Although 2001: A Space Odyssey may beat this film in SFX, Solaris proposes something about humanity through the Sci-Fi frontier story that hits you like a ton of bricks.
You need to come into the film with the expectation it will be a very slow burn, but the pay off is worth it. In a very Tarkovsky way, the silence and space shrouds the scenes with a truly eerie quality.
You almost forget the fact you’re viewing the characters off world, because you become engulfed in the depth of the study of each person and how the character sheds light on the theme.
Cinematography is beautiful, the anamorphic lens’ especially; the acting is captivating; phenomenal production design; great direction and world building from Tarkovsky as usual!
I will be thinking about Solaris for a long time. And now I’m scared to go to sleep…
