Tonight was genuinely the most bizarre night of my life. I do not say this lightly as someone who used to go to raves in the desert and do enough MDMA to sedate an elephant, yet it was a trip to the cinema on my near-200th day of sobriety that left me more intoxicated, confused, and alive than any other experience thus far. What follows is my thought process throughout the night:

The film starts and I spend the first…

The Apprentice

★★ Watched

One of my favorite topics brought up often in film discourse is the worst movie you have seen with an all-time great acting performance, yet I have never had a good answer that I could give with confidence. That was, until I watched Ali Abbasi's The Apprentice.

"Her" is a beautiful and heart wrenching take on artificial intelligence that I had not yet seen done previously on film. Everything about this movie from the story, to the cinematography, to the acting is all around just incredible. I was absolutely blown away by Scarlette Johansson's voice work; it may be the best voice acting I have ever heard! Just amazing work all around here.

From the opening scene X felt like Ti West's love letter to 70's slasher films. Everything in this movie from the aesthetic to the editing and even the acting just felt so vintage horror and made for such a fun ride. There was gore, there was sex, there was everything a fan of classic horror wants and needs. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel or bring anything new to the genre, it was an incredibly fun ride that I will be sure to watch over drinks with friends sometime down the road.
