I dunno, I mostly just felt bad for Hazel.

Dreadfully dull and self-serious. What a fuckin' plod, seriously.

Probably the best of the Polonia/McBride collaborations - kinda flat in the middle but generally appealing, spinning out a familiar story with a level of no-budget brio that pushes it through the weeds and into its frankly delightful finale. (Brett Piper's alien puppet, with its little bent legs and flipper hands and blinking cyclopean eye, is so much fun.) Also, most importantly, Jon McBride appears to be trying to play a normal person instead of whatever maximalist goofiness it is that he usually tries. His whole deal here is, what if I did Tom Skerritt in Alien instead of shouting all the time or yammering in a stupid accent or whatever. And I wholly that choice.

I think the key here is that the film, on some level, understands what a repulsive asshole the Dice persona is. So there's all sorts of little ways the film undermines his alpha-dog swagger - the guy in the club telling him nobody smokes anymore, the failure of his pistol during the cemetery car chase, Priscilla Presley literally telling him his homophobia isn't funny - which sands down the sharp edges just enough that this works as the ridiculous, catch-all cartoon it was intended as. Harlin directs the living shit out of it, and Daniel Waters finds a warped tone he'd expand on to great effect with Hudson Hawk. While there's nothing quite as daffy as Andie MacDowell speaking dolphin here, there's plenty of inexplicable touches - everything involving the koala, Fairlane's signature cocktail being a Sambuca milkshake, England being Aussie for some reason (or maybe Cockney, his accent is all over the place), Fairlane trying (and failing) to not ogle a busty corpse, a boat named Mighty Penis that houses at least two intimidatingly large dildos, Ed O'Neill gyrating and singing a song called "Booty Time," Lauren Holly tossing off lines like, "Milli Vanilli paid us off in bicycle shorts and hair extensions." A film whose myriad tonal hiccups and light meta touches play a lot better now than they did back in 1990, I suspect.

I feel like anarchism suits Mekas better than earnestness, but this is a generally compelling portrait of a man doing everything within his power to live up to his convictions and ideals, no matter the cost. The circular structure makes me think this would probably make a terrific double-bill with Cooper's Overlord.

Joyful Western pastiche that rolls merrily from one setpiece to another without concern for coherence. Cinema and genre as a space for play - the nod to Shoot the Piano Player feels instructive - and as a bottomless repository for creative energy. A movie can be whatever you want it to be, and that's the magic of it.

Amusing entry in the "fuck them kids" genre (folk-horror subgenre division). I assume the sight of famous Welsh performers getting got would have more of an impact if I knew who any of these famous Welsh performers were, but I can imagine the impact.

Enjoyably propulsive dose of lunacy. For all the giant accordion feet and squirting acid goiters and laser-light-show displays of kung fu magic, my favorite special effect here is Lo Lieh's sneaky and confident smirk, befitting his role as an omnipresent agent of chaos.

Well, that and Dopey the dragon. I wish me and Dopey were friends.

Boringly tryhard, like Joe Begos doing Death Race by way of Arena. A couple decent gore gags, but it's got neon lights where its brains should be.

130 minutes is just too much for this, but otherwise a solid followup, and Naomi Scott is absolutely on fire here, finding a hundred tiny ways to make each wide-eyed panic attack feel and look different from the previous.

Miike's doing some interesting stuff in the margins (who else would bring in Christopher Doyle as a digital avatar of chaos?), but he can't overcome the void at the center of the film. These kids are photogenic and bland and absolutely not up to the task of anchoring this incoherent cyberpunk sci-fi/tragic romance.

What gloriously lunkheaded red meat this is. At times, it almost feels like it's intended as knowing spoofery (the mob guys driving away in a bullet-ridden car, Arnold solemnly intoning, "You should not drink and bake"), but it's mostly a dirt-dumb piece of action cinema that does everything it says is gonna do.

Right off the bat, this guy was out here making weird shit. Also, like a lot of his subsequent films, this runs out of steam about two-thirds of the way through but rallies for a great finale.

He really did start as he meant to go on, huh.

I also agree that Terminator 2 would be only improved by a healthy dose of sex and nudity, thanks for asking!

Very tidy - you can practically hear the screenplay's various pieces all neatly clicking together at every narrative beat - and very flimsy. A couple cute bits, but mostly an exercise in mechanics, and not nearly as clever as it evidently thinks itself.

Hartnett is great here, just the right combination of dissolute and casual and exasperated, and the action is surprisingly good. I especially dug how pointedly clumsy a lot of the close-quarters brawling is. Damn shame it's all mired in a post-Tarantino garbage flotilla of a script. I assume the success of Bullet Train is what gave this the green light, but the prominent chainsaw in the climax made me think this screenplay has probably been kicking around since - hell, maybe it was intended as a spec-script sequel to - Smokin' Aces. If that's where you're pulling your inspiration from, good luck and God bless but I'm out.

Incoherent, poorly constructed and desperately unfunny. The kind of cinematic UFO - a future pornographer plays a mafioso and romances Jane Russell in her last role while a Greek chorus of ex-boxers kvetches! - where it's genuinely enough to be aware of its existence. The experience of watching it does nothing to elevate it above a trivia-night footnote, though Russell, ever the professional, is trying mighty hard to locate a character in all this mess.

Having seen Lucky Kargo in a few black-and-white sexploitation features recently, I was not prepared to catch him here with a (presumably natural) fiery shock of bright red hair.

Fascinating inasmuch as the ostensible main character is barely there, and the star playing him has almost no notes to hit aside from "dying." That he comes off indelible anyway is partly because of Mason's undeniable presence - the kind of gravitas where one can command attention while mumbling and drifting in and out of consciousness is a potent gravitas indeed - and partly because the script smartly works the fading nature of the character into the fabric of it. Through the film, Mason's Johnny McQueen encounters a variety of people, all of whom see him as an extension of his deeds or a symbol of the larger conflict. He's a pariah, a bargaining chip, an artist's model, a hero, an albatross... anything and everything aside from a person. Meanwhile, the only soul who values him as a person, Kathleen Ryan's Kathleen, is searching for him in parallel to his futile search for a safe and quiet place to hide until the end. It's only when these two paths finally dovetail, when Johnny finally reunites with the one individual who sees him as a human being and not a bleeding abstraction, that the narrative can resolve itself in the only way it can. Haunting stuff.

The opening few minutes are a marvelous example of Big Dopey Wig cinema... and then all the air immediately leaks out of it after that.

...well, at least the neo-New Wave music videos that get spliced in aren't entirely awful

Probably would have watched this before Amityville VR if I'd known the latter was a quasi-sequel to this. Certainly explains some of the more inexplicable aspects of VR, anyway. At any rate, this one seems like it wants to be a normal movie and thus is a bit less interesting than its follow-up, though it does have the occasional inspired touch (the psychotic knife-wielding sexbot, for instance). Both of them mostly benefit from being directed by a guy who'd spent years in the zero-budget trenches rather than some opportunistic YouTube jackass.

Aims mostly for vibes (as the Kidz say) and doesn't quite get there, though it does have some amusing left-field moments. I want the bloody skeleton puppet to be my friend.

This one starts with Shawn Phillips going full Coolduder, prancing around his house and crowing about "snackies." Pretty sure I fully shut down at that point and let the rest of the film, barely-there as it is (no seriously, it's all the footage from a pre-existing FMV video game strung together and given the framing device of Phillips "watching" it) wash over my out-of-focus eyes. If it's less painful than Amityville Hex, it's only because it's 40 minutes shorter.

Nicolas Cage gives a terrific, completely free performance in a film that takes 90 goddamn over-determined minutes to get to what Fight Club was able to do in less than 120 seconds. Obnoxiously one-note.

"You just saw an old man twerk. And you liked it!"

The last time I encountered Shawn "Coolduder" Phillips in the course of this project was the YouTuber crapfest Amityville Hex, as patience-trying as any movie I've ever seen. So imagine my surprise when I kinda liked parts of this one. Granted, the early part of the film, where the lead spends an agonizing amount of time proving her Karen bonafides, is rough going, and Phillips blows the ending by going back to the 'Tuber-montage arrangement that made Hex so unendurable. But there's a good chunk of the film in the middle, maybe 45 minutes to an hour, where the hook is more or less forgotten and this becomes a goofy hangout movie where Phillips is saying, hey check out all these art-punk weirdos I know. I mean, Actual Actor James Duval is here, and you can't tell me notoriously omnivorous disc collector Phillips wasn't at least aware of the associations Duval invokes. At any rate, I'm also the odd duck who thinks Amityville: Vanishing Point is one of the more interesting of the bootleg sequels, so feel free to ignore me. But this almost successfully Does A Thing!

I dunno about you, but if I were adapting a novel by famously flavorful crime writer Charles Willeford, I probably wouldn't rewrite and reconfigure the material until all the Willeford had been worked out of it. But what do I know, I'm just a critic.

Debicki's radiant performance keeps this thing afloat almost despite itself.

"Those scars show you're a real man."

Sweetly anarchic - a grounded light-touch look at the highs and lows of growing up broke and struggling that still makes room for puckish Miike touches like the main kid's asshole dad being punished for being rude by having a broomstick stuck up his ass or said asshole dad later giving a surprisingly whimsical gift to his side-piece stripper girlfriend. A film of freedom and play and schoolyard violence, wistful and joyous with darkness at its edges. The grandfather standing in a circle of fireworks howling "APOLLO!" at the moon (this is set in 1969) is as good as cinema gets. One of Miike's very best, easily.

Not even set in the right state to be using the name of the town of Amityville, this is mostly a zero-budget West Coast Maniac Cop with a lead doing a weak Axel Foley impression. This Gregory Hatanaka guy has no juice, I'm forced to conclude.

There's enough chains and scantily-clad ladies for me to believe the director has seen at least one Jean Rollin film, and while his unexpectedly grimy anthology doesn't quite get into that territory, it's within hollering distance. Most of it is pretty dull (dialogue, as ever, costs way less than gore makeup), but its modest payoffs are not so bad, as these things go.

Belief in conspiracy is a way to exert control over an uncontrollable situation. So there's ultimately something very tender and mournful about this film's multiple nodes of conspiracy, where potential truths get reframed and refracted so many times and through so many individuals that they come out the other side as unknowable unto apathy. Dissemble all you want, abstract the possible into paranoia and surround the potential with a hundred mirrors reflecting a hundred paths, but the fundamental and terrifyingly knowable truth remains: The dead are dead, the living must keep going without them, and nobody can explain why or how that's fair.

Amityville by way of Event Horizon, done with enough energy and panache to get over. The opening sequence has to be amongst the best things Mark Polonia has done in his 21st-century career, and if the rest of the film can't quite live up to it, it's still got some fun stuff - a couple of decent gore gags, some amusing hallucinations, enjoyably cheap tinfoil set dressing, a robot with a mirrored faceplate in which the skeleton crew doing the filming can be seen at all times.

Pretty standard documentary. Notably fuzzy on its timeline, and the band it's profiling maybe has too many for any of them to stand out as individuals (though part of me wonders if that's the point - old Cold-War stereotypes about collectivism leaking through and all). Finds its most stirring material when the kids get introduced to the meat grinder that is the American record industry.

Given Cokeliss's mostly-television resume, I guess it was unavoidable that this mostly feels like a rejected TV pilot? Some decent action when it cares to rouse itself; if you're going to have the kind of nothing role that Lauren Hutton has here, at least you're only wasting Lauren Hutton in it.

An appropriately grim(m) body-horror take on Cinderella, bolstered by a game lead performance. A surprising amount of the back half can't help but feel pro forma, but at least it saves a showstopper of a setpiece for its finale. Given how it ends, I wish more time had been spent emphasizing the relationship between the two stepsisters.

Also: an unexpected number of erect penises!

Was not expecting that this would make an excellent double-bill with Body Double - a gnarly, sweaty and downbeat crime drama that seems to air out a lot of the psychological dirty laundry inherent in Burt's screen persona.

The bit where Bernie Casey pumps an informant for info is a terrific cinematic example of code-switching.

Very charming, heavier on the dramatics than I was expecting. The Certain Women cameo was a highlight. Hopefully the Joan Chen revival continues unabated.

Making the head vampire Irish was a very sharp touch re: this film's take on American race relations and the back-and-forth between various underclasses.

Also: it's appropriate for a film so concerned with music and performance that this has a post-credit scene that feels like a literal encore.

It's a known quantity that Burt Reynolds would often coast through lesser vehicles, relying on his charm to get through paycheck gigs like Cannonball Run II on autopilot.

Whatever you can say about The Maddening, Burt is not on autopilot. He's giving a full-throated, creepy, sweaty performance, which tells me he believed in this fucked-up script. I couldn't begin to tell you why, but his commitment does lend a level of fascination that wouldn't exist with less against-the-grain casting. A weirdly compelling piece of shit.

Seems specifically tailored to defeat Landon's strengths as a filmmaker - the pressure-cooker scenario limits the number of goofy, likeable character beats he can emphasize, and the repeated use of domestic violence as a narrative hinge cuts off his typical fizzy frivolity at the knees. The last scene has all the charm that's missing from the rest of this precisely because there's no longer anything at stake.

Because of the hours I work and my particular genre interests, I often see films in near-empty theaters. Very occasionally, I'll get a screening all to myself. There's something very satisfying about sitting alone in a big-ass auditorium, I'll it.
