Despite this fim being incredibly bleak, it's surprisingly peaceful. The contrast between the harsh story and soft, steady pacing delivered a great sense of sorrow that built up over the course of the runtime and delivered on a very satisfying release at the end.

First Reformed is a beautifully executed film, with striking image composition, excellent performances and very confronting themes to sink one's teeth into. Definitely not one for a day where you need a pick me up because this film will have you questioning your humanity, the faith you believe yourself to hold, and your capacity for harm. It is stunning, unrelenting, and will surely haunt me for a very long time.

Bad bad bad and what's worse is that it's based on a true story and it felt like such a letdown to the real thing. The lighting and colour grade was so flat, the script felt so cheap and all the major plot points went to completely unearned extremes. The performances were none of anyone in the cast's best despite there being some fantastic names in the line up. Just felt like a mess that really could have been up there with the likes of Julie and Julia if they'd baked the script a bit longer and the cinematographer more than one light to shoot with. Disappointing to say the least! Genuinely could have been a heart warmer for the ages and they slopped it!

I'm always so blown away by the fabrics, I know it's such a small thing to be so endeared to in such a beautiful and special film, but there is something so important about the textiles to me. The physical backdrop they provide to the fabric of domestic life is something that is very rarely portrayed. Both this and In the Mood for Love come to mind as incredibly important examples of this in filmmaking. In Good Morning there's this perfectly balanced combination of worn textiles in the Kimono, the traditional dyes and weaves throughout the house, and the fabrics that are directly maneuvered by the characters. Fabric is as much a character in this film as the people are, providing this sense of movement, colour, and expression within a very rigid society and cultural context. Never ceases to amaze me that something as simple as fabric can play such an integral part of a story.

While the character of Mr. Fox still pisses me off to no avail I still enjoy this particular adaptation because of the absolutely phenomenal performances from literally the entire cast, the utterly brilliant art direction and animation style, and quite possibly one of the greatest soundtracks ever put together for a film. We lost Phillip Seymour Hoffman too soon, there really wasn't a role he couldn't handle. I didn't really know anything about Truman Capote before watching this and his story is so fascinating. This film felt a lot like a spiritual predecessor to Mindhunter and really genuinely tugged at the possibility of empathizing with a killer - really challenging the notion of humanity and very forcefully challenging the viewer's own judgement on capital punishment. I can't wait to read In Cold Blood and re-read To Kill a Mockingbird again.

Menacing as hell and has given me a new appreciation for how terrifying the perspective of a child can be. The sense of powerlessness and lack of understanding the children go through in this story made me feel an incredibly innate sense of dread that reminded me of times in my own childhood where I wasn't heard and the danger I faced ignored. I honestly think this film is such a timeless example of children being one of the most misunderstood, underrepresented and discriminated against groups of people worldwide and everyone should be forced to watch it to understand how easily a child can slip through the cracks by the hand of a charming and supposedly good natured adult. Genuinely frightening and before it's time! Also hymns are fucking terrifying in the right context.

Interesting and not the way I thought it was going to go - it got spoiled for me years ago but not even in the right way so I can't really say it lived up to the expectations because they were incorrect to begin with.

Sam Rockwell is an outstanding performer and for basically a one man show he was effortlessly easy to watch and did a great job giving each version of the character a slightly different vibe.

Really brilliant performance from Casey Affleck in a pretty decent western primarily let down by its editing and fundamental lack of women. I know I'm biased against fade-to-blacks but there were far too many in this and the runtime felt a bit stretched. You could get half an hour of storytelling back if you cut the fade-to-blacks out, but even then this film needed a half hour at least cut down. I do enjoy a film where the climax is revealed in the title, it keeps you on edge for the entire time which I did enjoy. The women collectively had about maybe 7 minutes of dialogue and most of it was "wash yer hands for supper" which is boring and average. We can do better than this.

A pretty effortless masterclass in keeping your story clean and simple. I had the pleasure to see this for the first time at the Sydney Opera House accompanied by the live Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Gladiator stands the test of time because of its commitment to a classic narrative structure. Who among us can resist the story of a hero overcoming his greatest foes and battles in order to restore his name. Throw in a beautiful score and a few great actors and you've got yourself an all timer. I was really delighted to see so much of Denis Villeneuve's Dune in the depths of Gladiator. Hans Zimmers sonic motifs and Villeneuve's boyhood love for Ridley Scott really shine through and it was a great sight to see as a lover of Dune. Not to mention the bravery in killing off the protagonist the minute he solves his problems, phenomenal ending to a fantastic movie.

We embarked on watching the complete set of adaptations of Douglas Sirk's 1955 "All That Heaven Allows" and I was pretty disappointed in this interpretation. I found it too attached to the story of a queer white man instead of the actual characters who are meant to take center stage. Centering a white story over that of an interracial relationship meant to be the central plot felt incredibly misplaced and ignorant. And while the theatrical cinematography and scoring was objectively very beautiful, it ultimately felt like a distraction from actually exploring the themes of societal exclusion and racial prejudice that the film was presenting as it's take on the original forbidden love story. It felt fake and dishonest and I really didn't like it unfortunately.

What really struck me was how the women spoke to each other, true conversations and moments between them to think and consider. The women felt like a representation of genuine friendship in the time and I really connected with that aspect of the film in a way that I haven't with a lot of others from its time. I wish the ending weren't so abrupt but alas sometimes the studio forces its cuts. Lovely!

Spike Jonze needs to get off his ass and make another movie. Still slaps to this day, nice to come back to after a long while seeing it, felt fresh and surprisingly still relevant. Maybe even more so now. I really love the soundtrack and costuming especially, and the way it's lit. It's a future I wish I could live in.

I watched ten seconds of the trailer and knew I'd love this. Any kind of big business movie that changes the game of the industry is going to do it for me. Funny, stressful, gritty and full of heart! I'm not always the biggest fan of sports movies but this balanced it well and I really felt endeared to all the players. Top notch.

There is so much to think about and reflect on and I will do so happily for a long time coming. Naomi Watts is a fucking incredible actor, Rebecca Del Rio's voice is from heaven. I can see SO much media that I have loved in my life stemming from themes and images in this film. I was transfixed and transported. I can't wait to watch it again.

Easily one of the most beautiful portrayals of Mexico I've ever seen. I loved everything about the filmmaking in Queer, Luca Guardagnino is one of the most important directors of the modern age, and I will pay attention to everything he makes - unfortunately, some adaptations are just not for me. I inherently don't like the source material and just can't see what Luca sees in it but I understand those who are connected to the source material will feel a completely different way. Sometimes you just have to go along for the ride and ire the quality of the filmmaking and recognize that the story itself is just not a flavor you expected to taste. It is what it is!

I usually don't love stories set in contemporary landscapes; I find many of them insincere and unable to fully grasp the nuances of modern life without making caricatures out of their characters. Matt and Mara is a fine exception to this. It had a true gentleness to it that I really appreciated. Matt Johnson couldn't have been a better choice in casting, and Deragh Campbell was a formidable balance to Matt's energy. The exploration of a sudden and unexpected end to a best friendship is something that doesn't usually get treated with such subtlety, and I'm glad there was no unnecessary soapy drama. Only the things in between feelings were actually revealed, and I found myself reflecting on lost friendships and unlived pathways I could have had. Very soft and very special. I really enjoyed it.

Emo Batman Mr. Vengeance Robert Pattinson fucking rules so hard. This is the only version of Batman that I actually understand why every dude is so obsessed with this franchise. I get it ok? Batman is awesome. Paul Dano's Riddler being incel school shooter coded is so fucking scary and impactful. Colin Farrel as the penguin is unrecognizable. Gotham city entering it's David Fincher noir phase is fantastic. Matt Reeves took the best of everything from the various iterations of this franchise and made it into something that felt new, relevant to the times, and something I could finally understand. I'm on board. Batman forever.

Not one bit of plot but lots of laughs and we watched it while we were losing our minds trying to move house and everything but the TV was packed. I needed something ridiculous, and this served its purpose dutifully.

Adam Sandler sort of just goes on holiday with his actual real-life friends, gets a huge tax write-off out of it, and casts the most unbelievably beautiful woman as his wife. Gotta respect the play.

This review may contain spoilers.

Sometimes, people make things that include incredibly gratuitous and unnecessary depictions of horse deaths, and they're wrong for that. The Nest was a very pretty movie with nothing much to say. I was utterly uninterested in Jude Law's performance or character, which is odd for me, considering I usually love him in anything he's in. It just goes to show that even a beloved actor can falter under the stewardship of average writing. Carrie Coon was great, and I would have preferred more focus on her character instead. The Nest felt like a poorly executed knockoff of Death of a Salesman that wasn't saying anything new about money and work or adding anything interesting to the format of the domestic dichotomy between men and women. Overall a bit of a yawn.

I left this film ready to call it an historic achievement for all of cinema, and in many ways it still is. I was floored by the filmmaking. I knew very quickly when this film poster made it to my eyes that I would love it, and I did. I love architecture, I love Adrien Brody, I love midcentury design and the beautiful colour palettes that emerge from it in the medium of film. It is a brilliant story. The inclusion of an intermission was an incredible strategy. Everything about this film was set to be perfect, and then I found out that elements of generative AI were used to enhance the performances and speed up the production design and post-production process.

It is a slippery slope, and the filmmakers deny that they are on it. You have to draw a line somewhere, and I am drawing it here. It cannot be judged fairly against films that used exclusively human power to make it in awards like the Oscars. Hungarian is a difficult accent to learn, but so is Australian. It's not any more or less special than any other accent. I would have rathered a dubbed actual Hungarian speaker reading the letters in VO. I would rather see Adrien Brody's best attempts and minor imperfections than a glossed-over version made perfect by software.

Art is imperfect. AI in art is wrong. Filmmaking doesn't need it; it doesn't want it. For these reasons, I cannot give it the five stars I wish I could have given it. What a monumental film and an even more so monumental disappointment.

I will endlessly adore David Lynch's deep respect and love in his portrayal of women, his telling of their struggles and his depiction of sexual violence. I seeing this film for the first time with my father when I was 18 and being able to have a genuine discussion about rape and assault, something I had never ever been able to broach with him before. Blue Velvet is beguiling and confronting. I am grateful to be able to watch it again and again and find new meaning in it each time. The story had an almost sequel like second half which I appreciate they didn't turn into a franchise. Just one good action movie packaged up into a sturdy runtime.
