Jedidiah Rose’s review published on Letterboxd:
Robert Wise's film is a richly atmospheric horror picture, wherein the the chills and thrills are a product of the cerebral nature of Eleanor's journey in this film, is the house truly haunted or is the mind of this woman cracking under extreme pressure from unresolved trauma that she's brought into this house with her? It's a fascinating journey all the same, and Julie Harris plays it well to her credit.
I do wonder if it was necessary to stretch proceedings out to the better part of the two hour mark, I think the film feels it's length somewhat in this regard, but a combination of good performances, wonderful production design and tight direction makes this a very worthwhile experience to sit down with, even six decades on from it's original release.
