Inside Llewyn Davis

2013

A moody, meandering look at a folk singer stuck in a loop of almost-success, carried by Oscar Isaac’s quietly gripping performance (and the fact that he can actually sing). It’s unmistakably a Coen Brothers film; bleakly funny, slightly surreal, and filled with odd detours that lead nowhere on purpose. You don’t need to love folk music to appreciate the vibe, but if you like your stories unresolved and a little bruised, this one sticks.

Sinners plays like Legends of the Fall wandered into Boardwalk Empire, then got bit by From Dusk till Dawn. Set in the Jim Crow South with prohibition, religion, and just enough blood to stain the altar, it’s less about vampires and more about the people who already lost their humanity. The Assessment

2024

Well made. Well acted. But it leans too hard on trauma to do the heavy lifting. The themes of loss, parenthood, illusion of safety and sacrifice are there but the writing pushes so hard it starts to feel forced. The sci-fi setting is strong but exists mostly to heighten the tension. I wanted to be moved but felt manipulated. 3.5 out of 5 oh no they did not’s.
