legitimately spooky and a surprising degree of staying power for its humble runtime. dug the "i'm at your house" vibe of the apparition, the little philosophical blip, the vast wilderness/photo lab contrast, but that dim stairway shot takes the cake, something encroaching from where reality is cut off and there's nothing left to do but resign yourself to it. a piece truthful to the sort of non-sequitur dream logic

early-Nolanesque, telefilm looking, acab-coded christmas film, very transitional, flimsy and midbrow. wouldn't really call this a dud in Refn's filmography (he doesn't have one!) but it doesn't resemble his Pusher era at all, and whatever he was doing here i feel he completely scrapped going forward into Valhalla Rising. love John Turturro but his range is sooo muted here, i don't think he's fit for these stiff and emotionally stunned characters, he needs to go off the rails like with the Coens'. odd little t
