Mamaro Hosoda has been a filmmaker I've been eager to get into for the past few years. I have been trying to expand my horizons when it comes to foreign films and Japan has created some of my all time favorite animated films.
Fortunately, a lot of this film really worked for me. The unique take on time travel was one that made for some incredibly entertaining sequences. The film also had really strong buildup that lead to a twist that didn't feel forced or out of place.
Where the film falls apart a little is the second act, it doesn't really feel like the plot is progressing and it focuses on a few subplots that don't build up to that much in the end, I would have rather the film taken the time to create some more tangible conflict like it does in the first and third act. There were also one or two character decisions made by the main characters that didn't make too much sense but those didn't bother me too much.
Even if parts of the film feel much weaker than others, the good parts are definitely enough to justify the film as a whole and it was still a very enjoyable experience overall.
