Valérie Donzelli, French director and actress born in 1973 in Épinal.

Initially an actress, Valérie Donzelli gained attention in the early 2000s, particularly for her role in Martha... Martha by Sandrine Veysset. She then moved behind the camera and directed her first feature film, The Queen of Hearts, a quirky romantic comedy, in 2009. In 2011, she directed Declaration of War, an autofiction co-written with Jérémie Elkaïm that portrays the battle of two parents facing their young son's illness. The film was a major public and critical success.

She then adapted a screenplay by Jean Gruault, originally written for François Truffaut, into Marguerite & Julien. In 2021, she ventured into television with a feminist family saga, Nona et ses filles. Just the Two of Us won the César for Best Adaptation in 2024. In parallel, Donzelli works as a producer and continues her acting career, both in her own films and with directors such as Audrey Diwan, Sophie Fillières, and Bertrand Bonello.

To paraphrase William S. Burroughs, whose work runs through Cronenberg's, the whole selection reveals a strong taste for cinema that "rushes at us, crushes us with its leopard-man claws, tearing off fingers and toes like one does to opportunistic crabs."

French director born in 1955 in Paris.

Yolande Zauberman began her career alongside Amos Gitai before directing her first film, Classified People (1987). This documentary about apartheid, shot clandestinely in South Africa, already outlines the contours of her cinema: Zauberman has continually questioned the absurdity of oppressive political situations through their impact on the intimacy of individuals. Confronting taboos and silences—particularly in M, winner of the César for Best Documentary Film in 2019, where she addresses sexual abuse within the Orthodox Jewish community—she has created a body of work of profound humanity, broadcast and awarded worldwide. The relationships between communities or individuals living in the same space without sharing the same beliefs or views are at the heart of both her fiction and documentary films, from Moi Ivan toi Abraham (1993) to Would You Have Sex With an Arab? (2011). Her films are portraits of marginalized people, such as La Belle de Gaza (2024), which follows the journey of young Palestinian trans individuals in Tel Aviv.

Payal Kapadia, Indian filmmaker, was born in 1986 in Mumbai.

Payal Kapadia developed an early interest in cinema, particularly experimental cinema, which she discovered at film festivals in Mumbai.
While studying at the Film and Television Institute of India, she experienced her first political engagements. These experiences influenced her first feature film, A Night of Knowing Nothing, for which she received the Golden Eye award at Cannes in 2021, as well as a Special Mention at the Créteil International Women’s Film Festival.
Blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, the film takes a freeform approach to question the state of the world, playing on the ambiguities of images, echoing the post-truth era. She continues to explore this hybridization in All We Imagine as Light, a diptych fiction infused with documentary elements and an impressionistic dimension.
This portrayal of India through the stories of three women won the Grand Prize at Cannes in 2024.

Austrian filmmaker, born in Munich in 1942.

The son of actor parents, Michael Haneke studied philosophy, psychology, and the dramatic arts at the University of Vienna. After his début in theatre, where he staged works by Goethe, Kleist, Strindberg, and Duras, he became a television director, then turned to film.

His first feature, The Seventh Continent (1989), inaugurated his Austrian trilogy known as “emotional glaciation”. The filmmaker’s style was already apparent through the X-ray vision of his almost clinical staging of human impulses and feelings. Later, he would endlessly and starkly reveal the violence of the contemporary world, all the better to explore the “ordinary evil” of our societies – from Funny Games to The Piano Teacher, Caché to The White Ribbon. His œuvre, richly endowed with a dozen films, has received the highest honours, including two Palmes d’or at Cannes. In 2018, Martin Scorsese sent a letter to Cédric Klapisch.

In it, the ever-ionate cinephile discusses the choices of films that make up his lists (yes, there are several), available on LaCinetek. He reflects on the challenges inherent in such an exercise, especially when it comes to expressing preferences in cinema.

Martin Scorsese gave LaCinetek two lists: a formative one and and this one, an alternative list just as extensive, eclectic and rich.

Spanish film director, born in Banyoles (Catalonia) in 1975.

After studying philology and literature at the University of Barcelona, Albert Serra switched to cinema. His works take an original approach and explore the great figures of the past, both literary and real, starting with Honor of the Knights (2006), a free adaptation of Don Quixote, followed by Birdsong (2009) and Story of my Death, which features a meeting between Casanova and Dracula (winner of the Golden Leopard at Locarno in 2013). For The Death of Louis XIV, a masterly chiaroscuro work starring Jean-Pierre Léaud, he won the Prix Jean Vigo, before directing Roi Soleil in 2018, an experimental variation on the same theme. The following year, Liberté, starring Helmut Berger, tells the story of libertines expelled from the court of Louis XVI. In 2022, Pacifiction broke away from historical painting for a suspended dive into the political arcana of a Polynesian island. A great critical success, the film offered Benoît Magimel an extraordinary playground, which earned him the César for Best Actor in 2023

French director and screenwriter, born in 1962 in .

Dominik Moll's ion for cinema began when he discovered the films of Alfred Hitchcock. He studied at the City University of New York, where he made his first short films, and at IDHEC, where he met Gilles Marchand and Laurent Cantet. His second film, the thriller With a Friend Like Harry (2000), was a big hit with audiences and critics alike. In his subsequent films (Lemming, The Monk, News From Planet Mars, Only the Animals), Moll continued to explore, through different genres, the disruption of everyday life as it struggles with the irrational. He has also made two forays into the series, with The Tunnel (2013) and Eden (2019), in which he tackles the delicate subject of refugees. His latest film, The Night of the 12th, about an unresolved police investigation, was a favourite at the 2023 Césars awards. Most of the scripts for his films were written with Gilles Marchand, whom he also co-wrote for Black Heaven and Into the Forest.

Francis Veber, a French director and screenwriter born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1937.

After working as a journalist, Francis Veber dedicated himself entirely to writing. The public success of one of his early plays, "The Kidnapping" (1968), encouraged him to pursue this path. He then began a career as a screenwriter and penned numerous successful comedies, such as Yves Robert's The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe (1972) and Édouard Molinaro's A Pain in the Ass (1973). He soon transitioned to directing with The Toy (1976), and continued his fruitful collaboration with Pierre Richard in La Chèvre (1981) and The ComDads, where the actor formed a duo with Gérard Depardieu. In the 1980s, Francis Veber moved to the United States, working as a script doctor for Disney and directing the American remake of The Fugitives. Upon his return to , his play The Dinner Game and its film adaptation achieved immense success. In 1999, Jacques Villeret won the César Award for Best Actor for the role of François Pignon, Veber's signature character who appears throughout his filmography: a modern innocent, struggling to navigate the cruelty of the world around him.

His list of favorite films includes Unforgiven directed by Clint Eastwood, A Night at the Opera directed by Sam Wood and Soylent Green directed by Richard Fleischer.

Initially an actress, Valérie Donzelli gained attention in the early 2000s, particularly for her role in Martha… Martha by Sandrine Veysset.

Directors' lists 6h3e3y Kleber Mendonça Filho recommends https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/lacinetek/story/directors-lists-kleber-mendonca-filho-recommends/ letterboxd-story-38349 Tue, 27 May 2025 02:30:02 +1200 <![CDATA[

His list of favorite films includes Black God White Devil by Glauber Rocha, Scum by Alan Clarke and Blockade by Sergei Loznitsa.

An emblematic filmmaker from Brazil, Kleber Mendonça Filho took classes in journalism before becoming a film critic and programmer. From 1990 onwards, he signed short experimental videos with an inventive eye. In the 2000s, he created short films such as the fantastical film-novel Vinil Verde (presented at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2005) and Recife Frio (a 2009 mockumentary about the curious cooling of the climate). He then started making feature-length fiction films, with Neighbouring Sounds (2012), Aquarius (in official selection at Cannes in 2016), and Bacurau (Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Festival). An independent author-producer, Mendonça Filho affirms the political specificity of his gaze, probing the impact of global capitalism on his native region. Fuelled by an original and non-naturalist cinephilia, his work draws inspiration from the social movement of Cinema Novo and the revival of the genre film, such as burlesque, soap opera, the western, or Carpenter-style chimeric horror. In 2023, his documentary Pictures of Ghosts was presented at Cannes in the Séances spéciales section.

In 2025, his film The Secret Agent earned him the Best Director prize at Cannes, while Wagner Moura received the Best Actor award for his performance.

On the occasion of the centenary of the French Open tennis tournament, and to celebrate the start of Roland-Garros, LaCinetek draws a connection between tennis and cinema in a selection where the match is played both on the court and in the frame.

From the chic grass courts to the more humble grounds, tennis runs through films either humorously or with tension, through mimed matches, duels at a distance, or scenes with meticulously crafted dramaturgy. Realism is captured through reverse shots, bodies converse mid-air, and the direction, as taut as a net, makes its impact. Cinema captures the movement, the stakes... and sometimes the accident. Because a set is built through rebounds, breaks, and cuts. And often, everything changes with a backhand, a decisive point, a winning game.

The films to discover in the spotlight:

À propos de Nice directed by Jean Vigo and Boris Kaufman
Strangers on a Train directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday directed by Jacques Tati
Tea and Sympathy directed by Vincente Minnelli

"We are in the future. Here is tomorrow, which reigns today on Earth." - René Char

Looking at tomorrow with the eyes of yesterday—this is the strange time travel LaCinetek invites you to take this month.

Imagining the future has always been a way of observing the present from a singular perspective. From Metropolis (1927) to Her (2013), the films in our selection explore the relationships between humans and machines and question the transformations of both the human body and the social body. While giving pride of place to imagination, these works expand our perceptions of reality and project onto the screen the potentialities that the present holds. Even when we sometimes recognize ourselves in them with dread, these cinematic prophecies, even if they don't come true, fuel our representations of the future. Ten films to question the future or, better yet, face it.

Featured films:

Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang
Her directed by Spike Jonze
eXistenZ directed by David Cronenberg
Akira directed by Katsuhiro Otomo
The Last Man on Earth directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow
Tokyo! directed by Bong Joon Ho, Leos Carax and Michel Gondry
Escape from New York directed by John Carpenter
Born in Flames directed by Lizzie Borden
La Jetée directed by Chris Marker
Take Shelter directed by Jeff Nichols

On the occasion of the European Night of Museums, on Saturday, May 17, LaCinetek s forces with Culture to explore the second art in the seventh: sculpture in cinema.

Whether it populates museums, emerges from a creator's gesture, or witnesses a declining era, the statue on screen is always meaningful. Whether it opens or closes a film, whether it is political or decorative, it plays with the idea of a frozen image and the confusion it generates: an unsettling strangeness, between petrified characters and statues that come to life.

While waiting to visit the Rodin Museum like Jean-Pierre Léaud or the Archaeological Museum of Naples like Ingrid Bergman, LaCinetek invites you to contemplate statues through the storytelling and aesthetics of the filmmakers featured in its selection.

His list of favorite films includes All That Heaven Allows by Douglas Sirk, An Angel at My Table by Jane Campion and The Last Laugh by F.W. Murnau.

American director, born in 1961 in Los Angeles.

Fascinated by the visual arts from a young age, Todd Haynes studied art and semiotics at Brown University. He first made waves in 1987 with Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a medium-length film told with Barbie dolls. Since then, he has consistently explored themes of gender, identity, and societal norms. His debut feature, Poison (1991), inspired by Jean Genet, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

Haynes gained wider acclaim with Safe (1995), which marked his first collaboration with Julianne Moore. He evoked David Bowie’s glam rock era in Velvet Goldmine (1998), and paid homage to Douglas Sirk’s 1950s melodramas in Far from Heaven (2002). In I’m Not There (2007), six actors—including Cate Blanchett—portrayed facets of Bob Dylan. He later directed the Emmy-winning miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011) and returned to feature filmmaking with Carol (2015) and Wonderstruck (2017), both selected for the Official Competition at Cannes Film Festival.
In 2021, he premiered The Velvet Underground, a documentary on the iconic band. His most recent feature, May December (2023), starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, was also selected for the Official Competition at Cannes and further cemented his status as a singular voice in American cinema.
In 2025, Todd Haynes will be honored with the Carrosse d'Or by the SRF during the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cristian Mungiu is a Romanian filmmaker born in 1968 in Iași. A leading figure of the Romanian New Wave, he first studied English literature before attending the University of Film in Bucharest. Early in his career, he worked as an assistant director on films like Bertrand Tavernier’s Capitaine Conan and Radu Mihăileanu’s Train of Life.

His second film, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) — a harrowing story of an illegal abortion under Ceaușescu — won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Mungiu continued his Cannes success with Beyond the Hills (2012), which won Best Screenplay and earned Best Actress awards for its two leads, and Graduation (2016), which won him the Best Director award (shared with Olivier Assayas). For the special feature on "The Hidden Side of the News" offered by Culture, LaCinetek invites you to view the filmmaker as an investigator.

In 1964, Gilles Groulx, a close figure of the direct cinema movement, declared: "A filmmaker is a journalist: he must inform and comment." Some directors took this literally and made it their mission to capture reality directly, camera in hand, in search of the truth. While some come from the journalistic world, like Zara Mahamat Yacoub, others engage in the practice of interviews and conduct their own investigations, such as Pasolini. Some also make use of journalistic material, retrieving television footage (e.g. Now!, Videograms of a Revolution), thus working on real images and their manipulation.

Through this selection, discover "the hidden side of the news" through the committed perspective of filmmakers who become journalists.

Una giornata particolare (1977) is now available on LaCinetek! A great reason to celebrate Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, and Ettore Scola, and with them, the golden age of Italian cinema!

Una Giornata is the story of two souls who seem to have nothing in common: a dissident intellectual and a housewife seduced by fascist propaganda. As the radio broadcast of Hitler’s visit to Mussolini echoes in the courtyard, they will nonetheless get to know each other, thus resurrecting a humanistic hope crushed under the spectacle of triumphant fascism. With this film, which remains sadly relevant today, Ettore Scola gives two roles that go against the grain to the iconic Italian actors, Mastroianni and Loren.

This legendary duo also shines in Marriage Italian Style (De Sica, 1964), a fresco on Naples’ matrimonial schemes, while Scola had already tackled the relationship between individuals and politics with his Roman fresco about friendship amidst the turmoil of the 20th century, We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974).

The films to discover in the subscription this month:
Una Giornata partricolare directed by Ettore Scola
Marriage Italian Style directed by Vittorio De Sica
We All Loved Each Other So Much directed by Ettore Scola

LaCinetek spotlights adaptations of French novels. Exploring the relationship between cinema and literature also means questioning how works circulate: while a successful adaptation often boosts the recognition of the original book, it also brings a renewed perspective to its reading. Sometimes, the film even replaces the book in the collective memory, with images overtaking words and sparking a rediscovery. From page to screen, stories travel across formats and undergo a formal transformation—trading literary devices for camera angles.

As part of the Year of the Sea, LaCinetek is teaming up with Culture for its editorial spotlight "Ecology & Oceans." Directors’ lists z3u16 Justine Triet recommends https://letterboxd.conexionsite.com/lacinetek/story/directors-lists-justine-triet-recommends/ letterboxd-story-36256 Tue, 15 Apr 2025 03:00:01 +1200 <![CDATA[

Her list of favorite films includes Woman in Chains by Henri-Georges Clouzot, Love in the Afternoon by Éric Rohmer, and See No Evil by Richard Fleischer.

Last week was LaCinetek's third edition of its Ciné-Club, held at our now classic address, the Christine Cinéma Club in Paris. On this occasion, we screened sex, lies, and videotape by Steven Soderbergh, presented by Justine Triet, and are now highlighting her list on LaCinetek.

Justine Triet is a French filmmaker, born in 1978 in Fécamp.

While studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she initially aimed to pursue painting, Justine Triet shifted her focus to editing and video. After graduating, she made her first video documentaries, filmed during student protests and in a slum in São Paolo. In 2011, her short film Two Ships won numerous awards, including at the Berlin Film Festival. This was quickly followed by her first feature film, Age of Panic (2013), which plays with the boundaries between reality and fiction, with several scenes filmed on the day of François Hollande's victory in the 2012 presidential election. With In Bed with Victoria (2016) and Sibyl (2019), Justine Triet became a master in depicting complex women on the brink of breakdown, navigating between depression and humor. To bring these characters to life, she partnered with Virginie Efira, offering her some of the best roles of her career.

With Anatomy of a Fall, the director won the Palme d'Or at Festival de Cannes in 2023 for her portrayal of the trial of a writer accused of killing her husband.
