Godzilla - Retrospective

Finally going to commit and watch all 30+ movies with this big f’ing lizard. Will update with thoughts in the notes as I go.

Godzilla
★★★★

Godzilla Raids Again
★★★

Film #2 - Rewatch
Date Watched: 28/12/24

Didn’t a single thing that happened in this outside of that spiky villain popping up. It’s not bad. Not great, but not bad. Gets a little more action-heavy, but still retains the first film’s self seriousness. I laughed when they started watching the first film for research though. Also very fun that Godzilla is just a different Godzilla, but does that mean he’s really… raiding again?

Mothra vs. Godzilla
★★★½

Film #3
Date Watched: 29/12/24

Absolutely insane that the first two films are fairly straight faced and grounded and then this one has a cult worshipping giant eggs, an island with two inch tall women, and a gigantic moth monster that not only understands English but bargains with humans. Not a complaint though! Baby Mothra’s ugly as fuck, but boy can they fight. Should I watch Mothra? I feel like I should watch Mothra.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
★★★

Film #4
Date Watched: 30/12/24

Very fun and silly! Dedicating the whole first half to the story of a woman from Venus was… a choice. I enjoyed it, but missed my big Kaiju friends. Loved when they started translating Godzilla’s dialogue - absolutely wonderful hearing his thoughts on humanity and his lack of interest in saving it. They should integrate that into the Mosterverse.

Invasion of Astro-Monster
★★½

Film #5
Date Watched: 21/01/25

Watched over two nights. Didn’t love this. Monster fights were a lot of grabbing tails and jumping up and down until someone flew away. Godzilla’s victory dance was funny though and the aliens-curing-cancer plot is so absurd that I was kinda into it.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep
★★★

Film #6
Date Watched: 22/01/25

Godzilla’s in his vacation era. I liked the tropical setting and sea monster shenanigans of this one. Good score, very different and more upbeat. Ebirah is a fun character and I wish they became a Godzilla staple. Maybe the rock volleyball scene prevented that from happening… audiences just weren’t ready for its greatness!

Son of Godzilla
★★★

Film #7
Date Watched:02/02/25

Who is Godzilla's lover? Who is the mother? Moving ending. Didn't care for the human story, but I enjoyed that ugly baby using Godzilla's tail as a jumprope.

Destroy All Monsters
★★★½

Film #8
Date Watched:03/02/25 - Rewatch

Forgot to add this one to the list until a month and a half later, so my review's a little foggy. I saw this when I was a kid after having only seen the first two Godzilla films and it was a giant leap into silly. Watching it now, years later in the context of the franchise as a whole, and I can see the natural progression of how we got here. It's a lot of fun. A big ole monster brawl. Good stuff. The new MonsterVerse films need to do their own version of this. Godzilla x Kong: Destroy All Monsters would go hard.

All Monsters Attack

Film #9
Date Watched: N/A

I tried watching this, but my god I couldn't do it... Too many Godzilla's to watch... I'm skipping this... It’s cool that his son learned to speak Japanese though! Good for him.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah
★★★★

Film #10
Date Watched: 15/02/25

This one was awesome. Felt stylistically different than the others and stages it’s monster brawl with a unique child perspective on Earth’s destruction. Maintains that grand, fun, colourful approach to the big monster battles, but returned to the sense of scope and social commentary we haven’t really had since the original. This one felt grounded, even with a scene where Godzilla flies. Hedorah is my favourite villain so far, I’d love to see them come back in the new films. So much potential. That first shot of Godzilla in front of the sunset was incredible. Big fan of this one!

Godzilla vs. Gigan
★★★

Film #11
Date Watched: 24/03/25

Kinda impressed that we're over 10 films deep and the human subplots haven't just been recycling plots. Cockroaches in human skins creating a Godzilla theme park? Sure, why not! Gigan is sick. Loved the chest blade that's the coolest thing ever.

Godzilla vs. Megalon
★★½

Film #12
Date Watched: 25/03/25

Didn't love this, but also kinda loved that the plot is just humans going "fuck it, let's build a robot" and somehow this robot can grow to the size of Godzilla. Final brawl is fun. I liked the Godzilla + Jet Jaguar handshake at the end. You can really tell this was meant to be a Jet Jaguar solo film until they shoehorned in Godzilla and co. I'll be honest, I didn't give this one my full attention.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
★★★

Film #13
Date Watched: 11/05/25

Hadn't watched a Godzilla film in over a month and, despite this one feeling a bit stale, these are still so fun and easy to watch. Can't say I was super into the human story and the weird aliens hunting down a statue, but I loved Mechagodzilla. Their introductory crash zooms were incredible. What was up the giant evil easter bunny lol?? I think I'll forget most of this in a week unfortunately, but it wasn't terrible.

Terror of Mechagodzilla
★★★
