Hurry Up Tomorrow

This starts off with a confident blend of stylization and atmosphere, and I found myself highly impressed by its opening 30 minutes.  The Weeknd was convincing despite the criticisms I’ve read about his acting, but it’s Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan who do the heavy lifting.  Unfortunately, once events lead towards darker, disturbing thematic territory, the film fails to find focus and meanders needlessly.  It’s still very ambitious, and exhibits an effective understanding of musical accompaniment in film.  If it had just spent a little more time developing its storyline, it really could’ve been something more memorable overall.

Creative origin story for the famous exploitation franchise features some clever kills and an absolutely mind-blowing opening sequence.  The rest of the film is good but never quite attains the excellence of that first scene.  Tony Todd’s ing make his appearance all the more poignant, and the cast is well constructed across the board.  The story never quite captured my attention completely though, as it traded in its usual ultra-stylized approach for a more measured, conventional narrative tone.  I did enjoy myself and there are definitely some memorable moments, but I won’t be in a rush to revisit.

Second time around, I still had a blast, the opening 45 minutes to an hour are pure dynamite for the senses.  It’s hard not to be in awe of Spielberg’s craftsmanship, especially during that first race scene.  It’s so phenomenally filmed and edited, it makes you wonder what our future will hold in the entertainment department.
It was fun re-watching, knowing what was coming, because it freed up the viewer to find the Easter Eggs we’d…

Epic spectacle on the grandest scale imaginable.  Effortlessly interweaves from location to location, and from hero to hero, slowing down a bit here and there with overlong expositional scenes, but filled with eye-popping art direction (there were 15 art directors who worked on this film) and staggering special effects.
This was the most effective of the three Avengers movies at incorporating humor into the narrative, never seeming superfluous, but more naturally occurring in the moment due…
