Probably not very brave in of writing (practically identical to the animated original) but for the first time we can see the potential of these live action remakes, with actors and sets capable of giving new nuances and details compared to the animated film.
The final result is not perfect but is enough to make it the best live action remake operation I've ever seen.

Watching one of Wes Anderson's latest films is a strange experience: on the one hand his works are increasingly refined, visually stimulating and technically impeccable, on the other the plots seem increasingly repetitive, confused and no longer have the heart and originality of his early works.
Perhaps in Anderson's case the visual splendor could be enough to justify watching one of his films but we have less and less fun doing it and this is the greatest shame.

It's a stupid film... very stupid... maybe too stupid but it's fully aware of it and does not hide it from the first scene.
However, it's also visually acceptable, with some funny gags and a series of characters (simple and stereotypical but functional) that are right for a family film.
Maybe for once we should take off the mask of the fake film critic and accept that, a film about Minecraft, can be a funny and unpretentious comedy without reacting as if every film is an insult to our hypothetical intelligence.

Dario Argento 4y6w2b Ranked https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/jackfolla/list/dario-argento-ranked/ letterboxd-list-52037668 Wed, 2 Oct 2024 12:30:54 +1300 <![CDATA[

1 - "Inferno" - Crazy, anarchic and ruthless, the Argento's "inferno" doesn't give a damn about the canons of classic cinema and makes a film of pure visual excellence, with a rambling plot but full of incredible visual shots, 40 years ago! Thanks to directors and films like this we can improve the art and move us forward as humanity, while it may not be the best and most efficient Argento version it's definitely my favorite one. A real Inferno
2 - "Deep red" - It's probably not a perfect film and everything that doesn't concern the main serial killer thread isn't up to par with the rest. But here, in a film almost fifty years old, Argento create the horror. Furthermore, the final revelation of the killer is one of the most beautiful and disturbing choices in the history of cinema. Thanks Dario, we love you
3 - "Suspiria" - Visually stunning, each frame is a work of art and the tension always remains very high. A film almost 50 years old that is still modern today. It's difficult to find flaws in a masterpiece like this, just for personal taste I prefer the crazier Argento of "Inferno"
4 - "Tenebre" - Argento's most underrated film. Fun, full of ideas and memorable scenes and with a finale full of twists that keep you glued to the screen. Here too the characters sometimes have strange behaviors but if Argento directs like this you should forget everything. (The whole sequence of the murder of the two lesbians is memorable)
5 - "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" - Argento's debut immediately shows us the director's great talent. A courageous thriller with flashes of horror (made more than fifty years ago!) with a direction and ideas that would still be modern today. As usual, the screenplay is not perfect and not all the characters are credible but in the tense scenes Argento's hand was already phenomenal.
6 - "The Stendahl Syndrome" - Very good first half, with an excellent opening sequence and a finally credible and disturbing villain, the second half is a little weaker but solid. One of Asia's best performances in her father's films
7 - "Phenomena" - Not everything works perfectly: some characters have absurd behaviors and some dialogues are not very believable. But Argento's direction is masterful and the quantity of brilliant and well-realized ideas erase most of the defects. And if you don't like the final sequence, from the discovery of the murderer to the lake scene, that's your problem. P.S. Jennifer Connely you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen
8 - "Door into Darkness: The Tram" - Excellent short movie where you can already glimpse all the quality that Argento will create in his next works. The screenplay has some weak parts but the final chase is pure quality
9 - "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" - The film with the greatest gap between the quality of the horror/thriller plot (sublime, with some of the best tense scenes of Argento's career) and the comedy subplots (atrocious and quite offensive, especially looking at them today). The film still remains enjoyable and fun (with a somewhat hasty ending) but Argento will find greater effectiveness with this type of story in his subsequent works.
10 - "Pelts" - Masters of Horror episode, fun and well made, with an higher budget it could have been even better. One of his best recent works.
11 - "Sleepless" - The first 20 minutes are a history of cinema, then some of the defects of the latest Argento emerge (poorly directed actors, delirious dialogues and a terrible ending) but compared to other recent works, in of tension and technique, it remains a little pearl.
12 - "Opera" - Argento's perfect direction accompanies a basic script with few good points. Some scenes are part of the history of cinema (everything concerning the crows, the scenes of torture and the shot through the door) but some choices ruin the complex of the film (the mannequin discovered after days and the whole final sequence, ugly and disconnected from the rest of the film)
13 - "Dark Glasses" - His most recent work has all the defects of Argento but with some nice sequences and a couple of murders worthy of his earlier works. 3 stars for the respect I feel towards him.
14 - "The Cat o'Nine Tails" - The only real misstep of Argento's early career. A film that is too long, confusing, with too many characters and an uncharming protagonist. Some things are pretty good such as the prologue (Argento's direction is still pleasant) and Karl Malden's character with the little girl but that's all. There will be much more successful thrillers from this director in the following years
15 - "Trauma" - Technically well done, with some nice Hitchock-style scenes and a brilliant killer weapon but with sometimes poor acting and a screenplay with so many problems (especially the killer's motivation at the end). Only Argento's hand saves this film from disaster.
16 - "Do you like Hitchcock?" - Television film that oscillates between boring and some interesting and inspired sequences. Unfortunately the acting of some of the protagonists and the once again terrible ending ruin it.
17 - "Jennifer" - The other episode of Masters of Horror directed by Argento is a great wasted opportunity: the basic idea is interesting but the realization is a waste and the ending, which could have been a nice twist , ends up predictable.
18 - "Mother of Tears" - Ugly, boring, sometimes ridiculous and with a terrible protagonist. The rating goes up a little for a fun ending with a bit of healthy splatter.
19 - "Phantom of the Opera" - Visually it wouldn't even be that bad and the music is excellent but it's a shame that the characters are among the ugliest and most ridiculous ever written by Argento and that the ghost is so changed that it makes the story lose the meaning of the entire transposition.
20 - "The Card Player" - Ugly and boring until the final battle which instead enters in the history of cinema as one of the ugliest and worst directed sequences of all time.
21 - "Dracula 3D" - Visually horrible and with the usual delirious behavior and dialogues of every characters. If you end up doing something like this maybe you should just stop.
22 - "Giallo" - A perfect summary of all the worst of Argento: Ridiculous and poorly written characters, crazy behavior, an unintentionally comical villain and a wrong and terribly staged ending. What a shit

  1. Inferno
  2. Deep Red
  3. Suspiria
  4. Tenebre
  5. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

Kiyoshi Kurosawa 4o1k1j ranked https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/jackfolla/list/kiyoshi-kurosawa-ranked/ letterboxd-list-54570355 Wed, 4 Dec 2024 05:13:29 +1300 <![CDATA[

1 - "Cure" - One of the director's masterpieces. Disturbing, ruthless and cruel, Cure terrorizes the spectator with one of the most disturbing serial killer stories in history. A film to reflect on for hours while continuing to discover possible interpretations. Impeccable direction, visually stunning and with a perfect ending. It's hard to find any flaws.
2 - "Pulse" - Kurosawa's scariest work is also his most pessimistic and ruthless work. The horror part is amazing and every ghost scene remains imprinted in the mind but behind the visual horror there is an even more frightening one, that of the human condition, of an inevitable solitude especially in a society like the Japanese one, strongly criticized here, increasingly connected by technology but increasingly alone. An unmissable film
3 - "Tokyo Sonata" - The master of horror changes genre and tries his hand at the dramatic film magnificently. Through the story of a family, its dramas and its problems, Kurusawa destroys the foundations of Japanese society by highlighting all its hypocrisies. With a series of remarkable acting performances, Tokyo Sonata is the splendid answer for those who, not loving horror, would like to get to know a master like Kurusawa
4 - "Retribution" - A beautiful mystery film, full of tension and which plays a lot with the viewer who isn't sure what to believe. Spectacular direction that makes every shot a small work of art. A well staged final twist. A deep and melancholic ending in true Kurusawa style. It only suffers from some narrative choices and a somewhat repetitive central part.
5 - "Chime" - Solid medium-length film with good tension, some notable scenes (probably one of the best murders in cinema history) and good constant tension. It probably would have benefited from more running time and the underlying theme, although well developed, is not exactly the most original ever seen
6 - "Creepy" - The flawed brother of "Cure". A good construction of the story, ed by a brilliant direction by Kurosawa, ends in an uninspired ending. Sharing many themes and having a plot very similar to "Cure" I don't know why they wanted to take such an obvious step back here. However, it's worth a watch for the direction and the excellent actors.
7 - "Charisma" - Metaphorical, complex, elusive film, shot with his usual mastery by Kurosawa. "Charisma" brings forward perhaps too many many themes and reflections (all very interesting) and in the end the result is a half-successful that risks alienating the viewer. I prefer Kurosawa when, despite not being banal and obvious at all, he maintains a more popular and easy approach
8 - "Seance" - A plot full of imperfections and inconsistencies is saved by Kurusawa's usual splendid direction. If you stop for a moment to think about everything that moves the plot forward it's a big problem but cinema isn't just that and we'll save Kiyoshi this time too

  1. Cure
  2. Pulse
  3. Tokyo Sonata
  4. Retribution
  5. Chime
  6. Creepy
  7. Charisma

M. Night Shyamalan 2s4z72 Ranked https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/jackfolla/list/m-night-shyamalan-ranked/ letterboxd-list-50515089 Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:45:50 +1200 <![CDATA[

1 - "The village" - The realization is so splendid that it overlooks all the usual flaws of Shyamalan, his most visually beautiful film.
2 - "Unbreakable" - The majestic direction of "the sixth sense" mixed with the most beautiful genesis of a superhero ever seen in cinema. Umbreakable mixes all the great themes of Shyamalan's filmography with one of his most beautiful and inspired of his stories. It's a shame for the too hasty ending which would have deserved a cure equal to the rest of the film
3 - "The sixth sense" - Wonderful film, too often reduced to the final twist (for me the least inspired part of the entire film). Shyamalan moves from horror to drama to comedy with a mastery and naturalness typical only of great directors. Too bad only for the final too explainable and do-gooder
4 - "Split" - Solid thriller that for once doesn't melt away at the end, remaining credible until the end. Incredible McAvoy.
5 - "Glass" - Shyamalan directs so well when he wants, Shyamalan writes characters so well when he wants, Shyamalan builds stories so well when he wants. Glass is all this and it is the worthy conclusion of a wonderful trilogy and the anticlimactic ending that makes you savor a decisive battle and then destroys everything with a frightening cynicism is perhaps the most beautiful twist of his career.
6 - "Signs" - Iconic classic. Full of great tense scenes, beautiful staging and great actors. Too bad the ending was too hasty and banal.
7 - "Knock at the cabin" - Shyamalan at his best, masterful direction for a weak story but which is elevated by his mastery.
8 - "The visit" - Interesting idea and execution, some excellently directed scenes that are truly disturbing and one of the best final twists in his filmography. But not all the scenes work and the child's rap...
9 - "The happening" - Film manifesto of Shyamalan's philosophy which creates an apocalyptic film where the enemy is nature. Very interesting idea and with some excellent ideas but the behavior (and acting) of many characters lower the level of the work.
10 - "Old" - If you add to the usual first interesting idea a series of characters who don't know how to behave and one of the sloppiest and most didactic endings in the story, the film suffers a lot. Too bad, even here, in some scenes Shyamalan proves to be a great director.
11 - "Lady in the water" - A little too spiritual and lacking in pathos for my tastes but, incredibly, for once, with one of the most beautiful endings (in of staging) of his filmography which almost saves the entire film.
12 - "Trap" - Even if I try I can't find anything working in Shyamalan's latest work (with the exception of the excellent Hartnett). Film that diss in the second part, human behavior so ridiculous, caricatural characters and absence of tension. I may not have understood it but I don't like this Shyamalan.
13 - "After earth" - Shyamalan tries to save something with some directorial and staging ideas. But I hate everything the two Smiths do and say and they're basically the only two speaking characters.
14 - "Wide Awake! - Boring and rhetorical as hell, full of clichés and honeyed scenes. Shyamalan will always talk about spirituality and religion in his works but fortunately he will no longer do so in such a sloppy and banal way. The first fjnal twist of his career is nice and it's incredible that only one year later he will direct The Sixth Sense
15 - "The Last Airbender" - Every Shyamalan film, even the worst ones, always have some well-directed sequence or something to say, this is just an atrocious disaster, ridiculous until its ending and the opening to a never-made sequel. So bad that it doesn't even seem directed by Shyamalan and perhaps this is its only good thing for us who loves his works.

  1. The Village
  2. Unbreakable
  3. The Sixth Sense
  4. Split
  5. Glass
  6. Signs
  7. Knock at the Cabin
  8. The Visit

AHS seasons ranked 2zl6x https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/jackfolla/list/ahs-seasons-ranked/ letterboxd-list-45201049 Sat, 6 Apr 2024 03:38:15 +1300 <![CDATA[

All the seasons of American Horror Story I've seen ranked:
#1 - Asylum: The masterpiece of the series. A perfect setting, an excellent construction for every character and an sharp critics of almost every aspect of American society of that period and of today (from religion to medicine, through moralism and unscrupulous ambition). The first half of Asylum is certainly the highest point reached by the series, with an icredible first part (the part almost entirely in the asylum) where the tension never drops while the second part gets lost a bit, indulges in a bit of exaggerated and not entirely motivated sentimentalism and does not have the same effectiveness of the first part but manages to rise again in the ending (one of the few rightly honest and not forcefully positive final of the series) which worthily closes this little masterpiece. Another note of merit for the whole cast, ahs probably won't have so much talent at its disposal again.
#2 - 1984: It's fun, with constant tension and a finally satisfying plot, full of memorable characters and successful twists. The ending is great even if as usual not everything has a worthy conclusion but each subplot has a sense and a logic and everything is narrated according to the story (and not to send some dull political message as often happens in other seasons). A small pearl, inserted in the general mediocrity of the last seasons of the show. Probably the season I would most enjoy watching again. And the constant references to the 80s, however exaggerated, work. The only flaw: I would have liked more explicit violence in the ending.
#3 - Freak Show: Is it perhaps too long? Yes. Could it have more horror scenes? Yes. There are too many characters and villains and not all of them work? Yes. But Freak Show also has an excellent setting and basic theme (the freaks), many character storylines and events worthily developed and concluded, great episodes (that about Pepper's story above all), iconic villains (twisty and dandy) and an excellent crescendo of pathos and tension that greatly reaches its peak in the conclusion. More dramatic than scary, at least in appearance, Freak Show talks about monsters and telling that it describes the true monstrosity of so-called normal people. And Bowie's songs elevate it all. Main flaw: I would have liked much more courage in of splatter and physical torture knowing the theme.
#4 - Cult: Ruthless against every aspect of the society it talks about, realistically scary, with an amazing Evan Peters and finally an ending, although not perfect, but certainly correct. Cult scares because it talks (finally!) , our defects and our fears, we are the monsters and we are more ruthless than any other monster or ghost. Too bad the subplot of Valerie Solanas and her cult that isn't as good as the rest of the story.
#5 - Coven: Full of excellent characters, with a good plot and an excellent ending, all strengthened by the very high quality and excellent acting level of the first seasons. You may like Coven or not, it's neither very horror nor very splatter and maintains a constant tone of a dark soap opera far from true horror, but you cannot deny the great direction and the excellent technical intuitions that are shown in every episode. Not my favorite season in of theme and tone but it can't get any lower than this in this classification. And if you're complaining about this ending, maybe you haven't seen much of the last seasons
#6 - Murder House: The beginning of everything. A classic setting and theme and a mix of all the things we will see later in the following seasons. It's a little too long but it has many plot twist and good subplots, it knows how to scare but also take its emotional breaks, the ending has some confused part and some questionable choices but overall it works (also giving a perfect incipit for the future Apocalypse which however will not be used properly). Murder House does its job perfectly and still today represents a little gem and paves the way for the future success of the series. The main flaws are the repetitiveness of the central episodes and an aesthetic that isn't always so good but given the last few seasons we regret works like this
#7 - Roanoke: The characters are banal and quite boring, the setting is nothing new and the moral themes are confusing and often left in the background. But Roanoke wants to be a season of pure horror and it succeeds, even taking on the genre's flaws and banalities, cruel and raw, with the sole intent of scaring and entertaining with some good splatter. The change of view of the second part and the idea of the fake documentary are really interesting, not so good all the love and sentimental relationships between the characters. Good if taken as a horror series on its own, sufficient overall for ahs
#8 - Hotel: The season starts off very well with a great setting, excellent characters and finally well written subplots. It continues well, with some ups and downs but with a couple of excellent episodes (the one on the Ten Commandments killer is incredible). It ends in a confusing and anti-climatic way, with some forgotten subplots and the main story that gets lost in an excessive mixture of good feelings and forced happy ending. The ending is often the main problem of many seasons. Liz Taylor's character is iconic, Lady Gaga is acceptable.
#9 - NYC: The season works until the discovery and resolution of the first serial killer then, episode by episode, collapses on itself until the last two delirious episodes, an attempt to tell a drama that is almost comical. That's a pity, the theme and the setting were excellent.
#10 - Red Tide: The story has potential but the authors manage the incredible result of ruining every single part of the plot with senseless choices and a crazy ending.Despite some nice ideas and a sufficiently disturbing setting, the characters and plot constantly seem like a parody of a previous season.
#11 - Apocalypse: It's difficult to briefly talk about everything wrong for me in this season: an intriguing first part that was soon forgotten to make space for the boring revival of season 3. Never incisive, without a theme that is never really clear, full of useless fan service, good fake sentiments and, maybe the worst thing, never scary with the exception of the first episode. What should be the "Avengers" season with references of the best previous seasons turns into the sum of all the worst defects of the show.
#12 - Death Valley: The part in the past is an funny parody of conspiracy theories but the part in the present is so bad and stupid that it also ruin the other one when the two have all together with one of the ugliest, stupidest, most emotionless endings of the entire show. Terrible.
#13 - Delicate: Stylistically horrible, with one of the most boring and uninspired settings of the show, never managing to scare, with questionable average acting and unintentionally comical characters. Furthermore, some of the main themes such as witches or motherhood have already been treated several times in previous seasons and in a much better way. Another unconvincing ending, full of open and never closed subplots, a too hasty pace and a very forced ending with a happy ending not suited to the general tone (or the one the show should have) of the show. It would have been a mediocre movie but it becomes a terribly boring season of a show. There is never a limit to the worst. P.s. The stalker revelation scene is the most delusional of the entire show (she looks at the dress for a moment and the culprit decides to tell everything)

  1. Asylum
  2. 1984
  3. Freak Show
  4. Cult
  5. Coven
