’s work. Obviously, his monotone almost Brechtian approach to storytelling is supposed to draw attention to the quality of his filmmaking. But watching The Phoenician Scheme, I felt myself being surprisingly moved as the story unfolded. Anderson succinctly explores corporate greed, family and religion without ever crowding his work. It’s a largely generic moral about love and family being more fulfilling than money but Anderson earns it in his unique way.

I don’t know…

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

2025

★★½ 1

Concluding a franchise is no small feat. Doing it in a satisfying way even less so. If anyone was to achieve the impossible, it was supposed to be the Mission: Impossible team. For the better part of three decades now — bar *fan-favourite* M:I 2 — Tom Cruise has led the way as the action genre’s messiah, repeatedly putting his life on the line and continuing to hone is craft in the pursuit of creating incredible content and lifelong memories for film…

Audrey

2024

And I thought the Roy family was dysfunctional? Audrey made for an exhilarating experience and is a particularly unique and exciting watch for me… TWO OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE IN THIS FILM! Not only that, but Audrey was filmed locally and as such there are countless cameos and locations I recognise. It’s a small film in scope, but this hardly gets in the way of its ambition which continually builds and builds. This wouldn’t be possible without fantastic performances…
